UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

I agree. I missed the UMass visit to the Whitt, but after watching the game TV this afternoon, I think that UMass-Flagship is for real. I would not be at all surprised to see the Minutemen make the FF. I think the our Cats played well this weekend, despite only the 1 point.
Agree!

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

I'm sure it will be much talked about! Already more so than Wyse's ejection...

He tried to hit him in the shoulders - which happens all the time - and the guy hunched over expecting the puck. Bad penalty. Tough break. Long D zone shift after two turned over clearing attempts by MacKinnon...

---

Expectations for Gildon are one thing - but post BU conversation (or CC last year) didn't reference expectations as much as they did lazy, unfocused, should play F, etc (certainly not from all)...

And as Neverret (who I definitely thought was 70+ after hearing his voice on Sox broadcasts) said midway through the third, "Does Gildon ever come off the ice??"

Personally Dan I think Max is obviously overworked and is such a vital part of that team. I saw him throw a couple of shoves (who doesn't out there) and I got the impression he was getting somewhat frustrated. Both announcers felt the wasn't provoked so if he missed the legal check, who knows. And if you want my honest opinion I was more perturbed at the Vela penalty... They (officials) can only call what they see not the intent. Anyway, he's no different that the flack that TyK, JvR, "fill in your own blank" of some of the great players UNH has had as far as board / fan criticism goes. He's a great competitor with tremendous upside and we need him desperately and that's all there is to it.

The bigger stars have to take more of the brunt just 'cause...they are that good. But they are human too and I'm sure Max didn't intend to put his team at a big disadvantage. I was proud of the PK team for killing that one off. Am looking forward to the Miami series! It will be nice to have the team home throughout the weekend. Hope everyone here has a great Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. Let's go 'Cats!!

Ps I really liked Fregona's game today. Lots of hustle...getting to the net. More of that please!

Now that we all agree that UMass-Flagship is for real, who said "There are no moral victories in sport"? Extra credit for multiple answers.

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

Went to the game and thought UNH played fairly well for two periods but were outshot 20-5 to end the game. Had trouble with puck possession in the offensive end as well as getting it out of their own end, so generally nothing new. A good team like UMass really shows up their weaknesses. Tough to see where the Wildcats are going to get their scoring from.

Good effort by the Cats I thought. On to Miami!

Maybe they could make an good effort to stay out of the Penalty Box? Coach mentions this, that, and whatever but seems to ignore the glaring problem of dumb penalties.

Good point JAB. That certainly hurt them y'day!

Gildon was certainly provoked. While I saw it in Amherst, I watched it when I got home (yeah very sick) and he was cross checked in the back and knocked down and then pulled a stupid headshot retaliation that was either a missed shoulder shot or a really uncalled for headshot.
Was was irritating was that Jaffe and co. didn't see, asked for help from the truck and they didn't see it. It was plain as day. Certainly not condoning it but the full story was not relayed.

35 minutes of pretty good hockey, 25 of being a bit on our heels, but as noted we do need to score if we are going to win.

Hey I re-watch games all the time...Anyway...you could see he was visibly upset at certain periods of that game. So I'm not surprised if he just let them have it. Regardless, too bad the commentators made him look like this big bad whatever. No doubt he was targeted as all good players are. Wanna see some take downs of a darn good player?

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

Neverett and Jaffe said Max's name yesterday more than any other players' name, including when Jaffe said that UMass, having seen Gildon earlier in the season, would be make adjustments and focus on him. Gildon will have to learn that other teams are going to try to frustrate him and how to deal with it. The increased attention will likely be a part of his decision to leave or return to UNH next season. Hopefully our other defense men will take some of the burden off Max.

I had forgotten just how bad it got for Pots, especially after he and TK opened the year leading the nation in points. Can remember now just how brutal it was.

Maybe only morale victories!? UMass is technically so good in system and structures.
Had the opportunity to watch Carvel up close and must say I am very impressed. He (and his assistants) talk to the team after nearly every shift. sometimes giving specific feedback and sometimes explaining how a play went and why, the good and bad. No yelling and plenty of positives. At TV timeouts he would draw up something to demonstrate what he wanted next. The whole team sits there giving him 100% attention. Heads bobbing to show they are listening. Folks it is working!

Re: UNH 2018-19: Souza The Opportunity

I did not see the game on Sunday afternoon, but reading the recap of the game bad penalties were an issue again. I am sure the coaches will be working on special teams a lot this week during practices. The team has given up a lot of short-handed goals over the last three games.

The whole team needs to show better discipline and stay out of the penalty box. Gildon, maybe more than any other player needs to not get frustrated, stay focused and not take bad penalties. Hopefully, Max and the team will learn from his penalty and one game suspension. The players have already played at least 14 and maybe some closer to 18 years of organized hockey. Over those years each player probably were the best or one of the best players on a few of their teams. Being one of the best they received special attention from the opposing teams. All hockey players strive to play at the next level. When they are able to play at that next level they then strive to be one of the best at that level before moving on to the next level. Gildon needs to anticipate, plan for and embrace the extra attention from opposing teams and players as he continues to develop and improve as a hockey player. This extra attention will encompass being closely checked, being check extra hard, being slashed, being punched behind the play and being trashed talked. All great athletes have experienced this and gained motivation to perform even better.
