UMass 2013-2014 Season Thread (Changes to Mullins)

Understanding fully that this thread will probably die before the season's over (all the talk used to happens at umasshoops.com), I figured I'd at least let you know that there are changes to the Mullins Center.

The benches are being flipped, as are the nets each team shoots twice at. Also, the student section is going to be moved behind the goal the visiting team defends twice. Pretty much like every other rink in the conference: http://www.umassathletics.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/080913aaa.html

Hopefully it gives the Minutemen a boost so they can fight for home ice rather than last spot in the playoffs.

With the addition of ND, every team makes the playoffs now. However, you bring up an interesting point. How much is this worth over the course of the season, putting yourself at a disadvantage based on penalty box location and home bench? I don't think it would be worth more than a game every couple of years, would it?

Switching the penalty benches to the home side worked out pretty well for Merrimack - we made the switch in 2010-11 and it lead to the question of why it was ever the other way in the first place...

Then again, we did have both team benches on the opposite side of the ice from the penalty benches for a while...
