UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

It's good to see the work and the coaching pay off. I've gone from expecting to lose to expecting to win (although I really only have hope this weekend at Houghton).

I certainly expect nothing in Houghton, or against any of the top teams in the league (in this season's case, Mankato, Tech, or BG) until we actually start taking points from them. We're getting closer, of course, but I feel we still need a perfect game against those guys to do it.

Carmine would have to stand on his head, Saulnier would need to stay out of the box and get a good feed on a puck to one of his wings (like that drop he did for Carps), and McHugh's line needs to get something, too.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Chargers shut out in three straight road games. Our road scoring drought is now 199:38, longest in program history. Blargle. That is all.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Over The Boards is reporting that Joey Marooney has decommited from UAH.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Awful news about Marooney. Anyone have the inside scoop as to why it happened? Statman, Geof?

I don't ... Geof might soon.

I'm still staggered by tonight's result. That effort undermined every stride we've made this season. Embarrassing.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

It wasn't pretty before the end of the second by any stretch of the imagination, but the spearing ****ed the Huskies off. They showed it with the scoreboard.

Embarrassing action led to embarrassing result. Can't say I blame them. UGH.

I can't say that I expected THAT result. I'm glad they are starting to show a killer instinct, but I didn't expect it against you guys.

Like I said, that spear seemed to give them extra motivation.
Thanks, but no thanks? If that makes any sense.
Sorry you guys took it on the chin like that.

I didn't expect this weekends results for sure, you guys definitely gave us 2 good games in Huntsville so this was unexpected. I think Houghton is hard on you guys or something. Anyway, as Tech fans we know how this feels for sure.

Must be. The four games in Houghton the last two seasons have been 4-1, 10-4, 5-0, and 11-1. I'm kind of glad we don't go up there next season. ;)

Wow. I didn't watch the game tonight (personal commitment), but ... wow.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

UAH had allowed 23 PPG all year before last night, when they allowed six. Their season PK% went from 84% to 81%. What was a comfortable lead in combined special teams is now nearly gone.

I'm going back to bed.

Did your team make it back safely thru the storm?

I haven't seen anything to indicate otherwise. They've all laid low after that embarrassment.

I'll find out about the JMarooney situation this week, but I probably won't be able to say anything.

Permit me to state the obvious. Big series this coming weekend in Sault Ste. Marie. The Chargers have had that weekend off to ponder the spanking they received from Michigan Tech. How will UAH play after that debacle?

On the other side, LSSU returns from a winless road/air trip to Alaska. Tired? Demoralized? Playing at home.

I have no idea how this series will go.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Well, here's my take:

1. UAH has not played very well on the road this year (and are winless on the road in 2015), with just two road wins and only one in conference.
2. As cpp notes, LSSU is coming back from a trip to Fairbanks, and that's tough, because you have to go from the interior to Anchorage and then to the Lower 48, which apparently adds a couple of hours and is, well, another travel headache. I have no idea whether they fly into MSP or DTW — I'd guess DTW — but doing those three flights and then the bus is a hard trip.
3. It's a minor legend that Defiel got new contact lenses over the holiday break and has been lights out since. Well, we all know that goalies don't score and can't, as such, win you games, but they can steal them. Sure, Defiel shut out UAH 1-0 in November, but UAH looked like crap that game during one player taking two majors in the same game. Defiel looked awful the next night.
4. If you want to talk about resilience, let's consider this:
a. UAH bounced back just fine from a butt-kicking in Bemidji to handle Northern reasonably well.
b. UAH has bounced back from really tough losses this year, tying NMU after a terrible series in Mankato (including a 41-9 SOG disparity in the Saturday game), the whole Omaha series, and the Alaska OT game after a tough series against Tech at home.
c. The Chargers have had only one truly dreadful two-weekend stretch (BG at home and Mankato on the road — early for a young team and against two of the top three teams in the league), and the only other multi-game stretch of terror is the Ferris-Tech-Tech series.

The Chargers have to split and really could use a sweep. UAH won't be idle the rest of the season (vFSU, vUAF, @BGSU), while the Lakers will next weekend. You can figure that Tech is going to handle the Seawolves another pair of losses this weekend, so getting at least two points from the Lakers puts the Chargers four clear with six to play, and what a six: @BSU, vBGSU, vUAF.

Two wins this weekend puts UAH a lot closer to a playoff trip. They'd be 8-12-0, a mark that could tie Ferris if their woes against the league's elite continue. (They're winless in six straight against MSU and BGSU, with the final two BGSU games this weekend.) At that point, they have the chance to really make a move.

I think that I concocted a way for UAH to make it to 5th. But all of that starts with wins this weekend. I don't expect a sweep on the road, but I sure want it, and I expect a split.
