UAH Hockey 2016-17

Re: UAH Hockey 2016-17

I was pleasantly surprised at how few penalties seemed to be called in this first game - particularly given how many seem to have been called in the exhibition games on Saturday. That's different from last year.

Are the Mudbugs now a junior team? We watched them in Louisiana when I was there 6 years ago, and they were pro then. Anyway, congrats on the win - impressive start!

The Bugs are now in the NAHL. Former Coach Scott Muscutt is heading the hockey ops side. They have also moved into a renovated Coliseum on the fairgrounds in Shreveport, their original rink.

Re: UAH Hockey 2016-17

I am really tired of watching this team get its *** kicked. The last winning season for UAH was 2005-06, when Scott Munroe was just lights out all year and five players with 20+ points (Mulherin, Nimmo, Schreiber, McConnachie, Arvai) and a sixth at 19 (Martini). Moreover, only two Chargers who played a majority of the team's games (Winchester, Montes) failed to score a goal, and Winchester racked up 13 assists.

That 2005-06 team was one the last UAH squad in D-I to-date to actually out-score their opponents on average per game by a whopping 0.06 goals. The others: 2000-01 [+0.82], 2002-03 [+0.40], and 2004-05 [+0.84].

This team is scoring less than two goals a game and giving up a little over four. You could handle that if the goals weren't just flying into the back of the net with great regularity. Where is the Matt Larose that we saw last year? At least Jordan Uhelski is playing well, but the chances are that he's not up to playing the next six games (or probably even four of the six) since he's seen no action before now. Even then, bringing in Carmine Guerriero isn't a guaranteed cure. This team has to get it down to 3-3.5 GA/GM and cut down on the blowouts that kill confidence. If you can do that and get the GF/GM to something close to 2.5 or above, you stand a puncher's chance of making the playoffs and then just trying to make a run.

The offense is slowly coming together. Max is Max; Larson and Salerno look like they're going to do decently at this level. Kestner will start putting some of those shots through. Saulnier still has to figure out a way to stay on the ice so he can use his hands for good. But the boys look like they might get two lines that are capable of putting one in most every night.

Sometimes I feel like it's never going to come together. Maybe eight games is too few to determine that, but I expect that SCSU will out-class us this weekend, too.

Feeling the same way. This weekend at St. Cloud won't help, but if we don't turn it around at Anchorage and at home vs. Fairbanks (when Guerriero should be back), then, well, ugh.

Re: UAH Hockey 2016-17

We were there last weekend, and the generally looked pretty good...with some glaring moments.
We had a great time and our UAH freshman spawn of Stratus had a great time too. So there's that.
Maybe they'll pull a split with SCSU this weekend... It could happen.

Re: UAH Hockey 2016-17

They need to come back from Anchorage with three points or show up on their shields.

What's the deal with Jetlan Houcher and Tyler Poulsen? They've played in a combined 5 games...With some of the better junior pedigrees coming into school and decent seasons last year I figured both would factor into the team's plans this year.

I think that playing on the road a lot factors into it. It's harder to speculate on guys who haven't historically given you a solid two-game effort and slot them onto a road roster. The flip side of this is why you'll probably see Brandon Carlson on every road trip: as someone who can competently play F or D, he gives you flexibility.

What's wrong with Guerriero? Has he been injured, and if so is this the reason the team started off red hot but are on a losing streak? I hate to see star goalies injured ... it sucks.

Carmine played 12 games over the age of 21 in his final season in the CCHL, so he's out for the first 12 games of this season. UAH was very up-front with the situation and was lucky to get the waiver. Thank God he didn't play in the WHL when he was 16.
