2013: UMass-A, Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart

2014: Providence, Union, Colgate (UConn opponent in first round)

In 2014 looks like a HE v ECAC tournament. Should be fun.

Yeah, 13-14 should be the last year UConn needs a conference game in the first round to have an "extra" game to play with outside of the tournament strictures (i.e. instead of playing 2 tourney + 5 other OOC, play 1 tourney and 6 OOC; makes it easier to get contracts since we can offer three 2-for weekends. Starting in 14-15, of course, the 22 game HEA schedule will leave us 12 games open.

I wonder, given that 14-15 slate, if they might be considering a showcase format: still pairing with a conference opponent, but scheduling so that the UConn-HEA pair swaps with the other two teams. One could still crown a champion using wins and total goals in that format, but it means we would be guaranteed an actual out-of-league opponent for both games.

Good to see you tonight, KingDobbs, even if you were in a hurry.

Penn State scored 13 seconds into the game and that was it for them. UConn equalized about a minute and twenty seconds later, and we relaxed a bit. Bartus, was hung out to dry on that early goal and in fact for long stretches could have sued his teammates for lack of support. Penn State buzzed around, took a lot of shots, but the UConn D (or should I say Bartus?) was up to the task even as the Grade A's began to pile up. When they did gain control, the Huskies came out of their own zone more crisply than I have seen in a long long time.

It was an entertaining game as both programs are on a similar trajectory, Penn State to B1G (next year) and UConn to HE the year after. Good crowd, some big hits, and had Penn State had big forwards who were willing to take the abuse in the slot, it might have turned out differently. I was struck by the lack of big wind-up slap shots all game long. A couple of one-timers from the points, but that was it.

Outshot by a lot both nights, but got two wins. I saw the Friday night game and it sort of looked like UConn was sleep walking early. But there were lots of shots, many long ones, but I have to think UConn simply plays a style that allows lots of shots and tries to keep keep them outside. Actually your description of Saturday's game could have applied to Friday as well. Except Grogan was the one suing for non-support for a good portion of the contest.

I heard a rumor that UConn is working on bringing BC to Hartford next season. Game to be played at the XL Center as part of the effort to begin marketing UConn Hockey. although BC isn't thrilled by the idea, they have a pretty good alumni network in Connecticut and western Mass, who turn up for games at Yale, for instance, and Hockey East is pushing them too. I thought it was kind of early to be discussing the 13-14 schedule, but I was told it is going to be one of those special events type things, with BC Alumnus/Connecticut Governor Malloy dropping the puck and so forth. Any one else hear this?

There had been a report that Joe Kalisz might be joining the team for the 2nd semester. didn't see him on the roster last weekend. Anyone know anything about that?

Goal scorer and NAHL MVP. Why the heck was he not with the team in the fall semester?

Dick, he doesn't seem to be with the team at all. I read somewhere that he would be coming for 2nd semester, which usually means right after the break. And they could use a goal scorer I think. Haven't heard of him going elsewhere and I haven't heard of him playing in another Jr league anywhere either, so I am curious as to what happened. Is he coming or not?

Wow!! Those two games out in PA sounded really intense. Huskies have to be proud to get half the points away against a team that recently beat the number 5 team in the nation. I was particularly pleased to hear how well they were playing the physical game. That is absolutely necessary for the Huskies to win.

Agreed. I listened to most of the first game and it was intense. Getting a win at Robert Morris was a really hopeful sign, I think. I always say that UConn doesn't really come together until after the break. I think there are a few reasons for that mostly having to do with fitting in a bunch of freshmen/newcomers every year. this year they have been playing very well.

Dick I heard that Kalisz is not coming. He's playing for Linwood in Missouri. They are D2 but I think hockey is a club sport. Don't know what happened there. Sounded like a guy who we could have used.

Lindenwood: just outside St. Louis. Women are varsity, men club; but the facility looks nice, the unis look nice, Head Coach played for the Blues and Ted Sator is an Assistant Coach. Holy cow. Hmmm, plans to go varsity and then D1? Sure looks like a Cadillac program for a club team.

