UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

So the CCHA would be ok as long as 6 members stick together in 2013-14 & 2014-15?

That would be my reading.

There's a two year grace period that goes into effect once the league drops below six. As long as it maintains at least five members during that grace period, it keeps the bid. If it has six teams with the two year continuity of membership, the bid stays.

Does anyone else find it ironic that Niagara and RoMo will probably play key roles in deciding whether or not the AHA FOUR join with the CCHA THREE, aka the leftovers? When the CHA was going down the tubes, the fans from these schools pretty much all said "we like our league the way it is... just go to the AHA if they will have you."

FWIW, one of my posts on the CCHA thread was favorable to UAH as a member rather than UAF.

> A 2-3 hour trip with a one-hour time change to Alabamastan in the deep south in mid-winter beats the he11 out of a 14-18 hour trip with two stopovers* and a four-hour time change to cold AK. *if the team could even fly commercial

So tell me that you're in the AD's ear. I mean, we all know you want to see NU and UAH back in a conference together. You can say it. ;)

Yeah, I miss hating on you guys :D

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Has anybody heard a word from UAH Athletic Director lately re possibility of UAH joining a conference?

Looks like the Chargers will have a light roster again this year - according to web site 10 coming in. Previous posters mentioned 6 seniors graduated and 3 rising sophomores and one rising junior not returning?

No. There was no indication that UAH was in any way involved with the recent talks between CCHA and Atlantic Hockey schools. I count this as a bad thing and I wonder if the impetus for such a conspicuous absence comes from the AD himself or from the (interim) President/Chancellor.

Either way it ****es me right off.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Mike, I am not sure UAH had any say in attending ... unless they crashed the meeting, this was pretty much one group (certain AHA school representatives) meeting with another group (CCHA conference representatives). There were enough issues to discuss and work through on an exploratory basis without UAH at the table bringing a whole other set of issues that would have bogged things down. Need to let the two groups find some ground to move forward on. They know UAH is out there and interested.

The CCHA for certain needs to get those four on board. Depending on how things shake out, they could have but two members left.

As it turns out, those four teams have a current conference who might want to be kept in the loop about what is happening, and the four also have something of a vested interest in acting collectively.

Neither of these two elements is a factor when concerned with UAH's status. The CCHA needs more than one team, and they don't need to discuss UAH's candidacy with anyone but UAH.

(Insert-city-name-here) simply likes a winner. The (Insert-team-nickname-here) pack the place when they are a competitive, winning team ... when they are losing, forget it.
Congratulations... You've just described nearly every pro sports town in existence (with rare notable exceptions such as the Chicago Cubs).

I'm wondering if this is more a shot across the bow of the other AHA teams to vote in increased scholarship limits. They were only 1 vote away from passing last year and it would only take one school worried about losing a quarter of the conference to get it through this time.

I wish I could concur on it being a shot across the bow but considering that the vote was to increase only from 12 to 13 scholies, I find it a stretch to think it is a strong-arm strategy to get to 18.

I've got no doubt in my mind that the issue will come up the next time the AHA ADs meet. I think that would've happened independent of the CCHA putting out feelers, though.

I've said before, but it will come down to whether the AHA wants to go full scholarship; apart from that, the difference between a reformed CCHA and the AHA is minimal.

The plan of action is pretty much guaranteed to always go:
1) The CCHA talks to the AHA Four about helping them out.
2) The AHA Four go back to the AHA Core and says "So, check it, you willing to up the limit for us?"
3a) The AHA Core says no, and the AHA Four says "Smell ya later."
3b) The AHA Core says sure, and the AHA Four says "Well, now we've got a hard decision."

The AHA isn't going to 18 though regardless...so its a choice between staying and upping to 13 or 14 or leaving and getting 18 plus playing teams with some history...

I'm not sure history really matters at this time.

Re: UAH Hockey 2011-12: Will Someone Break the Conference Logjam? Thanks.

Well they certainly are higher profile than most of the 8 teams not looking to change leagues...

Well that may be true but as you know recent events show that history does not matter as much.

You skipped the step (anywhere in the sequence would be appropriate) where the AHA core says "Hey Canisius: Just leave, please. We're calling your bluff. Good luck getting funding for that arena you still don't have! Hah!"

I think it's: "12 scholarships, Five non-conference games, 1 auto-bid for 12 teams" versus "18 scholarships, six non-conference games (could be more if they lessen league games), and 1 auto-bid for seven or eight teams."

Robert Morris wants 18 scholies. End of story. We all know Niagara does, too. Mercyhurst wants the Men's team to get somewhere close to a level that the 'Hurst Women are at. Canisius... well... ummm... I don't know.

My gut says this happens for the RMU, NU, and Mercyhurst for sure. Canisius is probably a 60/40 at this point. UAH getting an invite will all depend on what the four wild cards (WMU, ND, LSSU, and UA_) all end up doing. If two or more of those move, UAH probably gets in. They stay adrift if the 'new' CCHA is sitting with 8 teams after all this shakes out.
