UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Good win by the Huskies last night. That showed lots of character. Big crowd in Worcester too.

Looks like HC has a relatively easier road to third place than anyone else. But Mercyhurst is definitely catch-able for fourth place if the Huskies win out from here (admittedly a big if). Mercyhurst has Niagara and Robert Morris, so perhaps there is an opening. I like that the Huskies have put themselves in position to control their own destiny. Now they have to seal the deal. That extra week to recover and heal would mean a lot.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

I had unexpected guests on Friday and didn't make it up to Storrs. I was very concerned though with the outcome. Figured they would give back all the good they did last weekend. But the Saturday victory showed some guts I thought, especially losing the way they had the night before. This team looks to have a little bit of iron in its spine. Two weekend left against teams that are beatable. I don't love having to play two at Army, and I'm not sure why the schedule ended up that way since most of the eastern schools are home-home. And I don't know what to make of Sacred Heart. They could decide they have just given up (and the way they lost to AIC suggests that is a possibility) or they might decide they want to go out with a win and be very tough.

Thanks to Sacred Heart for providing a perfect example of what can happen in this league when a team is taken lightly. I hope that the Huskies took note -- and take it to heart in a couple weeks.

Yup! that and memories of last year's epic collapse down the stretch will, I hope, give this team a little more focus over the next two weeks.

I take it that Grogan is the goalie now. I thought Bartos might start at Holy Cross last week, since it didn't sound like Grogan was particularly sharp Friday night, but he came right back with him and he did another credible job.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Big series starts tonight. Huskies need to keep up the hard nosed play.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Good win. Half way to the weekend goal. Creeping up in the standings. Now tied for fourth with Mercyhurst (on a percentage basis) with HC just ahead.

It is a battle. Every shift is important. Grind it out, guys!!

Four point weekend. Half way to winning out the final fortnight. A first round bye may be in the offing. Huskies fans have just now started to let themselves believe this could possibly be the very best year since 2000.

Standing in their way, Sacred Heart has started to play with confidence. They are NOT going to be a walkover next weekend, having suddenly started to take points from teams at the critical juncture. But I gotta like the Huskies' chances. They seem to be on a mission this year. It has been a very long time coming. The Huskies are playing for themselves, but they also owe it to their fans who have waited for 13 years.

I have two thoughts on UConn. First, I wonder if this team learned something from last season's collapse down the stretch. They seem to have focused much better this time. Second, I sure wish Sacred Heart wasn't starting to play better now. The decision to go with Grogan in the nets has been pretty positive, I have to say. Wonder if we might see Bartus for the 1st Sacred Heart game, though. Senior night plus it might be good to get him a little work before the playoffs in case he is needed. On the other hand it would take a bit of guts to do it. On the other hand, depending on what happens in other games, if they either have a bye secured or are out of it you might want to think about it for Saturday night.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Jim, there is no room for error in the pursuit of the bye. I expect the Huskies to come out emotionally on senor night, put in the hard work, and win. Think the question will be Saturday night which is SH's senior night. And it is entirely possible that Niagara goes out to Colorado and takes two from Air Force, even though they have clinched the RS title. That could even put second place in play. Too many variables. Grogan is a senior too. I wouldn't make a change now.

Good points Dick. And the Huskies need ot go out and just take the game Friday first and foremost. This team has come a huge way since Christmas. It would be awful to lose it now. I was hoping that SHU would have folded their tents and move on by now. Alas, they seem to have found a bit of life. If they beat Holy Cross tonight really need to watch out.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

HC took care of business tonight with SH. Now if UConn can do the same, twice, they will have a bye. A big if, though. SH pounded HC in Milford last week, so this is by no means a done deal.

There are a ton of possible outcomes this weekend, but bottom line is that if UConn comes out of the week end with 4 points they have locked up a bye. No worse than 4th and maybe as high as 2nd. If they don't there are so many possible outcomes it boggles the mind. Having put themselves in position to control their own destiny, the need to go out and do it!

Amen.

I will be there Friday night. You, Jim?

Look for a guy with a #18 away sweater with Krygier on the back, Jim.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

That was about as STUPID as I have ever seen a hockey team play. And this team will be in Hockey East year after next??? How did these guys get admitted to an institution like UConn?

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

Terrible first and third periods from the Huskies. Made me wonder which team was the one with 2 wins in last place, and which one was the one looking for a first-round bye.

Good news is, a win in B-port tomorrow would still seal one for us.

Re: UCONN Hockey 2012-13: Hockey East Here We Come

A little distressing that Grogan wasn't sharper last night. That makes two home games in a row that he has looked a bit shakey.

Good to hear that Gerling is pretty much OK though. Even if they hold him out tonight, that hit from behind in no man's land just off the boards could have been much more serious.

Well, we'll see. Much of last night was self inflicted. The Huskies were taking liberties with their opponent and not respecting them and paid for that risky behavior. And SHU had much better jump than UConn in their few opportunities when it counted. Especially when they had it in the Huskies end.

Huskies Finish!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't get back to Connecticut until after 7, too late to make the trip to Storrs for the first SHU game. Maybe I'm glad I missed it. Sounded like they just didn't play focused at all. But nice to see they came back and dominated Saturday. Dick, I have to agree with you that it is a bit troubling that they have played sloppy twice in a row at home, but I will say that they seemed to come back the following night very focused and pretty much dominated the games both at Holy Cross then this weekend at Sacred Heart. And did what they needed to do to secure a bye. I don't think they have gone without a win in any weekend since the New Year began. That is a pretty solid performance. Of the 9 series including non-league Penn State, they have 3 sweeps, 2 3-point weekends and 4 splits. That is a pretty solid performance. have to give some credit to Coach Berard for not letting them fall into bad habits or lose focus even when they get beaten. To me the Holy Cross series, where they lost the 1st game at home was an eye opener in that they went to Worcester the next night and jumped on the Crusaders right from the opening faceoff and never let them back into the contest. I think this team could be pretty dangerous in the tourney. They seem to have a level of toughness I haven't seen in a UConn club in a while.
