UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

Re: UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

Well, I hope Bentley does get to play Union, because Union is playing in the consolation.:D :D

Nice crowd this afternoon. Pretty much a sellout. The only seats not filled were the team comp seats in a couple of sections.

Exciting game too. I have no idea how U lost the game except UMass made the most of their chances by getting big guys in front of the net and ramming it home in the third period. Three unanswered after U took a two goal lead into the third. Union rarely had anyone in front taking the abuse. But otherwise Union dominated. Very fast game too.

Would have liked to stayed for the UConn game but I miscalculated and was underdressed. I forgot how cold that barn can be. I left pretty well frozen after the first game.

So, Bentley gets to play UMass for the first time ever tomorrow night; would like to make the trip down from Waltham, but not sure if I can swing it.

Re: UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

Giggidy giggidy. Smart guys win 4-1. Would like to see better execution on PP, but got better discipline staying out of the box tonight.

Well, they have given themselves a chance collect the biggest win in the programs history tomorrow night. 60 minutes of solid, smart hockey can do it.

Re: UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

Does anyone know what happened to UConn goalie Jeff Larson? He no longer appears on their roster and the goalie who played for the Huskies tonight, Garrett Bartus, was wearing Larson's number? Did he go back to Juniors? It is a shame because I thought he was one of the bright spots for UConn this season.

The USCHO report mentions it. "He replaces freshman Jeff Larson, who posted a 3.28 GAA in eleven games before deciding to leave campus and return home."

That's too bad. I saw Larson make a massive number of saves versus Air Force this year and was interested in how he would do.

I am thinking about driving 1.5 hours for Bentley-UMass game this evening; do you think that I will be able to get a ticket?

Not a problem. You will get in. That is what I am going to do. Show up and pay $5.00. Of course I will be watching the first game not the second.

RST and all,

You didn't miss much missing the UCONN game. That is a team that is so young. Man, looked at the roster and I think there were 2 seniors, lots of freshmen. And unlike some previous UCONN clubs, this one seems to always make the extra pass, instead of taking the shot when it's there. They have earned their 2-12-2 or whatever the record is. Might be the weakest team I've seen there in a number of years. Anyone know what happened to Larson? I was pretty unimpressed with Bartus. first two goals were carbon copies of each other. Shots to his glove side from the blueline.

The one positive note I saw was Ambrosie. His goal was all him. (can't remember if someone got an assist). He has some skill. Handles the puck well, gets in position, shoots. He was the one guy who wasn't afraid to shoot the puck. An all around good player...I think he could be one of those really top players in another year or two.

As far as this tourney goes, I've heard mostly positives abaout how it is run, how teams are treated even if it isn't the most exciting location. As someone said, Storrs is a company town, and when the company is on break it isn't going to be confused with Times Square. I'd love to see the program get a bit of a boost, and it might down the road a bit more. I did note that they have a couple of Canadians, not many, but a couple. I also heard a rumor that they are getting 1 or 2 scholarships. Not a lot, for sure, but any little bit helps.

Re: UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

Jim, Bruce has suffered long enough. He needs more than one or two scholarships. He needs a dozen.

That was a really good game yesterday between Union and UMass. What we need to complete the picture is some atmosphere, though. Some school needs to bring their band next year. Thats what makes a college hockey game special. Bands. JMHO.

Re: UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

Rank was amazing tonight. Add in a couple of weird goals for Bentley and there you have it.

Re: UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

Listening to the game, it sounds like UMass dominated possession for 48 minutes. Then Saturn lined up in the 7th House of Mercury, the rivers ran blood red, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse showed up, and Bentley scored two goals in 24 seconds, followed by a UMass 10 minute game misconduct.

Kyle Rank stood on his head, knitted a tea cozy, read some Voltaire, and stopped 39 of 40 shots.

Re: UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

Kudos to Bentley. The Falcons did the League proud last night.

As for UConn, what can one say? The talk of a tiny number of scholarships is coming a decade too late. That might have been helpful in Y2K, but it won't make a difference these days. The athletic department has to think much bigger than that if they want to keep the program. If they are not willing to get off the schneid, they should just close it down and run a club program.

How many, if any scholarships does UConn give currently?

I thought I heard the WRUC radio guys mention 2 as the number of scholarships but I'm not sure if I heard them right or if they were serious.

Two now or two coming next year? If next year, I suggest they go out and get a goalie and a defenseman or two.

Re: UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

I mentioned this on our Bentley thread, and I figured I would say it here too because I woke up this morning pinching myself that this game really happened.

Anybody whose been around the Bentley program for the last couple years is not 100% surprised by it, and umassfan49 you said it best by saying you wouldn't be entirely surprised. It's a credit to Coach Soderquist and everyone associated with a program that has its back to the wall in so many respects.

This win will help continue to legitimize a program that is often overlooked and wins like these and Canisius's win will help to continue to legitimize a conference that has a number of bad hockey teams, programs, and arenas.

This win feels gratifying on so many levels but not entirely shocking. To quote Adam Vinatieri after SB36, and by no means comparing this to that (so please do not skewer me...I wouldn't dare compare anything to my beloved Patriots super bowl wins haha): "We shocked the world but we didn't shock ourselves."

Congratulations to our Falcons!!!!

Re: UConn Hockey Classic - December 29-30

Actually, many AHA fans were not surprised either. The Bentley program has been building. And after all, I think UConn beat UMass awhile ago or at least tied them. (Union too, for that matter.) So most of us figured something like this would happen pretty soon. Congrats to Bentley that they made it happen for them.

I did have another thought about UConn though. If they were to add two scholarships per year for the next six years, that would get them competitive over time. It would take longer than their fans would want to see and would postpone the day that they could actually make some revenue off the sport. But it might be more feasible from the Athletic Department's standpoint.

What is the AHA policy on number of scholarships?