Guessing academic issues prevented Kalisz' D1 eligibilty. He just got to Lindenwood on 1/2.

Wasn't there talk at one time that they would upgrade to play in the CHA when it was undergoing one of its periodic ravelings? Didn't happen at that point but who knows. Plus they are D2 I think so it might be possible to play up and still award scholarships, I htink, although I'm not sure of the play up rules right now.

They were believed to be a possibility at the time, yeah, but those plans were scrapped at the time.

The current rules on playing up are as follows:
1) As per 20.4.1, only schools who played a sport in Division I while having their others in D-II or D-III as of the 2010-11 academic year are eligible to maintain that classification, provided they do not drop the sport in the interim. This applies primarily to Clarkson, Colorado College, Rensselaer, RIT, St. Lawrence and Union in hockey, and about twenty others in various other sports.

2) As per 20.8.2, schools who are classified as Division II which do not have a Division II championship (or a National Collegiate Championship) to compete in may compete in Division I's. This applies primarily to the following men's hockey schools: Bemidji State, MSU-Mankato, St. Cloud, Alaska-Anchorage, Alaska, Northern Michigan, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, AIC, Bentley, Mercyhurst, UAH, Merrimack, UMass-Lowell, Ferris State, Minnesota-Duluth. St. Anselm, Southern New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce, St. Michael's, Stonehill and Assumption are also entitled to do so, but have so far elected not to. Were the Lindenwood men to elevate, they would be allowed to go here.

3) Any sport in which the primary championship is a National Collegiate Championship, and in which the sport does not have a championship for the team's division, is entitled automatically to that. This is where the Lindenwood women fall.

Hmmm ... UConn scored on its first four PP opportunities and looked awesome for awhile against Mercyhurst. Some big hits and a lightning quick forecheck. But just as Dorothy and I got up to go at the end of the second period, UConn coughed up a sloppy 2 on 1 and the score was 4-1. Not to worry. UConn was clearly outclassing the Lakers.

We got home and discovered that the Huskies had not gotten the memo that they Had to play a third period. Yikes, they barely escaped with a 5-4 win.

Well what we did see in the first two periods was an awesome powerplay, an equally good penalty kill, yet a tendency to come thru neutral ice making long cross ice passes in what seemed to us risky situations. Although we weren't there, gotta think Mercyhurst also figured that out in the last period. The Huskies were lucky that a stellar first two periods did not go for naught.

So the question before the house is, can the Huskies bear down, play another physical game, this time for all three periods, and get their team back to 0.500 in the AHA tomorrow night? We shall see.

Some further comments. This UConn team has the potential to be the best in Huskies history. I really like the mix of speed and physical play. They are really starting to come on as evidenced by the really crisp timing and cohesion in what they are doing.

That said, they are still pretty young and they do some sloppy things. In retrospect they were getting tired in the last five minutes of the second period, and I noticed they gave up some PPG's in the third. That kind of thing happens when a team gets tired and imperceptibly gets half a step slow. I can easily imagine that happened last night.

Tonight is a very important game. The Huskies HAVE to get over that 0.500 hump. A win tonight gets them even with a chance to get over the hump next week against AIC. Lose tonight, and the hole becomes deeper again. Every year, UConn spots the rest of the league lots of points early on, comes roaring down the stretch, and falls back just when everything looked so promising. It is up to the senior leadership tonight to make sure that doesn't happen this year.

0-5. Simply not acceptable. And the Huskies wonder why only 600 people come out to watch them.

I opened the Courant this morning and there was an ad for the UConn-QU game tonight which will be broadcast locally by WCCT both over the air and cable. Wow!! That is great.

I think it is a safe bet that UConn will not be opening it up tonight. A tight checking game of the sort that beat Merrimack is what is called for tonight. And high effort for all three (or four) periods.
