UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

I think for me personally, what is most concerning isn't so much the end result, or the 20 win season, or 5th place in HEA, or 20th in NPI, etc. It's the fact that there was seemingly little to no progress made over the course of the season. Barr sounded like a broken record week in and week out, "culture", "identity", "that's on us" (coaching staff", etc. yet nothing changed. Not disputing the new faces, not disputing the adjustment from juniors to college, etc. but I'd have at least liked to see some overall improvements. Sure some of the freshmen showed signs of promise but in large, the juniors and seniors seemingly regressed for whatever reason, Boija followed in Ostman's footsteps, and the coaching staff seemingly had no response to any of the shortcomings.

Is it on par with Gendron's uMaine, probably not, but is it disappointing? The disappointment isn't the end result but rather how we got here.

I want to preface this by saying that I do not have nor claim to have any insider information or connections within the program. I say all of this only as a dedicated fan who follows the team very closely.

It is going to be a natural part of life in college sports going forward that there will be more roster fluctuations and roster moving activity, with unlimited free transfers. That being said, when I look at the roster this year, unless there are guys planning to leave for reasons like feuds with teammates or with the coaches, I only see a few guys that I think are likely to be transferring. I think Coughlin and Peluso are highly likely to be gone, and I wouldn't be shocked to see Motew go either, on account of lack of playing time. Others that I could see transferring but I think are less likely include James (wasn't playing much early on, but he did play more later in the year and he's a local kid, so he also could stay), and possibly Lipinski (seemed to fall into the doghouse a few different times this year). Guys like Nobes and Calafiore look like transfer candidates, but they're both juniors and haven't left yet, so if their concern was playing time, I think they would have already left. They both strike me more as guys who have accepted their depth role and aren't likely to go anywhere. The name I think everyone will be interested in all offseason is Poirier; though I suppose its possible, I dont think he's a transfer candidate, I expect he will either return to Orono or sign with Carolina. If anyone transferred out who wasn't listed here, I think that would be a bad sign of the health of the team, to differing levels depending on who it was of course.

On recruiting, my biggest take is that, like Peterson last year, Ludvig Lafton is a guy they should bring in this coming year, and not risk losing him. I think he's the best defenseman recruit we have in the pipeline currently, and with losing a minimum of three defensemen to graduation, they'll need some reinforcements there. Mistlebacher obviously looks to be the best forward of the bunch, but reading ineverquit's description of him on his recruiting spreadsheet, I think Rowan Calvert could be a guy similar to Gerrior, who plays that aggressive style and someone that could be overlooked at first. At goalie, who knows what will happen. I think its been correctly identified by most of us that G is the position of biggest need, but I'm honestly not sure if there will be any changes in the goalie room. None of them are seniors, and unless Boija signs a pro contract (which I do think is possible), it might just be the same group of guys again next year, and hope that some offseason training and time with Alfie is enough to shore up their game. Because what are you going to do, cut Boija, or cut Rousseau? I really doubt it. Even if you cut Gage Stewart to bring in someone else, one of those three has to be the third stringer, and that wouldn't be ideal.

The portal entry window is much shorter this year, so news could be coming in hot as soon as the national championship ends. I still have a lot of faith in the coach to improve the team for next year.

FWIW someone in the FB group reporting they talked to JP multiple times since his injury and he has no intentions on leaving.

I think I've retired from the roster construction game. Too many variables- does an NHL team have developmental concerns? is an agent/advisor unrealistic about playing time and value on the open market? did some random school fall in love with the guy and offer an unreasonable number?

I want Maine to devote the necessary resources to player acquisition to be in the top 4-5 of the league. Beyond that, I will sit back and learn the new guys' names in the fall.

I thought Gerrior really improved over the season. At times his line caused some havoc, other times they took some bad penalties.
Gerrior definitely a bright spot, hope he comes back.
The player that confused me the most was Marques, great skater good with the puck and good shot. Has a ton of untapped potential but at times just didnt show much. I hope he returns but I wont be surprised if he goes, its like being a black bear wasnt clicking. Idk

If the incoming class next year starts with Mistelbacher, Voronin, Lafton, and Calvert that's really good in my eyes. Not sure where Barr is going to look to bolster the center position, but we definitely need some play drivers there (Scholle and Komarov aren't it IMO). I do wonder if Maine will be in on a guy like Filip Ekberg (teammates with Gerrior, Carolina prospect). I'll be interested to see Sparkee's wishlist of CHL guys on the recruiting thread over the next few weeks/months.

If Nobes would have expected a larger role after how much he played his soph year, I could definitely see him leaving. Calafiore and Peluso would be guys who could benefit from a change in scenery so I think they both test the portal. I'm not entirely sure why Coughlin didn't play much as his defensive metrics were really solid and hope he gets more playing time next year.

I would be bummed if Nadeau signs a pro contract, but not surprised. If Montreal saw enough to offer him more than the 1 year deal they put on the table for him last offseason, then it wouldn't shock me to see him leave. I don't honestly think Boija signs a pro deal and comes back, and I'd be okay with that provided he makes whatever mechanical adjustments he needs to get back to the level we've come to expect. Rousseau definitely needs some refinement to his angles and positioning heading into next year before I'm willing to take him serious as a #1 guy.

