UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

I don't understand this "Maine blows late/close games" thing. Before the PC loss Maine was 4-0-1 in OT, and the 1 tie was a shootout win. Maine came back from 2 goals down with 10 minutes left just last weekend! They scored with 2:30 left to tie night two in Denver! Djurasevic scored with less than 10 minutes left to send the Lowell game in Portland to OT. There were third period/multi-goal comebacks against Colgate and BU. Go back to last year and you have Maine trailing the Hockey East semi with less than 10 minutes left and eventually winning in double overtime?

Have there been some games where Maine gave away a late lead? Sure! But it isn't like Maine is 0-12 in late/close situations. It's probably about even at worst.

Barr/the coaching staff were up front that this year was going to be a step backwards. Even with the recruiting shifting to the Q, this is a young team. It's playing like a young team. This is going to be the first year that Barr has won fewer games than he did previously (7-15-23-24). If Maine goes .500ish down the stretch (which the schedule suggests), that's going to be 18/19 wins, probably 20th or so in the country. In a rebuilding year, that's fine. Are there legitimate questions? Sure! This being the second time a goaltender has peaked and then regressed is a bit concerning. I'm a broken record on this, but I'd like a bit more information about whether we are spending any money in recruiting. The guys coming in all seem fine to good, do we have a chance to even get in the room with the higher end guys?

None of us are in the locker room, I'm not really going to fantasize or speculate about what's going on motivationally or whatever. These guys are all adults, and they all know that this tape will follow them when they are trying to latch on wherever. They're trying.

I will say, per the BDN talk above, some sort of REALISTIC look at recruiting, Maine's place in the world, etc. would be A LOT more useful than the long article this weekend on why Maine hockey can't just recruit a team of all Maine kids. That was ridiculous.

Why was Vaselineski riled up enough to get into that scrap? Does he want opposing forwards spearing him after the whistle??

Predicting Maine falls out of the poll.

Barr's recruiting is definitely lacking right now....and we can't blame it all on NIL. Even if you exclude the BIG programs + BC/BU + NoDak/Denver.....Maine is getting roasted on the recruiting trail by the likes of Providence, UMass, UConn, Northeastern & Quinnipiac. Even UNH seems to be reeling in some decent recruits.....
No love for Merrimack's recruiting? Right now, they have 2 of the top 5 scoring freshman in HE (Parker LaLonde and Justin Gill). Just sayin'

FYI, Black Bears are my secondary rooting interest as we have a home in western Maine.

I think that all possible reasons why Maine is struggling this season should be on the table…including the coaching staff. Sorry if that butt hurts some of Barr’s most ardent supporters. The truth lies somewhere between DrewS and the Barr cheerleaders.

Maine has the 5th highest winning percentage it has had in the last 15 years. I think that "struggling" is a bit strong. This isn't Ohio State football where the program is so hugely resourced as compared to its peers that a season with a .577 winning percentage should never happen. Maine had multiple seasons with a winning percentage under .300 in the last decade!

I think that the point I (and others) am making is R-E-L-A-X. Not every loss is a pronouncement of impending doom, not every bad night for a player means he quit on the team, not every player absence is a grand conspiracy.
