If true VERY surprising ... thought Coach Holt was doing a great job and had that program going in the right direction. Wonder if he might be heading elsewhere ... waiting for other shoe to drop.

It is true the UNE coaching position is currently vacant and Coach Holt is not in the running for the Middlebury job.

Re: UNE Head Coach

Looks like he was doing a pretty solid job so I wonder what happened exactly. His choice to leave or theirs?

Interesting stuff continues at UNE ... while there is still no official announcement of a change they continue to advertise their men's hockey head coaching job on their website. Now they have hired a new Athletic Director ... Jack McDonald leaves D-1 Quinnipiac after 20 years ... he previously was AD at Denver ... to run the show in Biddeford! What is going on in the Land of the Noreasters?

From the Torrington, CT Register-Citizen

By Chip Malafronte

HAMDEN -- Last fall, Jack McDonald announced he would retire after 20 years as athletic director at Quinnipiac. Although he and his wife, Linda, planned a permanent move to their vacation cottage on the South Shore of Massachusetts, he confided to close friends and colleagues that he wasn’t quite ready to stop working altogether.

As his final day of June 30 approached, advice filtered in that had a familiar refrain.

“Jack, whatever you do, stay busy,” they advised. “You’ve got to stay busy and other opportunities will come.”

Retirement, it turned out, will wait. On Monday, McDonald accepted the job of associate vice president and director of athletics at the University of New England, a picturesque private school in Biddleford, Maine, with a small athletic program.

“This was unscripted,” McDonald said. “It just sort of happened.”

At the annual NCAA convention in January, administrators from New England encountered McDonald to talk about women’s rugby. The school is planning to add it as a varsity sport in the fall; Quinnipiac is one of a handful of programs already competing in it at the varsity level.

New England, it turned out, was also in need of an athletic director. Kim Allen, who’d held the position for nine years, had resigned days earlier following an arrest for driving under the influence.

There was mutual interest, which led to an interview. McDonald fell in love with the campus, which has views of the Atlantic Ocean and Saco River from nearly every window of every building. The athletic program, classified as Division III, has 15 sports including a thriving hockey program in need of a new coach. It’s also planning to add varsity football by 2017.

And, much like Quinnipiac, there is a new dual-sport facility for hockey and basketball. McDonald decided it was a perfect fit.

Over a 20-year career at Quinnipiac, McDonald famously turned an unknown hockey program into one of the best in the country. He’s also stayed active on countless national committees and last year was named NCAA Division IAAA athletic director of the year.

“I was the luckiest athletic director on the planet to have been at Quinnipiac,” McDonald said. “There were some ups and downs, but at the end of the day, I couldn’t have been happier about my time there and the support over the years of (Quinnipiac president) John Lahey and (executive vice president) Mark Thompson.”

Quinnipiac has yet to name McDonald’s successor. A national search which began last fall is nearing completion. Lahey is expected make an announcement in the coming weeks. No candidates have been made public, but the new athletic director will inherit a flourishing Division I program envisioned and constructed by McDonald; one barely recognizable from the tiny department he transformed some two decades ago.

So retirement has been replaced by downsizing; from major college athletics to the relative quiet of coastal Maine. Just don’t expect him to simply kick back in his new digs with a cold lemonade.

To know McDonald is to understand work ethic and ambition never rests.

After all, you’ve got to stay busy.

Anyone heard anything new about this? It has been a month since they posted Holt's job, but still no announcement about his status ...

It's the same with regard to the Tufts coach (Brian Murphy) -- Tufts is accepting applications for a new head coach but has said nothing about Murphy's departure.

If this is true, great hire for UNE.

ECAC East looking VERY strong in future.

Re: UNE Head Coach

Well. He has added Colby back into the schedule with one game in January 2016. Haven't played Colby since 2013----but it had been the Mules choice to abandon the series. It makes a lot of sense, local travel, strong conference. UNE will also continue to play Bowdoin with a home-and-home pair.
