UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

This Bentley fan enjoyed having you in our conference. Good luck next season and beyond. Frankly, I think it could be a tough transition for your squad, but I'm sure it will be a great move both for UConn and HE in the long run.

Looking forward to having another HE squad to beat up on.
:-P
This Uconn fan wishes the whole Bentley squad which consists of Gensler and Komm (only) the best of luck in the future. Enjoy whatever time is left of this year because Bentley will be back in the crapper next year and the years to come without those two players who made Bentley hockey this year and in the past. It's a toss up what i will miss more your beautiful rat infested home rink in Wataaaartown MA or your prison looking black uniforms ? But im sure it will be a great move for Bentley to be life long partners of the AHA and proud partners of the only D1 rat infested rink in the country.

This result makes one appreciate the job that Berard did last year all the more.

Would really be awful to lose 2 of 3 to such a team and finish behind them in the standings.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Well that escalated pretty quickly.

Good luck to Bentley in the future, I'm sure we'll be seeing you again. Most likely not at the JAR, but another good regional rival. I'm hopeful it doesn't take as long as people think to become competitive. Just having a full year of scholarships to recruit with will make a difference. I don't expect to be world beaters, but could see them slipping into a 6-10 seed area.

Stop living in the past. UConn improved their coaching staff tremendously.

Congrats to the team for putting in the consistent hard work and making this fan proud!

I'll take your newbie instruction under advisement. Fact is, a worse result with a better team. I am sure they are pretty good at recruiting. And the long term will tell the tale. But first steps were disappointing.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

I get what you mean about the season being a disappointment, but I don't agree. Yes they went further last year, and were obviously hot at the right time last year vs cooling this year. I think the league was better as a whole this year. Only one of the top four teams managed to advance to Rochester! One out of the four teams with home ice was able to close the deal. That alone screams how much more parity there was in the league. Last season Sacred Heart, Army, and AIC were guaranteed points. This year all of those teams were improved. Army was much better than their record, evidenced by their run at the end of the year. My other question is, was the team better? Segalla, Nichols, and Norris were all steady contributors. I know Koonas had points, but he is very much a work in progress. Skated well, but made lots of mistakes. Seemed to get lost out there, and not always prepared for the physical play of North American hockey. Gaffney and Skibba were non existenent. Skibba could fly and looked like someone to be excited about early on, but had what 4 points? Disappointment. While I think Segalla was an improvement on Janosz, Koonas was a big step down from Gerke. I don't think the freshmen forwards point totals combined were equal to Ambrosie last year. Not to mention Carriere was a great two way gritty grinder forward.

So in the end I think they missed those seniors more than expected and their losses weren't completely plugged. In the end the team still won more games than last year despite scoring less goals, beat a top 10 for the first time, and even clinched a first round bye still. Not the ending we wanted as fans, not the ending they wanted as a team, but still a lot to be proud of. They were a tough resilient husky team that was hard to break, a great foundation to start building on as we move to Hockey East.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

The roster will definitely be a LOT different next season. With 4 seniors leaving and 8-10 (some places list 8..I have been able to come across 10) incoming freshman the make-up of the roster will be changing significantly. Dick...I think that their performance on the power play became a HUGE issue towards the end of the season. I thought Berard did a good job last season in helping the team over come the issue of Marshall leaving the team during the season...BUT he wasn't the long term solution. Cav will do a good job here and I can't wait to see the design and location of the new arena/facility which should be out soon.

Yes, the tale will be written over the long term. Agree.

Dick, I have to agree with you on that point. Berard did a fine job of turning UConn around. I think Cavanaugh is going to be a good coach but I honestly think Berard would have been a solid choice as well.

In some ways this team seemed more like the 2012 one than last year's model. They were in a great position come the end of January, with games against the weakest part of the league on the docket. And they went out and lost games to Holy Cross, Army and Sacred Heart. Lost the home games in both the HC and Army series. That was hugely disappointing, especially after how well they played in January. And come on, pucks, Army was not very good. Sacred Heart was better than they were last year, but seriously, they weren't that good either. You want to give UConn points for resiliancy, that's fine. But you have to also take away points for losing to weak teams at home. Going into the final 3 weeks I figured a disappointing finish would be 4-2. They went 3-3 and came within a Latta goal with 35 seconds left of finishing with a losing record against the weakest part of the conference.

I agree with your assetment on this years freshman class. And i also agree Berard deserved tons of credit on two fronts. One for the job he did last year and second for recruiting Segalla to UConn. Having said that i think Cavanaugh was the right hire for this university and hockey program.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Well, that's a wrap on the retrospection. On to the XL center and Hockey East. UConn can't get an on-campus venue constructed soon enough for me and I suspect for most of us. But maybe a few nice pregame dinners downtown and a drink or two afterward will convince us otherwise. It might be interesting to get all of us passionate fans together at a bar downtown after the first XL game. That would surely be a new experience for UConn hockey fans for sure. Food (or drink) for thought?

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

I'm game...just put my deposit on season tickets today. I'm looking forward to next season. Making games at the XL Center is a little easier than going to Freitas for me coming from Port Chester NY. Just so you guys also know I contacted Kyle Muncy of Twitter about jerseys. He said that they will be available for inaugural season in Hockey East. The Boneyard also has a hockey only forum now too.
Here is the link for 2014-2015 season ticket deposit info: http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/031814aaa.html

Sounds great. But we are going to enforce proper terminology going forward. Sweaters, please! ;)

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Over on the boneyard someone had posted a link to a supposed campus map with the new rink location. I'm not a boneyard member so I couldn't see it. Anybody hear any new rumors on where, what, and when? I assume the coaches need to have some sort of information to pitch to recruits by now. Can't be easy to sell a kid on coming here when even your home games will be road games at xl.

There is a picture of an "artist's rendering" of the new building which was posted and displayed at the final home game. But its pretty generic in the sense that it looks like a hockey arena at a major hockey school, just with UConn colors and the Husky (old version!) at Center ice. According to what's posted there which I assume is generally accurate, there hasn't really been a location selected yet. the siting study is currently underway. Options under consideration are, roughly, the current Freitas location, which would entail relocating the Morrone Stadium to the current football practice field and the current practice field to what is the north end of the soccer facility. Another option is to construct the new barn near where the new student rec center is planned in the area of the current X Lot

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

The soccer stadium/football practice field swap should be done soon...especially if Diaco asks for it. I have heard from sports editor of Daily Campus via twitter that the X lot location is seriously being considered. You should be able to access the boneyard if you are not a member similar to this site.

Didn't they tear down the old football stands? If so, that means they will have to build new doesn't it?

Edit: Oh, you are talking about the current FB practice field.
