UAH Hockey 2019-20

Re: UAH Hockey 2019-20

Show Place Arena, Upper Marlboro, MD

LOL, the "criminally" reference made me think you were referring to Lorton. Anyway, SPA was a nothingburger hockey-wise right from the git-go. A brief fling with an ECHL franchise IIRC but that's all. Location in Upper Marlboro is nowhere near any of the areas where youth hockey has always had a presence.

Reiterating that Navy D1 hockey could succeed if the rumored initiative isn't once again drydocked.

... The Washington Capitals are wildly popular in the Greater DC area and high school hockey is flourishing in the area. ...
Chicagoland has had the same boom in youth hockey thanks to the popularity of the Blackhawks.

Unfortunately, Northwestern, Illinois, and even Northern Illinois have been more interested in making fart noises instead of starting a D1 program during the last decade.

The one I’m surprised at is Illinois State. They have a good football program for the FCS. But they don’t exist in most of Chicago’s mind. There is a 7,000 seat hockey arena down the street. Low level pro teams have failed, but it’s a college town. With the arena already there, it’s a lower up front investment. They could’ve been the only D1 hockey school in the state (depending on U of I). Oh well. Not gonna happen.

Well, Peoria has had the Rivermen in one form or another just 40 minutes up the road, so it's not like ISU would have been the only game in town. I don't think hockey would work there...

He’s talking about Bloomington which is the definition of a pro (and now USHL) graveyard. ISU’s club team plays in Grossinger Motors Arena where a FPHL team might play this fall (they still haven’t announced a name or logo so it might be DOA).

Hard to believe its been almost a quarter-century since UIC played its last game.

Glad to see UAH finally signing some recruits. These look like pretty solid guys and about as good as we can hope for at this point. Scoville is another huge defenseman. With he and Ayo we have a couple of oak trees on the blue line to go with our smaller puck-movers (the ones still around). Hope they can skate at the D1 level.

Rest in peace Bill. He was the original Von Braun Bully.

"Original Charger Bill Roberts dies: Bill Roberts, who played on the first UAH hockey club teams from 1979-82, passed away on June 6. He was 61.

Roberts, also known as “Big Bad Bill from Billy Goat Hill,” was the Chargers’ leading scorer in the inaugural 1979-80 season, scoring 70 points on 30 goals and 40 assists in 20 games. He had 88 goals and 138 assist for 226 points in three seasons, helping UAH win its first U.S. national club championship in 1982.

A graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 12th, at Maple Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Friends of UAH Hockey, c/o Bryant Bank, 320 Pelham Ave., SW, Suite 100, Huntsville AL 35801-5051."

Sure isn't looking good for UAH, even for next season which is a shame.

Next season should happen — the main issue would be COVID-related in terms of whether we actually play the game. The concern is, of course, about the longer term.

The next big community push is to get Season Tickets sold. The school and the alumni are working the conference angle. The two are symbiotic.
