UConn to apply to Hockey East

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

If it means that Maine doesn't get every team through Alfond in a given season, it isn't worth it to expand, to me. BC/BU/UNH not coming to Orono in a given year is completely unacceptable.

well how else do you get down the number of conference games?

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

I like your schedule.........Maine and UNH should play home and away every year (Fri/Sun).

It'd be tricky to do something special like that, but you could do it with another offsetting home-and-home between UNH and another of the gang of four.

Meh... as a fan, I have to say I would definitely not be in favor of both league games against one team in one weekend... that would mean we would see Northeastern, or UNH, or BC etc etc once in October then not at all, or not at all until the end of February. Can't say I'd be on board with that.

I'm certainly sympathetic to that idea. I guess my time at ND has made me more used to the idea of having two home or two away series with some teams (even desirable teams) not making it in during a season. As far as ND goes, I feel pretty strongly that the schedule is going to need to involve mostly series with both games home or both games away (with one opponent some kind of home-and-home series, probably one-offs, to give overall home-away balance). And on the NU side, I'd probably prefer to do both home or both away with Vermont and Maine, but a Friday-Sunday home-and-home is at least palatable there. I could definitely see doing that arrangement for the three "distant" New England teams and have ND be the only one doing two-home or two-away.

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

I don't think UConn would even be this deep into the talks if they weren't serious about it. This isn't something you can half *** and they know that. UConn has shown in the past that when they make up their minds to do something they do it right. Remember football has been to what 5 bowl games in 7 seasons as a Big East member, not to mention a top 10 practice facility in the country. Basketball was nothing when they joined the Big East 20 years ago, and they now have 3 national championships. If they do it I have faith that they are going to do it right

I think that when Penn State jumped in......a lightbulb went off in UConn's head.

The teams that are close in proximity can play 2 different opponents on some weekends.

Would you like to join the ECAC then?.......because that is the way that it will be. I believe that UNH will be home and home every year. In some years we'll see BC and Notre Dame or BU and Notre Dame 4 times. And with some other programs in the league picking it up a notch (Lowell, Merrimack, Providence).........I'm OK with that.

Yeah......after trying to work out the schedule, I can see where it might be difficult to achieve.

That is what I would anticipate... so there are negatives no matter how you look at it IMO. If you play each team twice then you either have to do away with the home and home weekends, or you have to plan to see a team on only one weekend through the season. Or if you could keep some home and homes by going to more than a 22 game league schedule, but then you have an unbalanced schedule... also a negative IMO.

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

I would expect that you would play everyone but Notre Dame home & away for a 22 game league schedule. My guess is that Notre Dame will play 5 teams at home twice , 5 teams away twice and 1 team (UConn?) home & home.

I know you are being somewhat facetious, but that could actually be true. Plus, HE may have made an overture accompanied by a statement of fact that the time had come to get on the train because it was leaving the station. And finally, I think the new President, AD, (and former Acting AD) of UConn really like the idea. It is a chance for them to make a difference in the Athletics program right away. Make a mark early, so to speak, and put their stamp on it.

Well, my perspective, I would be incredibly disappointed if they didn't make UConn write something in stone. IMO, given the current proposals things won't work. Further, I'd make sure that UConn's commitment couldn't be walked back without penalty.
Patman, I don't think this happens without UCONN being all in, an dI think they will be. It isn't like they will not fund the scholarships or something. The arena question is one that I think Hockey East will either buy or they won't. My guess is that they will. And if UCONN needs an extra year or two to complete the expansion of Freitas, well, that won't be a dealbreaker by any means. Just my sense of things...and look, it isn't like this is a school that hasn't made moves like this in the past, even the relatively recent past. And they have seen what can happen if you don't go all in with what they did in basketball in the early 1980s...The move to the Big East looked like a disaster at one point when UCONN was the only Big East team never to have gotten an NCAA bid in a league that had 2 Champs, 4 Championship game participants, 6 Final Four participants. Compare that with how they approached football and see the learning curve. We'll see an appraoch much closer to that with hockey. Even with womens hockey, they went out and brought in a highly successful coach when they joined Hockey East.

I wonder if the one team wouldn't be BC?

Bear in mind too, that they started Women's Hockey from scratch the year they joined HE. They had to get somebody, so they went out and got someone with a great track record at that level.

Ditto. Especially when an RPI could step in and be a credible 12th team should HEA formally go to 12. They've addressed the scholarship situation, their on-campus arena seats 5K, they're no strangers to HEA, and they have a long-standing commitment to hockey. Distance? Prior to Union subbing for Army, they were UVM's travel partner.

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

With all due respect, RPI and Holy Cross have next to zero national name recognition and do not have the resources of a UConn when it decides to do something. We saw RPI at UConn this year. They might have had 25 fans there and they finished fourth in the tournament.

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

When a team applies to a conference, how is it typically handled? League vote? By whom? Coaches? ADs? Is it a majority vote? Or does it have to be unanimous?

Has UConn officially applied?

Doesn't RPI get frequent mention in Tom Clancy novels?
