UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

That blows. I can't say they didn't play pretty good but the Powerplay not cashing in was bad and Irving stood tall. UAss is middle of the pack tops though
 
I dont want to say Irving stole it for them, but he played a big part in them winning. Maine I dont even think played that badly, though special teams weren't great. I think discipline is now officially a problem though, so many penalties yet again. It was previously a Ben Barr hallmark to have disciplined play, but that has certainly not been the case this year.

I agree with this assessment. Watched tonight’s game in person and didn’t think we looked sluggish by any means but not capitalizing on our PP and giving UMass too many PP combined with their rock solid minder were the difference. We need to find a way to play with intensity but not end up in the box because of it.
 
You know what. We may have lost tonight to Assachusetts. But IceShit81 just lost to Yale. Where you at bitch? Yeah maybe you should just stay in your trailer loser. These inbreds are laughing at you fucknut.
 
The only teams in Hockey East with winning records are Northeastern (3-0), Maine (3-1) and Providence (2-1)

Every team has at least one win and Northeastern is the only unbeaten. The entire league is down and parity reigns.
 
Maine came out in 1st OK, 1st PP was good but nothing to show for it. 2nd PP looked like crap and Maine never looked up to speed after that. Still a good weekend, going to Amherst and come out with a split is fine by me. So many pucks came out from Umass goalie but they packed it in around him and cleared the puck. UMass is well coached and they didn't roll over, so props to them.
 
After watching Thursday's game, I saw no way Umass beats Maine on Friday. As a long time follower of college hockey I should have known better. Boy, was I wrong! The game was closer than the final shutout score. UMass scoring on two PP goals ended up being huge. Maine right now (and has been), very undisciplined. These two teams play very aggressive fore check and give no time and space. I think this style was the main reason Maine swept BU last weekend.

All things considered Irving played about as well as he could on Thursday night as well. Maine probably should have hit double digits that night. Had to figure Carvel would have them ready to play after the way Maine took it to them the night before.

Haven't watched the tape from last night as I was at a concert but I'll probably throw it on at some point today. Sounds like some of the same issues we've been seeing with ill-timed penalties. Hate thinking that undisciplined play would hold this team back from taking the next step but still a lot of season to work that out, even if it means Barr making some scratches that might not be popular.

The refs didnt do any side any favors bad calls all the way around Holton is awful
 
Whacky game last night, at no time did Maine really get dominated but the game just kept slipping away from them. Felt like the boys got a bit frustrated when they didn’t get the early goals they probably deserved.

The penalties have to be addressed which I’m sure they will with some healthy scratches. As for the team, the d zone play isn’t good enough, the slightest bit of sustained pressure from the opposing team and it feels inevitable that they’ll be scored on. Last year’s team was able to bend but not break, this year it feels like they’re okay with breaking since they’ll just going to score on the other end. Not a recipe for success long term.

Only player critique I have from last night is Peterson, not sure he’s ready to play as many minutes as he does. Reminds me a lot of Chabrier his freshman year where it’s clear the talent is there but it needs some polishing. No doubt he’s going to be a good one but at times he’s very sketchy with the puck.
 
Those two early PK's for UMass in the first really were momentum killers for Maine.

Thought they played a solid road game for the first half or so, but ultimately that 5x3 PP was the dagger that they never really recovered from. Really love the way UMass played that 5x3 with 2 guys below the goal line, their puck movement was so crisp.

Different game if Scott and/or Langlois could capitalize on their point blank chances. Not really sure how either of those stayed out.

Boija definitely wants that third goal back but the damage was kind of already done at that point.

Yes, Peterson will be a good one. However, I agree with you there are some plays from him that are head scratchers. And can’t be overlooked. The way he defended that empty net goal should be cause for a benching. I think I could take the worst forward on the team at skating backwards and have them defend that better. I mean, give me the third string goalie and they would defend that better. He essentially just got out of the way and let the guy go unimpeded towards the net. It is the most ridiculous job of defending I’ve seen from any defensemen this season. If I’m Coach Barr I would send him for laps, push ups, sprints, and then bench him. There is no way that should be tolerated.

Agree with you on peterson. Been telling my wife the same thing.
