UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Jim, I think that UConn exhibited very little patience on Friday night and disrespected the opponent with risky play and SHU made them pay. On Saturday it was tied at zero for almost two periods, yet UConn maintained their composure and eventually the floodgates opened for them. That is exactly what they will need to do weekend after next. And playing conservatively protects the goalie. To wit, Grogan got the shutout Satuday night.

Four days to get ready for Robert Morris. Now the real work starts and the minds begin to focus.

Now that Warde Manuel has booked BYU for a home and home in football and helped to dismantle the Big East, it is time for him to take care of Coach Berard's contract for next year. C'mon, Mr. AD, let's get this done. We know there is a lot on your plate, but still ....

I have to agree with you on this. The guy has done a really great job. 4th place finish in the conference, winning record overall. 3-3-1 non-conference record including a win over Merrimack, no losing weekends after the break including some tough road wins. Guy sure demonstrated he can coach a hockey team I think. No need to look beyond the UConn bench for the next head coach in my mind. Plus if you look at his background its a good fit, too. he was the PC recruiting coordinator before coming to UConn so he knows that side of the game as well.

Tonight is the night. Let's see if the Huskies can finish what they started.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

I see Chris Lerch is picking RMU but I think this team is playing well and has been a little bit under the radar. Hope I'm right!

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Half way to the goal. Playoff style hockey. Take no chances. Nice jump from the bye week of rest.

A thoroughly enjoyable game to watch. Very impressed by Robert Morris. A couple bounces the other way and it could have been a different story. But the Huskies finished.

Now let's see if they have what it takes to seal the deal.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

A couple more comments about last night.

The UConn Band has finally started to figure out how to play at a hockey game. They sounded great and their timing (when to jump in and play) was great too. Well orchestrated you could say. The hockey sweaters completed the look of a really serious hockey band. And yes, boys and girls, they are sweaters, not jerseys, in hockey. Gotta learn the lingo if you are going to do this. Next year may see the advent of visiting bands at a game or two. So it is good we are getting this stuff straightened out now. Next year you will be competing as much as the guys on the ice. Just wait until the day that you go up against the Clarkson or Michigan bands! And if we are lucky, you may even be competing next weekend.

Last night, someone who obviously downloads music to his iPhone finally put me out of my misery. That music that they have been playing at all sports events worldwide is "Levels" by Avicii. Who knew?? (I guess everyone but me;);)

Finally I have been asked about a hundred times at UConn football games where people can get an authentic Huskies away sweater like the one I wear. Not so much at hockey games, but it is obvious that there will be a heck of a market going forward. They ought to sell them. Trivia question: my sweater has the name KRYGIER on the back and the number 18. Which of the three Krygier brothers does it honor? They were all outstanding. Check their points totals. And before you dismiss them as products of the D-3 era, note that one of them had a ten year NHL career. And he doesn't even hold the UConn alltime scoring record. His younger brother does. I know, because I missed my older son's only PeeWee hat trick that year to see the record broken.

Another nice hard-hitting grinding playoff win for the Huskies. They are the first team through to Rochester. But they haven't won anything yet and now we know they are capable of winning the AHA tournament. They are just that good, having just swept a team that won their own holiday tournament against Miami. So expectations have now ratcheted upwards. Just getting there will not be enough.

The Band sounded even better tonight. I am hoping that UConn will send them to Rochester. It would make a huge difference. There is an NC$$ berth at stake after all!!

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Off on business overseas for a few days so I will post a comment before I go ... and then shut up. I think this team is completely capable of winning in Rochester. Just play like they did this weekend, have confidence that when they fall behind not to panic, they will get it back. Just keep doing what they are doing.

So, there is an added sweetener if they do win next weekend. Since I think that QU will likely win the ECAC, the carrot will be ... drum roll please, UConn Band ... a return engagement with Quinnipiac in Providence. How sweet would THAT be?????

But first, there is the little matter of Niagara on Friday night ....

UConn would face the winner of Holy Cross-Mercyhurst. Niagara gets Canisius,

You sure? That would imply a reseed and that wasn't what Chris Lerch posted. He posted a fixed bracket diagram.

Edit: Guess you are right. Makes no difference at this time of year, really, though. Every game is tough.

I thought that was a well played game Saturday night. UConn played really good team hockey, Guys getting back, excellent defense, which is something I didn't see earlier in the season. Except for a brief period with about 4 minutes left, basically the final minute of the last power play, they played focused hockey, too. They got sloppy for that short period. I thought it contributed to RMU's final goal, but after that they seemed to get back on track again. Totally agree on the band, too. That provided a huge lift.

Dick, I have to agree with you on getting Berard under contract. He has done a very nice job with this team. And I love the way he coaches. He looks more like a basketball coach over there than a typical hockey coach. Seemed to be giving instructions to every line change, pointing out things to guys on the bench, yelling instructions to guys. And the video on UConnhuskies.com of him in the locker room post game is great. He was as excited as the players! Sign this guy up now.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

I don't post the brackets, although the AHA one on USCHO does say the teams will be reseeded after each round. It's always been that way.

Chris, the AHA site says that too. So UConn plays Mercyhurst who was the 6 seed and Niagara gets Canisius who started out as #7. Do you see anyone but Niagara taking this thing? If they don't do they still get a bid? Or is that your column for later in the week?

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Thanks to the Huskies for a great season! Especially the seniors!! Although I have followed and blogged about UConn Hockey for more than two decades, I had not had the opportunity to get to this many games for several years due to other weekend activities. This was a great season to become a reinvigorated fan again. Thanks so much, guys. It was lots of fun watching you. You were clearly the best UConn Huskies team I have ever had the pleasure of watching. By quite a lot.

I have already expressed my rather strongly held views on this topic. I think the test drive is over and the driver passed with flying colors.
Dick, I have to agree with all your sentiments. this was a terrific season. The end was a bit of a letdown. I honestly felt they were playign well enough to win it. But in hind sight I can't complain. And I'm really looking forward to next year already. With Dave Berard as the head coach. He absolutely earned it.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

I was really pulling for the Huskies this year. You've come a long way since I've started watching RIT play in 2006. Congrats on a great season and best of luck in the up coming years.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Thanks, lmg6841. With perhaps six more scholarships next year and this year's freshmen with a year under their belt, we have high hopes for next year. The AHA has been good for us. It will be sad to leave. Hope they maintain ties via OOC games.
