UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

Awhile back a few posts on MC having former pro players on Roster. One of them is Gill, Bridgeport Islanders. Not sure if he played any games?? BBall isn't letting G league players play D1 BBall. Thats interesting, wonder how much or not? NIL money he is getting??

G Leaguers actually CAN play in basketball. The distinction is whether they signed an NBA contract.

I believe Gill is the only one. As long as he is fully eligible under current NCAA rules, I have no problem with it. Would be great if Merrimack could get highly touted young players to come in (sometimes mid-season ;) ), but as a non-blueblood program, they have to find players by different means. Hate the rule, don't hate the player.

From Mike McMahon's newsletter, answering a question about Lowell's resources:

I would guess that they are behind Boston College, Boston University, UConn, UMass, and Providence in rev-share/NIL.

Probably in line with Maine and Northeastern, and ahead of Merrimack, New Hampshire, and Vermont.

Thanks, I saw a couple guys deemed ineligible in bball, didnt realize it was just guys who signed a nba contract. Has that been worked out in court yet.?

I believe there was an SEC basketball player who was declared ineligible recently. A lot of it is still on a case by case basis.

I will reiterate what I posted this weekend: Shawn and Grant were once in a lifetime coaches and we were fortunate to have them both for an extended period. It also can not be overstated how few teams took the sport seriously back then. In the 1990s (12-team tournament) only 17 teams made three or more appearances in the national tournament. 12 made five or more. There were one-offs like Brown and Princeton, but only a relative handful were really trying. In just the five seasons since the pandemic, there have been 23 different teams who have multiple invites and 35 overall. Add in Uncle Harold's gold card and Maine had a leg up on all but a handful of schools. Those advantages are gone.

Earlier I mentioned that it was unfathomable that Merrimack was a difficult matchup for Maine. Back in those days we had guys at the Sunday night practice who would have been first or second line at Merrimack, but they spent their Fridays and Saturdays in street clothes rather than on the ice. We stockpiled blue chippers like so much cordwood. And we could do that because Shawn and Grant could sell sand in the Sahara.
Went to Merrimack a bunch of times to see Maine. It was a fairly easy drive on 495 (vs.128 into Boston) and my sister and nephews lived in Merrimac MA, so it was two birds/one stone for a weekend.

My brother and SIL would come down from Bangor/Lincoln/Portland, and a good time was had by all. I always said that a Maine victory at that cold old barn was as close as you could get to a guaranteed league win back then.

Having said that, it's good seeing the Mack becoming a legit factor in HE.

(Just not tonight, if you please.)

If Sway isn't playing Team USA is a tough group to root for. I've been anti-Tkachuk since Martin Mercier whipped Keith's ass back in 1990.
Brady is an asshole on the ice, yes. He has Jackie written all over him.

But damned if he isn't a little sweetheart in interviews. As in,genuinely nice.

Fuck it, GO USA!!!

I was on my up to Alfond on Saturday and yes it was brutal travel. I went back home before I got to far.
As far as the Measles I don't remember what year, I was worried as I had no proof of vaccination but knew I had measles when I was 2. I think in the end they dropped the requirement to get in, not sure why. I was pretty dedicated back then, I didn't miss a home game for years and didn't have season tickets, I bought standing room . Pam would let me buy a whole seasons worth of standing room. It was a blast going to games back then.
My first hockey game ever was the first Maine game ever. I had just enrolled after flying in from Japan, where I spent 5 years as a USAF dependent, and had never lived in a hockey climate before.

So, I was one of the clueless fans who clapped politely when Maine was called offside.

Whatever, fell in love with the game. That first tilt (maybe vs Andover or AIC?, been a while) was the only time I ever sat for a game. Never missed a home game for the next four years, and never sat down again. Stood at the rail at the far blue line and became hopelessly obsessed with Maine hockey.

And I've never regretted it.
