UMaine Black Bears 2013-14 season

Re: UMaine Black Bears 2013-14 season

Well now that the B-Ball Coach is in place(Walsh)...maybe it won't be too long to find out what direction the W-Hky search is going...the longer it takes makes me feel like there won't be much of a change instead of Interim to Full Time Coach(or Coaches..?)...that said will they go as one Coach or Co-Coaches..?

Precedence set. The Husband and Wife Co-Coach routine went pretty well for another school.

In another coincidence, the female of each of these couples actually played D1 at the same school, possibly even at the same time. (Have to look that latter part up to be sure).

P.S..... Confirmed that they played on the same team for three seasons, both played over 130 college games in their careers.

Spring weather has finally arrived up north. (About time). Enjoy it while you can, summer is short enough as it is. :)

The University of Maine athletic department needs to put more effort into their women's hockey program. They have been without a traditional coaching staff since September. If this was a men's program it would have been addressed immediately. The coaches and players have to be wondering where they stand. Not even a posting that I have seen to date. I wonder if some more player releases will be forthcoming? The new A.D. must have basketball on his mind. We can see competing in women's Ice hockey is not a priority. All other Hockey East teams are working hard as a group right now. With out coaches in place who is driving the players at this point. I would imagine the interim coaches contracts have or will be expiring very soon. Maine will miss Kirkup next year (Duluth got a nice pick-up). It would be tough to recover if anymore players got nervous about the direction of the program and leave.

They did this when they hired Lewis too.

Presumably her contract was immediately terminated when she was let go...but I'm sure they had to give the Reichenbachs a good portion of her compensation for the remainder of the fiscal year for assuming her entire workload between them.

I'm sure they don't want to have anyone else in place prior to July 1 so they don't have to pay two people. If their plan is not to promote Ricky then they'll probably put him back on his assistants salary July 1 and wait as long as possible to hire a head coach to try and save a few dollars. If it is to promote Ricky then they'll wait and save money by not hiring a new assistant til the end of summer.

This University will do anything in it's power to do things "on the cheap". It's disgusting and a total disservice to the players, and even to their conference because Maine could be a very good program if it had been funded at the right level 8 or 10 years ago before the rise of programs like BC/BU and the re-emergence of Northeastern. I can't imagine Hockey East has much recourse, but I do wonder sometimes if they would ever put pressure on a member school to step up their support.

It is a SAD State of affairs concerning the W-Hockey Program...this program did have a lot of up side years back and its ONLY too bad that Shawn Walsh wasn't still around...he would have been a PLUS to strenghten this Program...not thru Coaching but in making sure that the University was on the same page as the Mens Program.

While I agree that it's a sad state of affairs, I disagree that it would be different if Shawn Walsh were alive. This team was poorly supported and underfunded even back when Shawn was alive. Shawn would have worried about his program, just like other coaches do. There isn't a women's program at any school that is funded well because a men's hockey coach said to make it so.

Re: UMaine Black Bears 2013-14 season

No official word out on coaching yet? I thought it was a done deal. Anyone have a link to any news announcements?

Re: UMaine Black Bears 2013-14 season

Maine is all set with their coaching staff. No announcement needs to be made - nothing has changed as the same co-coaches who finished the season will return and are currently recruiting. The job posting is/was a formality. Relax and enjoy your summer! Maine Hockey will be just fine!

Well, when the news last fall was that a national search would commence following the playing season, I would think some sort of announcement would be forthcoming on the results of said national search. And/or if interim co-coaches are named permanent head coaches, an announcement would be entirely appropriate.

Agreed - if you say you are doing a national search and then make no announcement it would be reasonable to assume you are still looking.....

"OR" holding back on naming a Coach or Co-Coaches until later, which would mean they are counting their BEAN$....not willing to start paying a Salary...which would have to be a increase to paying a Assistant Coaches Salary...I would assume their Salarys increase two-fold..?
