UMass-Lowell at Minnesota State 10/14 and 10/15: Is anybody out there?!

Re: UMass-Lowell at Minnesota State 10/14 and 10/15: Is anybody out there?!

[facepalm] Will this "joke" never die? It stopped being "fresh" at least ten years ago.

Would you prefer something about Purple Cows? Besides last year, Lowell hasn't seen Mankato since the early '80s! To us, any joke is fresh!

Everybody knows that Hayden Fox left Minnesota State in the 1995 season to coach the Orlando Breakers, and he took his whole staff with him.

Goaltending ... there are two sophomores coming back this year, and a freshman. The two sophs both had pretty average-to-bad numbers last year, some their fault and some the fault of a questionable defense. Towards the end of the season you could start seeing Doug Carr establishing himself a bit more than had Marc Boulanger, but the assumption at this point (by me) is that they'll probably rotate until one steps up.
I'm expecting Carr to get first start, and 50/50 on the second start (Boulanger otherwise). I'm basing that mostly on Carr sitting out the exh game and Boulanger only getting 1 period, and the bit of the edge that Carr had last year.

Will there be an internet broadcast of either game?

Re: UMass-Lowell at Minnesota State 10/14 and 10/15: Is anybody out there?!

B2 usually does their internet webcast of the game, I'll try and dig into it more for you tomorrow and try and come up with a link. One more day til hockey!!
Yep, there they are. Mankato link: http://www.b2livetv.com/partner_members.asp?id=177 UML Link: http://www.b2livetv.com/partner_members.asp?id=182

When I checked out B2 for UML a few weeks back, it seemed like they had a only a single game for us. Thanks!

Nice work.

One day from hockey, and in rather unsurprising news, captain Tyler Elbrecht will be out until December with a broken elbow.

That's at least until December. I'll be very suprised if he's back that quickly, given that he's having plates and screws put in. We're not talking about a simple fracture.

the great thing about the central time zone is that I'll be able to get home for the start of the game on friday :)

Best part of the Central Time Zone...Saturday Night Live ends on Saturday Night :p

Have the alarm set at 3:00 AM. Going to be a long day tomorrow, at least the weather should be OK in Chicago and Minneapolis for the flights.

Hockey season has arrived!

I dunno, if I'm watching SNL on a Saturday night I'm not sure I can call that a good night :)

The walking and the drive down from MSP will be beautiful with all of the fall colors and leaves changing, etc. Perfect weekend for you to visit.

You will be just fine buying tickets when you get here, no worries. We won't sell out this weekend, that's for sure. A pretty good crowd will be 3500-3800 this weekend..:o Our local football team is a State Powerhouse every year, but they're playing on the road this weekend, so that will get a few more people in the seats. I think the students should be out in full force, there seems to be a bit of buzz around the hockey team this weekend. Should be a good weekend for some hockey!

A lot of people gather at Rounders, Blue Bricks, and Buffalo Wild Wings prior to the game, find a spot you're comfortable with after, downtown area has plenty of good bars within walking distance.

Colors are great right now at Minneopa. Only potential buzzkill is that the waterfalls are almost completely dry. We were there about 2 weeks ago and I walked across the 25 foot wide stream without getting the slightest bit damp. It hasn't rained much since then so I'm assuming it's the same thing now. If you bore of Minneopa, you can also try the Sekatah Trail for some good hiking as well.

As for bars, all the ones mentioned are pretty good. For cheap beer you can go to The Underground after the game for 2-for-1s (and beers I think are $2 normally) if you don't mind a complete college crowd. Pagliai's is on the same street and has some pretty good local pizza as well. Pub 500 and Red Sky are probably pretty good suggestions for more "grown up" crowds.

Mavs/Riverhawks. Bring it on! lol Kidding around with that post.

I will spend the $8 and watch the game tonight. I have no expectations for Lowell this season so a loss* won't bother me.

*Unless the D plays like they did last season.

I don't suppose this feed is working for anybody else

If you were to tell me that Lowell would have a three-goal lead with Brian Robbins in net late in the third period, I probably would have told you that you were watching "Lost Lives in Lowell", that 1990's documentary on some illicit substance.

Once Mankato scored their first goal off of a tasty treat that was put back into the net that was as wide open as some of the farms out here, I did not have much hope for the game and preparing for another arduous season of Lowell hockey. It wasn't as if Lowell was playing badly; actually quite the opposite, Lowell was exposing a horrid breakout scheme from the Mavericks from their own zone. Riley Wetmore well, was Riley Wetmore, scored two goals in response, and the River Hawks never looked back enroute to victory. The turning point of the game for me was Lowell's third goal. Without Buco, the goal never happens as he put on a gifted stick-handling display in the offensive zone for a good five to ten seconds, allowing for Wallin and Ferriera to get in on a line change and place a rocket upstairs into the back of the net. The bottom line is that this Lowell team has something that was lacking all of last year...trust in one another. It was obvious that there is much more accountability as a whole, from the upperclassmen to the young freshmen.

Make no mistake, this was a complete 180 degree turn from either of the two Mankato games last season. Passes were completed, few penalties were committed, defensive assignments were by and large were covered. They controlled a enoromous chunk of the game. Sure, there were mistakes and there is plenty of work to be done. Yes, the Mavericks are not an elite WCHA team like a Duluth or Minnesota, but nonetheless, this was a very important win and boost for the River Hawks who now have half as many wins this season as did through all of first semester and a part of second semester last year.

It will be interestng to see who starts in net tonight for both teams.
