UMass Amherst @ Boston University 1/2/10

Happy New Year!!! It's been 3 weeks since we've seen the Terriers. Has time healed all wounds? That last game was as dismal a moment as I've seen as a Terrier fan. Hopefully the break has given everyone a time to step back and re-energize themselves.

The Minutemen are coming off an upset loss to Bentley. Will they be firing on all cylinders to prove that was a fluke???

And don't forget - the game is at 4pm tomorrow!!

USCHO is good at messing up start times.

I'll be at the game (in neutral attire, of course :p). How Conte-like is Agganis going to be? A game over break with no students... though I hear the pep band will still be there.

Was that post to call out my typo with the word "fan" or did you hit submit too quickly?

Scarlet, I wish things were looking different but from what I'm hearing, the coaches talk change but it will be the same approach as you witnessed December 13th. Let's see if the players take it upon themselves to make it a different second half.

Scarlet, its operator error on my part. I still can't do the quote stuff right. Sorry about that....I didn't notice your typo if it was there.

After watching the Winter Classic I can't wait to be at Fenway next Friday. Hopefully we get there with some momentum.

Happy New Year!

No worries, I was just curious. :) And not for nothing, that question was supposed to rhetorical, and not one to be answered. :) Because really, you've just killed my New Year's buzz. :(

Any word on lines yet?

Thought the weather might keep me away and on your blog and the tv broadcast but I'm going to be in the stands cheering for a strong Terrier start to their second half of the season!

They're up on the blog now. You're probably already on your way in, though.

Re: UMass Amherst @ Boston University 1/2/10

Great way to start off the New Year for BU. Not a great game, but good, solid play. Still need to work on faceoffs, though I saw some improvement in the third period. Some ridicuous penalties. It was either Gaudet or Rosen that got called for what I'm guessing is looking cross eyed at a UMass player. Because he didn't seem to touch him.

Klassay UMass fan that somehow got tickets in front of me taking his tub of popcorn and shaking out all the contents on the seats and floor when BU scored the 7th goal. Idiot.

Here's hoping this is a good start to a new decade.

Typical Jack Parker complaining about the refs in a 4-goal blowout win.

i'm not sure you understand the definition of sour grapes, but he's right. complaining about officiating in a game in which the team you support scored seven times is unbecoming.

I'm well aware of the meaning of sour grapes. His team just got smoked by BU, who has sucked big time this year, and that's all he can come up with? Weak, just weak.

And shouldn't you be laughing along with me? I thought you lived for the flagship's embarrassment.

In fairness, the officiating was the worst I've seen this season.

And Parker seemed more upset with Hockey East in general than that crew in particular. He said that there's no consistency in Hockey East (something I think we can all agree with) because there's no set definition of what a penalty is. Some refs, like last night's, call games very tight, much like NHL refs. Others let a lot go, much like NHL refs pre-lockout. Parker said he'd like to see Hockey East go to the NHL standard, but that right now, only some HE officials use that standard, which is obviously not good.

oh believe me, i watched a good portion of the game with considerable glee, and yes, the officiating was rather bad.

well yes, and the larger point is that if even i'm saying it's unseemly to go around acting like this about a game involving a mortifying loss by umass amherst, then it must be quite unseemly indeed.

but by all means, bu fans continue to mock amherst for this and the bentley loss. i know i will.

Re: UMass Amherst @ Boston University 1/2/10

Scarlet, I'm not sure what else I really have to work with here. Just an embarrassing few days of ******-poor hockey by the Minutemen.

Regarding the officials, I don't mind the refs calling the game so tightly, but it the inconsistency that gets me. If your team has to spend the first period figuring out what kind of game they can play, that seems like it might be a tad frustrating.

There were some positive things they called the other night that they don't always get. For example, the Wellman penalty for charging was absolutely the correct call, and that call is missed more often than not.

I'll play Devil's Advocate (in an attempt to mask ignorance :p ). In other sports -- most notably baseball -- you hear people say you spend the first part of the game figuring out where this particular ump's strike zone is, and adjust from there. If something close is a ball in the 1st, you don't complain about that same pitch being a ball in the 7th. Is hockey just different? Shouldn't players and coaches have the ability to say, "Looks like they're calling it tight tonight, keep it clean"? Or -- another way of asking -- don't people expect that calls will vary from crew to crew?
