Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

People actually think Maine football will beat UNH? That hasn't happened much, UNH must really be having a really down year.

I sort of expect you guys to win, especially with the game up there. Last Saturday was a real downer, blowing a 22-0 lead to Albany at home. Guess the guys were too stressed out about the election...

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

Have you not seen Fossier or Pearson? They're significantly better than Flynn, Abbott, or Mangene and it's not that close.

I didn't cite Mangene. He was all wheels and no hands, IMO.

But to mention Pearson or Fossier in the same breath as Flynn or Abbott at this point is a "hand me what you're smoking" event, and please have the AED nearby when you do, 'cause that must be some seriously robust bud, my friend...

I would love either of the former to develop into Flynn or Abbott, but I don't see that coming at this point. Time will tell, and while I'm rooting for that sort of improvement, I have seen them in 5 games already, and am not holding my breath.

You give this 2016 team Brian and Spencer instead Fossier and Pearson, and I'd bet Maine would already be above .500. Those guys were special talents, and I don't see a special talent on our current Bears roster.

Thanks for weighing-in. UNH is not quite as good as usual, but is a dangerous team nonetheless. I'd probably handicap the coming game with Maine as a slight (-2.5) favorite at home, but on the field, it's a toss-up.

Maine is a lock to get in with a win, and UNH has a very good shot with the same. It's essentially a playoff game. Should be a war, and a fun watch.

2 on the road at Vermont, close friday, blow out Saturday if it continues to follow the pattern.

I'm not holding my breath, still traumatized by the vack to back losses to them in 2013, but maybe McDonnell won't own young Joe the way he owned Cozzy

You're thinking of Flynn and Abbott later on, not when they were freshmen. Flynn had 12 goals his freshmen year and Abbott seven. In only a third of the season Fossier has six and Pearson has four. They are both much better defensively and Pearson is one of the best at taking face-offs Maine has had in recent times.

They do have good numbers, and I absolutely want them to succeed.

What I guess I meant to say was that Flynn and Abbott could create their own shots, and I haven't seen much of that on recent Maine teams. Saw them both as Fr. and they impressed me immediately as guys who could make something happen out of thin air.

Abbott, especially. I never knew anything about him as a recruit, but when I saw him as a Fr. on especially dismal weekend at UMA, his footwork and hands, and his patience just screamed "scorer". I honestly believe that Byron is the closest thing to that on Maine right now, even if his career numbers aren't all that impressive. That quality seems to be something that can't be taught.

Maine down 4-0 in the second. Completely self destructed in the second. It has probably been Rob's worst game of the season, he hasn't been sharp at all.

Dont know how you go up there and give up 6 goals and expect to be taken seriously. Lose a game is one thing, give up 6 goals......ugh.

Vermont was all over Maine in the second period. Team speed, breakaways, execution with the puck, you name it. Maine had no answer until they scored with less than a minute left in the quarter after Vermont scored 4 unanswered goals. Fossier received a game misconduct and a 5 minute major in the third period. Pearson makes a pass while on the PP and the puck goes the length of the ice and into an empty net. One of those nights for Maine. Tomorrow night should be different (I hope). Mundinger replaced McGovern after the 5th goal.

For me the turning point was when Maine didn't cash in on the 5X3. Its a different game if they score there but not scoring gave UVM all the momentum and they made the most of it. With that being said I thought Rob looked horrible. He didn't come out at all on the first goal and was really slow moving across. None of the goals were soft but you would hope he saves a few of them. Maine needs a good LH dman and someone who can hang out in front of the net on the PP.

So what's the chances of Mundinger getting his first start on Saturday afternoon...50-50 or less? OR do they go with Morris to start and give McGovern the time off..? RG said that when or if Mundinger got his first start it would be on the road, that according to the CIC meeting during the Quinnipiac series in October.

Why would Mundinger start.? Do you think he is that good? If so why does maine have 2 goalies coming in, one next year, one the year after

If you bring in a hundred goalies maybe one of them is a keeper, I dunno. Too painful to watch last night, I checked out after the 4th uvm goal. Just horrible. Creeping closer and closer to doubting that red is the guy. Get a gd powerplay ! Krist, uvm tried to gift wrap that game for us and we refused the offer. :(

Anyone who hasn't had doubts hasn't been paying attention, 3 years of inconsistency. Maine had chances before UVM scored. They play better 5 on 5 then they do on a 5 on 3. Watch the way the puck goes when a Maine player and a opposing player get to the puck at the same time, I'd bet 75% it goes the opposite way Maine wants it to. Their might be more talent on this team then in years past but it isn't showing at times. Oh well maybe they can get it together this afternoon, games at 4. One good thing, UVM has a great webcast for free although I shut it off in favor of watching 2 high school football teams play that I have no connection to at all.

Re: UMaine Black Bears, 2016 2017 season thread

I scratch my head over how they generally seem to play well in the first period then come out flat in the second and let the other team dominate and score goals. Seems this happened most games this year. I wonder if Reds strategy and style is so transparent that the other team adjusts at the period break, and then Red can't adjust mid period. I don't know very frustrating.

I think I'm losing support for Red. Is it too early to call for his resignation? If they can get a win tonight then I'd say the coaches did the right things to adjust. But who's in goal tonight??