I would have to imagine there's a high-impact transfer lined up, or at the very least a guy or two they like that they hope to be able to convince to get to Orono. Preferably a center, as you said, but any forward will do, especially if he can bring some combination of size, goal scoring touch, and leadership (obviously all three would be preferable!). I criticized Komarov last night for the wretched play that led to the dagger 3rd goal for BC, but in general I still like him as a player, though I agree I don't really see him as a Top 6 option, more of a middle six guy. I know Ive already mentioned him about 500 times this year, and apologies for not giving it a rest, but Taylor Makar was desperately missed by the team this year, and if they could get a guy in that mold to come here it would do wonders. I did find it interesting that big transfer additions were a key part in the big rise Maine had in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, and they went light on them headed into 2026, with only one (Max Scott, and though he is a good player, I don't think he's a great player like Harrison was, who was also a transfer in).

I know I'm not alone in thinking that Komarov would take a step forward this year. His play driving fell off a cliff as he got exposed to more meaningful minutes this year and his defense also took a hit. Pichette and Gerrior were both very effective players so if Barr can add to the offensive lineup and get those guys back to the bottom six that will help the whole lineup next year.

I'll move most of my recruiting talk to that thread, but the list of committed forwards is extremely wing-heavy. Maybe Barr thinks some of the players will translate down the middle? Hopefully the portal and CHL offers up some ready-made solutions for the roster next year.

Heres what I have brainstormed for next seasons team as of now.

I think it's likely Coughlin and Motew transfers for more playing time. Lipinski, James, Peluso, Boija and Stewart are possible to transfer (due to lack of playing time). Nadeau, Poirier and Boiya with potential pro contracts. Fowler stays for his "5th" year. Calafiore would have left before the season if he was expecting more playing time and I think he could be one of the house settlement roster exemptions that allowed us to be at 28 instead of 26. Scott transfer here before this past season so he probably stays. Scholle/Russell probably stays for their senior year. Komarov, Pichette, Marques, Gerrior probably stay as well.

Djurasevic already transfered once and will probably still for his senior year. Nobes would have transfered before the season if he was expecting more playing time. Usereau, Langlois and Peterson stay. I think Rousseau stays for sure and stewart is probably the other house settlement roster exemption that allows us to be at 28 instead of 26.

The only recruits I know 100% are coming in this year is Siciliano. I don't know if Calvert/Mistelbacher (05's) have signed their athletic scholarship agreement yet, but I assume they are 100% coming in as well.

Any forward with the risk of leaving to go pro or entering the transfer portal can be replaced by Van Gorp/Campbell/Voronin/McKinnon/Fleece/TPA.

Van Gorp originally said he was coming in 2026 when he announced his commitment but statsically performed worst (0.63ppg) than Campbell/Voronin/McKinnon/Fleece so he could get pushed back a year. Campbell original said he was coming in 2027 when he announced his commitment but is statistically performing better (1.29ppg) than a Gorp/Voronin/McKinnon/Fleece/ and many transfer portal fowards so he could come in this year.

Voronin (1.04ppg), McKinnon (.86ppg) and Fleece (.96ppg) also have high upside and are near 1ppg. Just to reference Poirier was at (1.33ppg) and Marques (1.22ppg) in their last CHL season (including playoffs). Poirier had 1.07 ppg in the NCAA this year and Marques .70ppg, so if we brought in any of Campbell/Voronin/McKinnon/Fleece then they would probably be around .5-1ppg forwards in the NCAA as freshmen.

I think lafton comes in this year. I'm unsure about Bosland and Wasmer in terms of their development so either one or both could potentially be brought in depending on roster spot allocations. I'm thinking more likely that the 1 or 2 other defensemen spots will be filled by transfer portal additions.

Goalie wise we better pray Boija can get back to form, Rousseau can improve or get an incredible transfer portal addition.

I was just going to post something to this effect. The macro season result....not totally unexpected......the micro results from game to game is where the real issues are.

Maine needs better funding to buy players.....but there also needs to be some adjustments by the coaching staff to figure out why players are regressing.

Josh was one of the best players on the ice the last few weeks. His line mates were dragging him down. Scholle couldn't hit the net, and even Fowler looked out of sorts last night compare to normal.

If you want a solid base next year your ideal returning players would be offensively:

Nadeau, Poirier, Fowler if he uses last year of eligibility

That's your base

Losing Holt stinks. But we aren't losing as much glue as we did this year. The rest of the D should be much better if they return

Our biggest issue right now is goaltending which is a huge red flag

BU with more NHL talent than Maine has had in many years lost to UConn and finished behind Maine in HE. Not that it helps Maine or its fans but just shows how shit can go sideways

Welfare check on IceCrap after Quinnipiac loses to barely .500 Clarkson.

Clarkson or another unranked ECHC team winning their tourney will really screw someone since Quinnipiac still likely an at large
