UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Kind of a blah weekend, but can't be discouraged. Not sure how I feel about tomorrow nights tilt. The AHA season is so tight, I feel like this game is almost a waste. Or terrible timing.

Reasons to be encouraged? The two recruits UConn just plucked from Minnesota. Coach Cav has had his share of 5'7 dynamo's, and it appears he has landed another. You can't teach speed, and from recent reports, these two have a ton of it. We'll see, but encouraging nonetheless.
I agree with you. blah weekend. Started well. On the other hand, the Huskies played the top of the conference, all but 1 game on the road and came out 2-2-2. Throw in AIC and they went 4-2-2 with 6 of 8 on the road. That isn't a terrible performance.

I also agree that this game is sort of strange timing falling in the middle of the conference's final stretch. If UConn was mired in 9th it probably wouldn't matter but in the race as we are, it is a tough game to face.

One last point on recruits, and this is related to the current club, you can really see that Segalla is a really top quality player. He knows where to be and what to do and he makes things happen. if the others are close, we are heading in a good direction.

Congrats, you Huskies. Big win tonight for your team, and for the AHA!

Appears that your senior goalie stepped up big time.

Such a big win. Yes, the shots indicate that Grogan stole this one, and maybe he did in some eyes, but I thought this was an entire team win. They probably blocked 15 to 20 shots, they took hits to make a play, they worked hard on the puck and they made their own breaks. Say what you want about this team, but they work their tails off and they were rewarded with a huge win tonight.

When was the last time UConn beat the #9 team in the country?

Forget what I said about the bad timing of this game, (although it was still kind of stupid), let's hope this win propels UConn Hockey to finish the AHA season strong.

I thought PC hit Grogan in the chest a ton and the UConn did a fantastic job at blocking shots and making sure Grogan was able to see shots while PC couldn't get the key rebounds.

Grogan has been in a bit of a funk of late, but I think its over now. This was a terrific win for the Huskies. I hope it gives them momentum heading into the final few weeks.

I agree with you on Segalla my question is will he be at UConn for his four full years ? Also who recruited him was it Berard or Cavanaugh ?

On the first question I have no idea. I'd guess he'll be here at least 2 more years. On the second if memory serves he was first identified by Berard, but Cav closed the deal and it was Cav who decided to bring him in this season. He was originally scheduled to play in the USHL or somewhere this year.

Nicely done. Now focus focus focus. These next games count. That one didn't.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Hopefully they can get a big crowd tomorrow night for the home stretch! I saw an ad for a "white out" tomorrow. Hopefully they do it right this time and pass out white hockey shirts to the spectators, unlike the failed attempt at a blue out earlier in the year.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Well that stunk. Completely flat second period, thought Cav summed it up perfectly. If these kids could just come out with the same intensity and string it together for a bit they could do real damage. Instead they seem to just sleepwalk through a period every other game or so. Frustrating to watch.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

That was a bit more like it.

Didn't get to last night's game in Storrs. Looked from the box score that they had no jump. I suppose the Wed-Fri game schedule could be used as an excuse ... if one were looking for an excuse. Unfortunately, no one was. There is no crying in baseball.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Hopefully the seniors have the younger kids fired up for the last two weeks, including their final regular season home game. Figure Grogan will have to get the start Friday, but it'll be interesting to see how it plays out the rest of the way. Do you really want to keep going every other night in the playoffs?

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

I think this team still has focus problems and they are not on the ice so much as off the ice. There are things you do to get ready for the next game and things you don't do. Some teams never learn that while other teams have so much talent they can get away without ever learning that lesson. The Huskies do not fall into the latter category.

To this I would say, what are your assumptions about off the ice? Explain the cryptic post.

Re: UConn 2013-2014: Let the Cavanaugh Era Begin

Last Friday was extremely disappointing. The Huskies gave away any margin for error they might have had and pretty much gave away any hope of finishing the regular season on top. Now they have to play well over the final 2 weeks just to insure home ice and a 1st round bye. I thought Cav's comments were right on target, and I think this team is struggling a bit with expectations. They need to focus and win Friday, and move on from there.
