UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

I was told that Mike Cavanaugh is hiring his own personel and that Dave Berard and Rich McKenna have been relieved of their duties. McKenna was certainly a sitting duck and does not have the resume as a former player or coach, but Berard is somewhat disappointing. I can see where Cavanaugh is coming from letting him go though. He needs the locker room to buy into him, not constantly look to Berard and potentially create a divide. Also, it has been well noted that Berard did not succeed during his last stint in hockey east as a recruiter.

Dover did you hear any names being mentioned for Cavanaugh's staff?

Well...I'm pretty sure scott palach will be joining the staff...was at BC with cav and was then the head coach at bowling green---is a very smart choice and will add a lot...the other I am guessing is going to be someone that has a handle on the talent pool...

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Between the NC$$ finalists Yale and Quinnipiac there was only a single player with CT residence and he was a transfer. There was a good reason for that. Neither of those schools could compete with the top HE schools for the CT talent. It matters what talent pool Cav has in mind when he makes his choices. BC and BU may not have to go to the ends of the earth to find players, but UConn is going to have to do that. A knowledge of the Canada including the far reaches and Francophone areas might be in order, for instance.

That's my view, too. That's why the choice of Cav was sort of a head scratcher to me. It isn't like UConn is suddenly going to be landing kids who grew up wanting to play for BC and BU. At least initially, UConn is going to have to establish itself with less well known players from where ever he can land them.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

It appears new head coach Mike Cavanaugh is going to have a tough time winning over the hearts of the Connecticut faithful.
It's always a difficult time for any new coach when they replace a legendary head coach.
Why aren't you folks screaming for the AD's head for letting the legend go?

Huh??

I don't know why, but I get the feeling the fan base is unhappy with the hire.
Also, after Gwoz, I got the feeling that Dave Berard was the fan base preference.
I swear, I thought I saw a legend born right here on this thread. :p

Well you thought right. But the guy they hired has a lot going for him too. The last sentence of yours we can do without, but we'll let it pass. And we make no bones about our healthy dislike for BC. A really really healthy dislike. But he is our guy now and we are gonna support him. And we will console ourselves with superior hoops and FB. :p

Uconn football is heading right where bc ended up under spaziani.

I'm convinced that some of you simply don't like the fact that this soon to be national empire hired their coach from your version of the evil empire.

Agreed. But heading there and getting there are two different things. Pasquoloni will be gone after this year despite his support on the Board. When Michigan, Maryland, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Louisville, and Central Florida all spank us badly, Warde Manuel will get the money to do what should have been done last year at the end of last season. We are all praying for either a smashing success or an abysmal failure this season. Nothing in between that might have the potential to prolong the agony for another year.

Berard was the emotional choice... but I don't think anyone was really upset when he got passed over. I really haven't seen many people that upset except for some random poster on a Hartford Courrant article... but I'm pretty sure they were related to Berard. :)

I leaned towards Gwoz mainly because he's won consistently at a high level as a head coach. I'm still absolutely content with Cav though. He was the best fit as far as recruiting and Hockey East is concerned.

Really with Gwoz and Cav as the two other finalists Berard just wasn't even in the cards.

I completely disagree with comparing PP to Cav. It's just silly... Hathaway hired PP. A cheap choice who would maintain the status quo (which he's failed to do.) Berard would have been the Hathaway hire.
