UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

Re: UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

Nichols getting snubbed as a goalie to watch. IMO, he was as good as there was in Hockeyeast last year.

Actually he was 10th in GAA and 9th in Sv%. While he is a good goalie it's a bit of a stretch to say he was as good as there was, when his rankings were 9 and 10.

Look at the team playing in front of him. They had half of the scholarships and he made them competitive.

If he was very low in the GAA ranking but very high in the Sv% ranking I'd say you had a point... but when you come in 10th of 15 well you weren't "as good as there was." Don't get me wrong, he impressed me when I saw him play but let's not get carried away.

Love to see those numbers through January, excluding February. The kid was as good as there was from October through January, excluding February when his hips gave way and he was injured (team gave up 10 to PC and 9 to NU in February). Hopefully the off season surgery will enable him to carry the load through the entire season this year and his team doesn't run out of gas. I'm not getting carried away in the least bit, your basis for determination is skewed by an injury plagued February.

Re: UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

Think it will take Nichols a bit to get back into form. Do I understand correctly that he had bilateral labrum repair? I have no experience with that surgery although I did have both hips replaced (at UConn) because I was inadvertently skiing off courses in compression turns. The next season I had to re calibrate and re-correlate what the signals to my brain meant. I clicked into my bindings, took one skate step over to the chair loading area and almost fell completely over on my side. My feet and legs were simply not where I thought they were. But it only took a couple days to sort out and it made my skiing technically so much better in the end.

That is similar to what I think will happen in this case although soreness may be in the picture too. Once he gets back to 100% Nichols will be absolutely awesome.

His basis for determination is the stat book, which is how players are measured and compared. How else do you propose we rank players?

Can we pause for a moment to note Patronick is defending JCarter. This is a day I would not have imagined last year.

If you wanted you could do some math... or just look at the HE statistics page and find out what his numbers were.

From Oct through Jan Nichols had :

24GP
2.34GAA
0.929 sv%

Now while these numbers are a marked improvement and although his sv% does move up to 3rd his GAA moves up from 10th all the way to 9th. So back to our original point, he wasn't as good as there was, in fact there were 8 tenders better on a GAA basis and 2 on Sv%. And that's assuming that Nichols was the only goalie that battled injury last year.

Not trying to be a jerk, as I said I think Nichols is a very good goalie, it's just that HE has enough fanboys over in the BU thread s we already at capacity.

Well now you guys in the rest of the league understand what we've been saying all along about Uconn fans. Only a Uconn fan could unite Jcarter and Patronick.

While we're on the topic... Anyone seen Butchy?

It's pre-season for everyone, guys...

Re: UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

Are any of you coming to Huntsville this week?

The question for us is whether another year of D-I talent — certainly not as good as the Huskies' freshmen, but certainly better than the graduated seniors — will see us score something close to 2.5 G/GM. If we get there, we jump up to .500 hockey, and that's pretty good being two years removed from 2-35-1.

As for an on-campus rink: I covered UAH in 2002-03, and I really feel that an on-campus rink will serve your program well. Does it need to be the full-time home? Certainly not. But college hockey is at its best when the students and the die-hards and the regular fixtures are there every game while the face-timers and the empty seats stay out in the parking lot. I'd love an on-campus facility at UAH.

Did anyone get to the game last Saturday? We went to the opera instead. (Have fun, flame away.) Curious about how the Huskies looked.

Home opener tonight. ASU lost to the Q last night by 5-0. Any idea which Huskies team is gonna show up?

The score is 4-0 after two and UConn looks quite sloppy. Letunov unimpressive so far.

Edit: So the Hartford Courant today was raving about Letunov as he had assisted on the two PPG's by Naas. Did not see the second one as we had already left about a minute before, but the one in the first period was quite nice. It happened at the opposite end from where we sat, but one of the Huskies grabbed the puck on the right half boards and did a couple of spin/orbital type moves to maintain control and give himself some space. That started the scoring play. Funny, at the time I did think that was Letunov because those were a smaller man's moves. If that was indeed him, my hat is off for that particular play.

I did think he would play bigger than what he did though. That said, I am sure that a summer of Balis will cure that deficiency unless it is one and done.

I thought they looked like a work in progress. I can definitely see a difference in the overall team speed...and Masonius and Gendron definitely make a difference on the pp from the point. It will be interesting to see how the freshman improve over the course of the season. Letunov and Thompson definitely have offensive skills that haven't really been seen in a UCONN uniform. Ronan is my favorite player...that kid leaves it all out on the ice each and every shift...not that the other kids don't there is just something about him that I like.....he's gritty, and a hustler/extremely hard worker.

Re: UCONN 2015-2016: The Hockey East Journey Continues..the Future Looks Bright

A work in progress is a good way to put it. For some reason for long stretches they seemed to have forgotten how to catch the puck on their stick. And many times when contesting the puck in open ice they overskated their man who proceeded to go the other way with the puck now unimpeded. It just looked early in the season.

But yeah, the talent is certainly a step up. Even the speed. That is easy to see. The future does look bright indeed.
