UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

Wasn’t pretty but take anything we can get right now. Fowler, Poirier and Nadeau showed up tonight. Fowler deserves a letter in my opinion, he’s the heart and soul of this team.
I agree. He always tries his hardest and loves killing penalties. Sticks up for his teammates. He’s often seen trying to rile up the boys on the bench. Maybe give him an A for Christmas.

I take it back on Djurasevic.

They really are Dr Jeykll and Mr Hyde, within the same game. Hell, within the same period sometimes. Tonight was not a pretty win, but it was a win. Barring something borderline unprecedented, the NPI is basically dead, so my priority is HE points the rest of the way. Despite my reservations on this team, I still dont think getting hot and going on a run is out of the question. It will give us additional reasons to keep watching until March (or maybe April :) )

Anyone have any idea what 2 wins next weekend does for NPI in terms of predicting where they can end up?
That would only get them to around 33rd.

You can use the customize tool on CHN to figure out hypothetical things.

Click customize tab, then select Maine, scroll down, then pick the wins for future games…

Very helpful, thank you.

There’s a path, for sure. But it’s a tight rope. They need to clean up d zone coverage, start getting .915+ save % goaltending, take care of the damn puck, get healthy, get their feet moving, and start outworking teams again.

I have been disappointed in their upperclassman to this point. They need to have some pride and not let this season go to waste. And put a letter on Fowler’s jersey yesterday.

Another informative barr interview yesterday.

This is the sound of a frustrated coach who knows his guys are underperforming, but hasn't yet been able to unlock the solution, even when he is seeing it in front of him every single day. The bit about "your best team isn't always about playing the most talented players" kind of cuts through to what he is seeing that needs to be fixed (FWIW I detest the buzzword of "culture", but I get where he is going with it). Not sure last night's OT win solves anything, other than avoiding what could have been another catastrophic result. Having a break coming up may be the best thing that can happen to UMaine right now. Long way to go and it's all still to play for ...

I finally got a chance to see them in person for the first time. Did they look better than against UNH, Colgate, UVM, the Q collapse? I was there w friends who knew nothing of the team, who were remarking about how sloppy and lazy they looked and how bad the decision making was especially when trying to clear the puck. I thought they sucked except for maybe three or four 3 min chunks of the game. Some individuals look hungry and most don’t. Some that look hungry are still making bad decisions as if they don’t trust their teammates or the system. Frank turned it on for a bit after the end after giving up a goal and making several massive unforced errors. Holt was off too. I thought this was the worst they played all year. Nifty passing and finishing but it looked like further regression in team play and cohesion. Let’s see how this weekend goes

Are we primed for back to back home sweeps?

Yet the clawed their way back into in the end and won in OT. So that is a good characteristic that offsets any poor individual performances. Wins by a team trump individual weak games. Losses by the team amplify that weak performances of the individual.

To me it was one of the better happenings of the season. People think I am crazy for preferring close grind it out wins. Everyone feels uneasy watching. But the more you have of those the more it forges the team metal.

I agree coming back multiple times is a good sign, but don't let the result cover the symptoms. The play right now just isn't at the level it should be. Hopefully the winter break hits the reset button.
