UAA Hockey Offseason

I'm really curious why, he was saying the right things, and mentioned that the sky was not falling due to wins and losses...New arena plans are still going forward though in the architecture process, 35% wanted soon...Who are they gonna bring in to do a better job as head coach? We are soo remote you need a local that understands Alaska and can help the assistants recruit, I am beyond baffled, hopefully he quit and was not fired.

I think its time to take a look at our coaching staff during this upcoming offseason. I have no ill-intentions towards coach Shasby, but with the current record being 3-18-1 (and overall 32-77-9), he really doesn't have me excited about the future.

I like that Shasby grew up in Alaska, played for UAA, and has experience with the local high schools. However, his lack of ability to recruit, rally his players, and ultimately win games is frustrating.

Moreover, Fairbanks has their coach, Erik Largen (currently 7-14-2, overall 100-96-23), signed through 2028.
Should’ve put money on it back in January…

Trupp has to be on the short list, I went to middle school through college with with his brother Hayden, darn tooting I'm getting old. I'm still shooting for a goalie coach, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Same darn sentiments for the past 20 years, I've had.

“Fans will hear more about the effort to build a new hockey arena later this off-season. Next steps include working with the university to:

  • bring the construction plans to 35% completion,
  • develop the new arena business plan, and
  • develop the new arena revenue plan.
The plans will be submitted to the University of Alaska Board of Regents for formal project approval.”

What exactly does “bring the construction plans to 35% completion” mean? They have renderings, an idea of where it will be, and a firm they are working with. If the remaining 65% is asking the board of regents for $60 million to build it than just say that.

I would hope they do a national search for a new coach. An Eric Lang-type guy would do well here I suspect.

Alaska Anchorage picks up Connor Brown. Brown was on the 2025 National Champion Western Michigan Broncos, although he did not see the ice at all during that season. This year he played for the Tri City Storm in the USHL and has 19 pts over 60 games.

Shasby leaving also means that UAA players can enter the portal before the April 13 opening date.

I've worked with one engineering firm that worked primarily with architects, there are steps in the design process. Though over there it was 30, 75, and 90 % all before final approval at 100%. This is by no means a guarantee that a new arena is green lit, the process is just beginning after some low level renderings. Even if it was green light I wouldn't fathom an opening day until after 2030.

I'm more concerned after Maryville was announced there is still no conference being formed, having our head coach quit does not signal any confidence in our program, what the hell is going on.?

From what I have read, the independents are waiting to hear from Atlantic Hockey on if they would consider adding more teams. Here is a snippet from the interview with AHA commissioner Michelle Morgan following Mercyhurst's news.

CHN: Will you look to bring another team in, is the obvious question?

Morgan: Yeah, I'm smirking because I think I've heard from almost every independent (team) possible today. As soon as the news came out, they were emailing, calling, texting from all angles, and understandably so. I know that we have a board meeting here in the next week or two. And this certainly will be a big topic, you know? I think in the short term, we have to look at things like schedule and potentially, does that include what the composition of our league is, I think anything's on the table. It's certainly not ideal to have these conversations in this frequency. And so I know there's some work ahead of me in terms of what next steps look like, but it's my job as commissioner to be prepared and present the options to the board too, so that they can ultimately decide.
