UConn to apply to Hockey East

...
I recall that earlier this summer RIT declined an invitation from the WCHA in hopes of an ECAC spot.
Wha?

Wait wha?

Are you sure it was the New WCHA and not the CCHA? And why didn't some of the AHA teams want to go to the CCHA?

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

If they can sell beer at the XL Center then I'm all for it... but crowds of 3000ish are going to feel pretty small in an arena that seats 15K+

At least it would balance the league at 12 teams.

Maybe they could come up with some agreement wtih HEA to play a handful of "bigger" games at the XL Center and the remainder on campus. What is the capacity of the Freitas Ice Forum?

Officially, it's listed as 2000, but I've seen it at 1667 in the past (the Frietas dedication night vs. Sacred Heart was declared a 'sellout' but was just a touch over 1700); they may have re-evaluated based on potential SRO in the walkways.

In other words, I'd expect that some, if not all, league games would be played in Hartford until an update or rebuild of Frietas occurs.

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

I know it's a slightly greater distance than Hartford, but is Mohegan Sun Arena a feasible option?

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

There's no ice at Mohegan.

Interesting thought though as it would leave it square between Groton/New London and Norwich. Not sure if either is a hockey market but it isn't the worst idea.

edit: hell, let's make an arena the capstone of the a "revitalize willimantic" project :p

Because the CCHA was doomed. It was no secret that all the teams were either going to leave for the NCHC or the Big Ten, leaving the remaining CCHA and WCHA programs to consolidate, the only question was what would be the name?

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

I can tell you as an avid Tiger fan, we want better competition. You guys are a great league and we know it, we just need the cards to play in our favor with a spot opening up in the ECAC and we'll be all over. I recall that earlier this summer RIT declined an invitation from the WCHA in hopes of an ECAC spot.

If that was the case, it was a mistake from a purely-hockey perspective, anyway.

The left-over WCHA teams will forge a stronger and more visible conference than the ECAC is right now, IMO... Much stronger.

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

Too bad URI never followed thru on their goal of Div 1 hockey vice club then the Irish could have stayed west

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

Wouldn't UConn be "traitors" if they left their current conference for a better one? I'd hate to see anyone file a law suit or something...

For now. Not in the long run when as a conference of small name schools there's no big draws to fill the stadiums. We still have some traditional power programs in the ECAC to get everyone excited. The new WCHA doesn't really. In 5-10 years, the new WCHA will be as irrelevant, or worse off, than ECAC Hockey.

Re: UConn to apply to Hockey East

Before Hockey East goes looking for a 12th team, make sure Notre Dame is going to be the 11th team for more than just a couple years until they finally do the inevitable and join the Integer. Would be just great if we added UConn and then ND ditched us in 2015 or so and we were back to 11 teams.

That's ok. We could then just kcik {PROVICED out of HOCKEY RAST and be back to 10!

I believe they called us "traders" when we left. Now I'm sure there are BC alums who are traders, but not all of us are.

Adding ND to HE was dumb

Adding Yukon would be dumber

My only question, If Malloy is such a big hockey fan and he wants to revitalize Hartford, why isn't he working harder to try to lure the NHL, that will be a bigger draw. Bring back the Whale!!! There's an emptyness in Hartford since the Whalers left. :(
I love the idea of UConn joining Hockey East, however, IMO, I think the HCC is WAY to big. I can understand a temporary solution until Freitas is "renovated" but I think a sold out smaller arena ON CAMPUS would be better than the embarassment of seeing the HCC 25 or 50% full. Look at the NCAA regionals, very low attendance and it was very noticable. THe only way to make HCC look as if there is a lot of people there would be too close the upper bowl and force people to the lower bowl. I would love to show my support for my teams but when you add all the concessions and parking and fuel, going to games for me would be expensive. Expense wise, it could compare to an NHL game. I expect that the current $5 ticket would close to triple in a new/renovated HE approved arena.
