UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

Tuscaloosa has no permanent ice at all from what I can tell. UAT would have to build a facility from scratch or somehow put a sheet in Coleman Coliseum.

I'm sure that's why everyone's said that it would have to be a Penn State-sized gift. I just can't see where a well-heeled Tide athletics booster would give that much money to start a hockey program when they can make a huge difference with the football program — especially when you consider that Division I may soon allow football and basketball players to be compensated above and beyond the current level.

Congrats to Cam Talbot for resigning a 1 year deal with the Rangers for almost 3x the money. He has deserved much more than they were paying him. Looking forward to January visit from your team.

I had a discussion with Keith Rowe ('05) at the last home series (we were in line for beer). We talked about whether Cam would take the money and go be a starter or re-up and stay with NYR. I think that he did the best thing for his career, as this gets him more money but allows him to leave after next season. He had a rough start to the season, so it makes sense to round back into the success of last season before trying to get a multi-year deal in some town that needs a goalie.

Merry Christmas, Millsy, and to you a healthy 2015!

I would selfishly like to see Cam in Nashville. I don't have a Pekka Rinne voodoo doll, though.

After tonight's game here in Omaha, on the post game radio show (I could not go to the game, I am sicker than a dog right now), UNO's color man, Terry Leahy, said definitively that the University of Alabama is looking at adding D-1 hockey.

Correct me if I am wrong, but, haven't you pretty much said that this isn't very likely? I know there has been discourse by you somewhere else in greater detail than this but I wasn't able to locate it (after not looking all that hard).

If this were true, I'd think it'd be all over this forum and even such a rumor would already have a thread.

My guess is that Terry doesn't know what the hell he's talking about?

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

1. I don't have any insight into the UAT setup.
2. Their club people have been pretty vocal that there's not a push for varsity hockey.
3. Michael addressed many concerns with "What if BAMA went varsity?"
4. I just don't see where it makes sense. I don't think that there's even a sheet in Tuscaloosa. The Frozen Tide play games in Birmingham and once or twice up here (usually a tournament). Birmingham is a good hour away.
5. I just don't see where a booster says, "You know what we're missing in Tuscaloosa? Men's ice hockey. Does Auburn have it? No. Do any other SEC schools have it? No. There's the little sister that we hate upstate, but ... okay." And that donation also has to cover Title IX.

If I find time over the break, I'll write my concerns up and publish them.

So disappointed in the penalties we took in the 3rd period tonight. Can't finish games when you play conservative and take bad penalties, Vanderlugt took a terrible penalty which cost us.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

I'm wondering with 33 seconds left and the lead, who won that face-off.?

UNO did.

Tough game for UAH fan, I am sure. Appalling performance by UNO--until the 3rd period.

Played in front of one of the 5 smallest crowds (3,923) in program history. Zero atmosphere to this one.

Notable attendees at the game included Minnesota Assistant Head Coach Mike Guentzel and UNO grads and playing-minor-league-hockey Josh Archibald and Micheal Young.

A shootout was conducted after overtime (for the fans, presumably, since it has no bearing on anything) which UNO won. UAH did not score in the shootout at all making Massa perfect in shootouts this season. No goals allowed.

Granted, UAH had zero experience with shootouts. In fact, I can't remember our last penalty shot. ;)

UNO playing better + UAH penalties = I'm surprised the Mavericks didn't up and win the game. Oh well -- something the Chargers need to learn is finishing.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

I'm expecting points vs. Anchorage. UAA's offense and defense isn't much better than ours, and the Seawolves have been taking more penalties than we have. I like Guerriero and our special teams at home.

Re: UAH Hockey 2014-15: The 30th Varsity Season

I want it tomorrow night. They need to come out of the break like a stampede. If they win on Friday, they can win on Saturday. Goodness, it's been five years since we swept anyone at home (Niagara 2010-01-29 & 30). It is time. Also, has Lake turned the corner with their tournament win last weekend?

Hmm...not sure. A scoreless tie with Cornell? And one of Lake's goals against Notre Dame was an "own" goal. Defiel is playing well, and good on them for winning that tournament, but I wouldn't really call it turning the corner.
