Quality win for UConn tonight over Niagara. Means nothing though. Let's see if they have taken it to the next level tomorrow night. Last month they were in the same position against RIT but could not close the deal on the sweep. Let's see if they have taken anything away from that game against UML or whether they will continue to be satisfied with close losses and splits on the weekend. A sweep this weekend would go a long way towards showing their fans that the Huskies are for real this year. As they like to say at UConn football games, "If not now ... then when?"

With Navy I kind of feel like if they wanted a program they would have gotten one already. I mean scholarships are not a concern for the Naval academy. What is really holding them back?

If true, that is not much of a positive development for UConn at all, though impossible to tell without more information. My reckoning has always been that time is on the Huskies' side, i.e. as long as Hockey East was in no rush to find a 12th man, we had the time to get our ducks in a row and make a solid pitch. But this info implies to me that there's a desire to expedite things, even if there's no formal timetable in place, and that harms our candidacy. It becomes less about what we can show, and more about what we can promise, which puts us at a disadvantage compared to a program that has something to show (like RPI).

I was watching the game and he did make that comment. He stated that it wasn't something already set but he would prefer it. I thought about UConn as soon as he said it.

UConn men's hockey could be to UConn men's BB what UConn men's soccer is to UConn FB. A better analogy could not possibly be imagined. Completely complimentary programs.

BUFFALO, NY - In a message to the campus community, University at Buffalo President Satish K. Tripathi today offered his congratulations and best wishes to UB Vice President and Director of Athletics Warde J. Manuel, who has accepted the athletics director position at the University of Connecticut.
A national search will begin immediately for a new athletics director to lead UB’s 20-sport Division of Athletics, Tripathi said.

While it is difficult to bid farewell to such a valued colleague and university citizen, Warde’s selection to lead one of the nation’s top Division I programs reflects the national reputation he has achieved through his outstanding leadership and impressive achievements here at UB.
Since his appointment in July 2005, Warde has served our university and the UB Division of Athletics with distinction, raising UB athletics’ national profile and helping to build a nationally competitive Division I program dedicated to the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence.
Warde’s intense commitment to excellence -- on and off the field -- has been evident across UB men’s and women’s athletics programs. The impressive accomplishments achieved under his watch include the 2008 football team’s Mid-American Conference Championship and first bowl game appearance in UB’s history with the 2009 International Bowl. In 2007, under Warde’s leadership, the UB Athletics Department became the only school in the nation that year to be named a Program of Excellence by the NCAA Division I-A Athletic Directors.

Looks like he was trying to take Buffalo hockey to D-1 before he left.

The University at Buffalo could be returning to a revamped Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Bulls are exploring the possibility of restoring their varsity hockey program, the school confirmed late Friday afternoon.
Buffalo is one five schools involved in discussions with Bowling Green regarding the future of college hockey and possible league affiliation.
The Bulls were a CCHA affiliate for at least the 1973-74 and 1974-75 seasons, competing in Division II with Western Michigan and Lake Forest (Ill). The school was known as the State University of New York at Buffalo at the time.
BG played Buffalo twice each season from 1973-77.
BG and Buffalo are members of the Mid-American Conference in all other sports.
“The University at Buffalo athletic department has been in conversations with established Division I hockey conferences to examine the possibility of returning our hockey program,” Buffalo athletics director Warde Manuel said in a statement.
BG still hasn’t decided on what league it’ll be playing in for the 2013-14 season when all of college hockey’s realignment takes effect. The school has until Oct. 7 to decide if it will join the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
BG received a two-week extension from the WCHA on Thursday in order to continue its talks with Buffalo; and Atlantic Hockey members Canisius, Mercyhurst, Niagara and Robert Morris.
BG is the only CCHA team left for the 2013-14 season.
Buffalo’s program was downgraded from varsity to club status in 1988. The program was playing at the NCAA Division III level when it became a club team.
“While we are flattered to have these discussions, there are several things that would need to occur both fiscally and within conference alignments for this to work for UB at this time,” Manuel said.
But one source said Jeremy Jacobs, owner of the NHL’s Boston Bruins, may be willing to fund all or part of the Bulls’ hockey program.
Jacobs’ other business, Delaware North Companies, is headquartered in Buffalo and he donated $10 million to the school in 2008.
He is a graduate of Buffalo’s school of management, holds an honorary doctorate from the school and has served on a number of leadership boards at the school.
Also, Canisius and the NHL’s Buffalo Sabres are discussing the possibility of building a new arena that also would serve as the Sabres’ practice facility, Canisius’ student newspaper, the Griffin, reported.
Sabres’ owner Terry Pegula already has donated $88 million to Penn State to fund that school’s men’s and women’s hockey programs, and build their new arena.
BG conceivably still join the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, which added Western of the CCHA and WCHA member St. Cloud Thursday.
Notre Dame hasn’t announced its league plans and the school has been linked to the NCHC and Hockey East.
The NCHC’s other members are Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota-Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha and North Dakota.
“I don’t think there’s a set number in our mind right now,” North Dakota athletics director Brian Faison said Thursday when asked about additional NCHC expansion.
He spoke during St. Cloud’s press conference to announce that school’s move.

Bodes well. Both Michigan roots and what he was doing at Buffalo. If UConn in does not get their BB tournament waiver on appeal, however, that could be a fly in the ointment. Assume they have already worked out that contingency though.

I was initially worried that this change would be bad for the hockey team, but as I learned more, and thought more about it, I think it is at worst going to lead to some scholarships. Clearly you don't hire a consultant and do all that stuff knowing the new guy is on the way, without at least having it in mind that you want him to look seriously at the results. And as you say, Michigan roots, and what he was trying to do with hockey at Buffalo, I htink he could well be right on track for something good to happen.
