UMASS-NEWMASS 2025-2026

2 out of 3 versus UML, good but not what they needed if they want to get in the playoffs. #19 NPI. 3 games against UNH, 2 vs UCONN and 1 vs BS. UMASS needs to go at least 4-2 or maybe 5-1 to have any chance.

Playing around with the customizer I find no combination of 4-2 results that get them in. Even the best 5-1 I could come up with leaves them at 15. That’s not going to do it. And they are not going 5-1 against the upcoming opponents in any case.

Of course this doesn’t include conference tournaments or what some of the other competitors trying to sneak in do.

Didn't play, went from 19 to 21 on NPI. While recruiting looks good for next year, I am still holding out a faint hope of making the tournament for this year. Perhaps Hrabel can start practicing standing on his head....UMASS needs him to show up big.

OK, good night last night. Didn't play but we nt from 21 to 19 in the NPI. Not playing again tonight...hope to get up to 17! ;)

Must sweep weekend vs UNH. It has happened in the past vs the Wildcats, but not very often. If it somehow happens, they have do it all over again next week vs UConn. And then the following week beat BC. The probability matrix over at CHN has the odds of an at-large at 6%. So, it doesn't feel particularly stressful this weekend, the Minutemen sealed their fate months ago. It's all about pride and getting to 20 wins, which seems very attainable.

One wonders if Van Tassel, Cosman, and especially Nestrasil will return for this series. It would improve their odds.

What good are a bunch of 6'5" hockey players who cannot put the puck in the net? Losing 1-0 to UNH should be an embarrassment to these player. Hrabel cannot pitch a shutout every night! Now they must win their last five games to have any shot at the NCAAs. Carvey needs to recruit some goal scorers.

They were missing Musa, which didn’t help. If they get to 20 wins and stay in the top 20 NPI then considering where they started the New Year this season is a moderate success.

If they can keep the band together then next year looks promising. Olvestad is the only player they lose to graduation that will be missed. Murray is extra player caliber and O’Connor has dressed for 3 games. Did he zzz ever step on the ice?

Hrabel is likely gone but I think they’ll be okay in goal between Irving and the incoming recruits.

Musa? Hope he stays but it’s better than 50-50 he moves on and up.

The killer, if it happens, is if Larry Keenan leaves too. Pray that he stays.

It’s been nice that they’ve won a bunch the past two months but they really haven’t looked that great for much of the run.

A sweep of UConn would be sweet, but unlikely. Either way their probability of an at-large is down to 2%. Stick a fork in their NCAA tournament dreams.

There is always winning the HE tournament!

Yup. If they can remain in the top five then they have to win three games. Doable as long as someone else removes BC from the picture. As good as Providence is playing, they struggle against Carvel coached teams.

The probability matrix gives them a 12% chance of winning HEA to sneak in.

Five out of six points vs UConn is better than I expected. However they've dropped to 20 in the NPI. Playing around with the CHN optimizer I find that if that had beaten Army, they'd be at 15 and with a fighters chance at a bid. And if you add a sweep of Omaha instead of a split, they'd be all the way up to 12. Maybe a big ask to sweep an NCHC team at their own place, but no excuse for losing to Army. The NCAA dream is already over.

They need to take 3 of 6 possible points next week and they'll get a bye and then a home game in the HEA tourney. It would be sweet to push BC ever closer the cliff and out of the NCAA's themselves. But, I can't see that happening. They could also drop all the way to 6th if they lose both and Maine and BU win. That would leave them in 6th, I guess still hosting, but also short of 20 wins.

Awesome crowd last night. It's a totally different experience than the mid-season intercession morgue that is Mullins. Those remind me too much of the basketball games, which I stopped attending over a decade ago. (Thanks Derek Kellogg for putting me out of my misery. And you were the high point of the past decade. Yikes. This current guy - THE highest paid employee of the Commonwealth, is incompetent, a total prick, and has 3 more years at 1.5 large.)

so what was your take with the lights going out with a uconn 2 on 1 possibly getting a win..i think it was BULLSHIT

It was unfortunate, to say the least. An explanation is called for and someone’s head should roll. Don’t hold your breath waiting for either though. You should be ticked off, I would be.

But that said, it wasn’t a clean 2 on 1. More like a 2 on 2 if the play finished cleanly. The UConn player on the left side was about to be caught and Dell’Elce had the right winger covered and already steered away from the net a bit. Hrabal stopped 50 shots and 7 in the shootout so it’s not like it was a sure goal was stolen . Still, vent away, it wasn’t right.

Late edit. Probably should have been a delay of game penalty assessed to UMass. I can’t think of any other way to rectify that.

Something good came out of the light fiasco. Doesn’t help UConn though.

I've always hated the strobe effect after goals and home runs. I'm glad the HE did something about it. If it had gone the other way against UMASS, I would have been pissed as well.

I think this is a good article with some food for thought. I thought a win at UCONN and a OT win in Amherst would have really helped UMASS' NPI since UCONN was rated much higher. Instead nothing really changed. It seems like wins don't move a team so much but a loss is devastating.

No one enjoys that crap. While I'm in an old man "get off my lawn" mode, this doesn't go far enough. I've always hated the incessant, piped-in music that gets played the millisecond after a stoppage that continues until a millisecond after the next face-off. Every effing arena does it, it's worse in the pros. It's like, the game isn't excited enough on its own? If you have a live band, great, wail away. All piped in music should be banned everywhere. Get off my Lawn!
