UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

Re: UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

UMD 3 - UM 2 in 3 on 3 OT.

Elmes scores the winner on an innocent looking deflection about 10 feet out off a soft (not sure if that was a pass or a shot) from inside the blue line.

Anti-climactic winner.

But fitting for the effort level that was put in by both teams. UMD's effort was very good tonight. Can't say the same for UM.

Re: UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

UM 1 - UMD 0 after 1.

The 'Dogs strategy of employing the cheesecloth defense and a faux pas by Rooney on a shot that went in, after sitting/landing on her equipment in front of her, in a head shaking kind of way has UM ahead by one.

It took UMD almost 12 minutes to get its first SOG!

UM came out of the blocks looking like they were on a mission and the 'Dogs were headed in the opposite direction. UM with the big advantage in play for the first 15 minutes or so which is the exact opposite of what happened yesterday.

UMD with some extremely bad defensive moves/decisions/displays/execution. Hopefully it improves from here. Difficult not to.

Re: UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

UM 4 - UMD 2 after 2.

Rooney with another error on what should have been a low level routine save/trap allowed the puck to slip under her glove to the open side of the net where a Gopher took full advantage of the blunder. And this after UMD had tied up the game at 2 which had charged up their energy level.

Then two giveaways by the 'Dogs and Zumwinkel on the second one on a 2 on 1 that became a breakaway went laser beam 2 hole on Rooney like it had eyes.

Several strange/shouldn't have been kind of goals in this series...Zumwinkel's wasn't one of them.

UMD has been their own worst enemy giving back the 2 goal lead that they had just erased. Good on UM for taking full advantage of inferior play by their opponent.

Rooney did make a nice save on a breakaway in an attempt to redeem herself.

UM 4 - UMD 3 final.

Turned into an exciting game in the 3rd with UMD scoring in the last minute with Rooney pulled for the extra attacker. Bell with the marker into the far and open side of the net on a pass from the corner.

This game, after their hapless first period, was very winnable for the 'Dogs. Just too many amateurish mistakes for this level of hockey combined with their inability to finish on multiple opportunities that they had created for themselves especially during at least 3 power plays in the 3rd period. Sad to waste such an excellent opportunity to gain some capital where it counts and against the presently top ranked team in the country.

Not ready for prime time...but looking like they could be close.

Re: UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

UMD 2 - UW 2 after one.

The game started with the 'Dogs still in the dressing room. Crowell has to fix this problem with lack of focus.

UMD was content to expend minimal effort watching UW play catch in the UMD end for the first minute and a half of the game and you know how that's going to end up...and it did with Rogue bagging one on the doorstep.

Then the puck gets dropped at center ice and it's a different UMD team who proceed to repay the compliment to UW ending in a goal about a minute later.

Shortly afterwards 3 'Dogs find themselves in close. Brodt drew Campbell to her left and then once she was committed Brodt wired a pass cross crease (but out a few feet) to a solitary Klein who one timed a cannon into the open net. Gorgeous goal.

A minute or so later UMD gets really sloppy in their end and Watts ties it up for UW.

All this in the first 6-7 minutes.

UMD came close to repeating the gorgeous goal later in the period and had a very anemic power play with only one shot on goal that I can remember.

Some hopelessly poor effort by UMD at times...embarrassingly so. And then flashes of brilliance.

If Crowell could ever get this team to focus for 60 minutes UMD could be scary good and give every opponent all they can handle.

Re: UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

Scoreless 2nd period.

A couple of tense moments with a puck rolling thru the UMD crease on its way in but the elbow of an extended UMD stick along the ice redirected the puck out the side of the crease.

At the other end Klein found herself all alone a few strides inside the UW blue line and unleashed 3 shots on the undeterred Campbell.

UMD killed off a Badger power play.

This is anybody's game.

Re: UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

'Dogs 3 - Digger 4 final.

Exciting but disappointing ending.

Diggers pulled ahead 3-2 late in the 3rd with one from Rogue in close, that Rooney absolutely should have had since there was almost nowhere for the puck to go, and it was looking like it was slipping away from UMD.

Then, immediately after a UMD time out, with 2:38 left Klein in close from Brodt lifted it over Campbell's shoulder 3 hole to tie it up. Nice goal.

Then with 1:15 left Mauerman with a beautiful wrist shot from the high inside edge of the face off circle bags the winner. Despite how nice that shot was it was from sufficiently far enough out that Rooney should have had it.

Good quick game after the 'Dogs woke up after the first couple minutes of the game...lots of flow...not many whistles.

The story of this game for the 'Dogs was Rooney's less than stellar play. She looked shaky at times and slow early like her head just wasn't in the game. That seemed to improve deeper into the first and the second. But at least 2 of the goals that she allowed were head shakers. UMD had an excellent chance to win this game and of all players to have less than her normal/usual game it was the one that mattered most. Normal/usual would have done it.

I'm planning on watching the replay of the game stream so it will be interesting to see your observations on Rooney. She had her struggles against Minnesota.

Re: UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

'Dogs 1 - Diggers 0 after 1.

Hughes with the first goal under Campbell's left pad after she got Campbell to commit.

This might even be a faster game than last night.

'Dogs generally quicker but some sticks just aren't fast enough in front to capitalize on opportunities.

Rooney, not that she has been tested much, looks a lot sharper and quicker than last night...looks normal.

UMD hopelessly hemmed in their own end twice each for an interminably long period of time part of which was caused by poor decisions at the blue line when they had the puck and could easily have gotten it into the neutral zone.

Two or three players with questionable levels of effort. Bell doesn't look right...very slow and unmotivated.

Which causes me to ask, are flu shots compulsory on NCAA teams? Is that something that they can even legally dictate to student/athletes?

Re: UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

'Dogs 2 - Diggers 3 after 2.

A 4 goal period with UMD coming out on the short end.

Kind of missed UW's first goal...I think it was a laser wrist shot from the slot by Shirley.

Nice goal by Hughes from Brodt. These two can move the puck lightning fast and effectively when they create enough space for themselves.

UMD paid for a borderline call that resulted in a UW power play.

Seems to me that the story of this game so far is UMD's inability to control the puck well enough in their own end and what seems to be their collective lack of willingness to expend enough effort to change that dynamic.

Re: UMD 2019-20 Season Thread

'Dogs 2 - Diggers 5 final.

Diggers with 2 empty netters in the last minute of play just before which Houston stuffed a pass just inside the UW blue line and turned it into a breakaway. She had Campbell beat for the tying goal with barely 2 minutes left in regulation time but hit the post.

Just not enough stretches of puck possession time in the UW end...actually, no stretches in this game. Tough to win that way but they came close again. Turning into the close but no cigar 'Dogs. (But I can take solace in T3's comment in the scores thread re: the BU victories over BU. Haha).

Rogge was conspicuous by her absence this weekend...wonder what the story is?

Rogge tore ligaments in her knee over the summer and is out for the season
