UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

Re: UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

WHUS did a nice broadcast of the game last nice and the announcers were thrilled beyond description with the OT win. I'm gonna be a little less charitable here.

Canisius completely outplayed UConn last night and if it wasn't for Garrett Bartus, it would have been ugly. It is easy to see how UConn collapsed at the end of the regular season. They simply are not tough enough and their work rate in their own end was atrocious. Lackadaisical and excruciatingly slow to turn the puck up ice would be a good way to describe it. On Canisius' second goal the UConn D tracked down the puck on the back dasher before the first Canisius forechecker had even crossed the blue line on a dump-in. What followed was a desultory back and forth between the D and before you knew it the Canisius forecheck was having its way with the Huskies. The puck ended up in back of the net.

What is more troubling is the Huskies inability to deliver meaningful hits. They appear to be a bunch of poke-check maestros who let they eyes wander to the ice instead of staying up on their man and forgetting to keep their feet moving as they drive through the hit. The result was a lot of near misses and some needless penalties. Coupled with the tendency to be a step slow in their own end, Canisius pretty much showed the Huskies who their Daddy was. By halfway through the game we were headed back home to get some sleep (having spent a long day at Berkshire East).

To be sure, not all was bad. Had to like the UConn powerplay. I think this is the most skilled Huskies team I have seen in putting one-timer bullets on the net. I was even reminded of Ryan Equale back in the day who used to break in over the blue line, wind up and crank one from the top of the circle beating an unscreened goaltender one-on-one with heaviness of shot and accuracy. And I liked the way they moved the puck through neutral ice and cycled it down low in the O-zone.

Hoping for a better game tonight although everyone has to be tired. Time to bear down and close it out.

Well done, Huskies!!!!! Wish I coulda been there. Listened to the third period on WHUS though. A very nice broadcast.

Re: UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

Great gutsy OT win firday nigth, outplayed for portions of the game but just refusing to lose. Came out and took care of business Saturday night, never really gave Canisus a sniff. Looks like they may be getting back on track. Hopefully their late season swoon doesn't come back to bite them now that they have to travel next weekend. Great way to close out the season at home though.

Re: UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

Well, it will be interesting to see how much the Huskies want to go to the NCAA's. This is by far the best UConn team since year 2000 when the Huskies won the MAAC tournament and there was no NCAA bid involved.

Regardless of who wins tonight, there is absolutely no reason -- whatsoever -- that UConn should not be able to go to any of the possible venues and impose themselves on their opponent. Yeah, it is tough playing in Colorado at altitude against an acclimated Air Force team, and it might take them three games, but even there the Huskies are talented enough to win. IF they play with intensity and a physical focus. They are just that good.

Re: UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

I joked with a former poster (zack) that Lowell and uconn would have the rubber match in the NCAAs. Still aways to go for uconn... But we'll see.

Re: UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

Be tough tough tough tonight, Huskies!!! Grind it out and then capitalize on whatever opportunities that materialize. Tough to do that in the second game of the weekend, but you guys can do it!!

Re: UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

Congrats to the Huskies on their playoff run!! Your fans are tremendously proud. We could not have asked for anything more. Very best regards to the seniors and thanks for their effort.

Re: UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

UConn can be proud that it came the closest to knocking off Air Force in the post season to date and they did it out in Colorado. If they had not had their end of season collapse they would have most probably played Air Force for the title and the NCAA berth tonight in Rochester and who knows what would have happened.

Re: UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

Frustrating to see their end of the season collapse bite them in the butt like that. Mark of a young team, playing up and down to team's levels. But your right they have nothing to hang their heads about after their performance in Air Force. To think Air Force dominated the championship weekend, and UConn blew two leads in each game that they lost out there. Not only were they within striking distance of upsetting them in three, they could of potentially swept. Hopefully it serves as another reminder of how slim the margin for error is and how close they are to doing something special. Have to plug the hole Cole Schneider leaves behind though, not going to be easy. Also how does Alex Gerke not get on the all atlantic first team? More points than Kirby and Mathis, I understand Air Force won the league but that's a joke.

So ... the Team kept their part of the bargain. When are we gonna see that report???

Inquiring minds would like to know!

Do you guys think that HE is a possibilty? Would love to see you be our 12th team:confused:

Would require an upgrade to rink and the schollies but feel you guys and the HE would be a great fit plus my nephew skates for you guys and would love to see him and the Huskies at the Alfond again;)

Re: UCONN 2011-12 Men's Hockey Thread

It seems obvious that UConn would be an excellent fit. Although the new AD is still probably getting his feet wet, we are all hoping for a favorable announcement a couple weeks after the Frozen Four.
