UMaine Black Bears Recruiting

Re: UMaine Black Bears Recruiting

If I was the islanders I wouldn’t want to sign him. Why waste his cheap years when they’re going to be tanking anyway?

Rebuild, trade some away a player or two in favor of youth and picks, let borderline NHL come in early. If you aren't doing that then what are you doing.

Also, as I understand it if he plays less than 9 games his ELC can slide. Therefore, if he is only an AHLer you haven't wasted his cheap year. This is my interpretation, but I could be mistaken.

The smart move would be playing @ BC for one season....but he has had his eye's set on playing in the NHL since he was just a young boy....I kind of think it will be 50/50...but you can be assured that Lamerillo {sic} will be making the call on that, if he jumps to the NHL or is told that College Hockey for a year is best for him, and then go from there.

:)

Watched nesn tonight where they showcased Samoset, Sugarloaf, and Bell Grade Lake...

I'm just curious. How much time have you actually spent in the area of UMO or south central Maine?

23 years near Orono, 6 near Portland. Played there, nice courses. I'll visit back home about 5 or 6 times per year now(live out of state). I know the spelling wasn't good, oh well... People show up to see me hit a driver not win a spelling bee! :D Just kidding, my driving isn't that spectacular these days. :)

I see Ben Beck is playing for Maryland Blackbears(NAHL) next season. It is a new team in NAHL this season. It will be coached by Clint Mylymok, whom previously coached Tim Gould and Adam Dawe at Notre Dame of SJHL.

Also Josh Langford tendered with Chippewa (NAHL), formerly Coulee Region, about a month ago. We will find out Tuesday if he made the Sioux Falls 30 man roster, which is unlikely given his age.

I made changes to Beck and Langford on the recruit site but didn't have time to post here.

Re: UMaine Black Bears Recruiting

Thanks for the info. Here is a link where Morrissey got MVP, Renwick got most dedicated, and Kevin Gould(younger brother to Tim Gould) got most sportmanlike.

I saw this and it seems QMJHL team Islanders will be making a push for Morrissey...

It will be interesting to know if Morrissey played in Tri-city(USHL) tryout camp. ???

Re: UMaine Black Bears Recruiting

Some highlights of Thiessen playing in Vancouver's prospect camp scrimmage...
https://youtu.be/78MIIwnwoQc

Looks like he gave up 2 goals in regulation where he shared time with another goalie. Then gave up a couple in the shootout. Imagine the skill level he was up against was a couple notches higher than he's used too. Great experience for him.

Morrissey has been the talk of the town since last summer when he and Brett Budgell both chose to play elsewehere. A big hit for a team that was rebuilding and have plenty of open spots. If Morrissey makes it through the new year without jumping that is a very strong indication he will be coming to Orono. Morrissey is still 4 years away (maybe 3) from Orono so if he does jump Red and Co. will have plenty of time to fill his spot.

Speaking of very strong indications, based on recent communications I am very confident that Lynden Breen will be playing for the Black Bears 2020-21 and not jump to his hometown Sea Dogs. Later today it will be announced that he made the Central Illinois 30 man roster with the plan that he plays two seasons in USHL. Rapid development, injuries, and early departures could see him bumped up to 2019 class. This is inline with the roster projection i had for him on the recruit web site. Only change I have made is removing his flight risk. If new information changes in the future I will update accordingly.

Re: UMaine Black Bears Recruiting

Once upon a time, ~2010, the Huskies had a pretty good goalie name Brad Thiessen from BC. He finished his junior year, signed with Pittsburgh and wound up as their backup goalie as they won the Stanley cup. Is this goalie any relation?

From the few bits and pieces I could string together it seemed Morrissey is more likely than not to go for the education. And also, it seems more likely Renwick might be more of the major junior candidate. Nobody took a flier on him in the USHL draft, which given how well he did at Telus.. you have to think scouts knew he was a risky pick. Hopefully I am very wrong with this line of think. The jumbo Notre Dame Hound package of Morrissey/Renwick/Gould/Dawe/Farrell combined with Breen has a great make up of solid talent, a lot of which is eastern Canadian where I wished Maine would get more hockey student athletes from. Had great luck with Pellerin, Purcell, Sweetland, etc.. The only one that didn't pan out was Sill, but I think he must have partied too much?

Yes, he told younger brother to play for a real goaltending university... UMaine. ;)

Kidding aside I doubt there is a close relation, possibly distant. :) But Thiessen of NU was a beast.
