Twin Cities Maternity Hospital Recommendation

A friend of ours is pregnant and may be relocating to the Twin Cities in Minnesota.

Any of you Minnesotans have any recommendations on a maternity hospital we can pass along to her? Details appreciated.

Re: Twin Cities Maternity Hospital Recommendation

I'd suggest Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, if she lives in Minneapolis proper or one of the inner 'burbs. I know a few people who had good experiences there, especially with difficult pregnancies. However, your friend may want to see if her current Ob-Gyn can refer her to someone around MSP. Maybe Angie's List?

Re: Twin Cities Maternity Hospital Recommendation

So much depends on where she locates. There are several good birthing centers to recommend. On the east side, Woodwinds is outstanding. Childrens' as mentioned. Methodist in St. Louis Park is also good. I'd avoid the Fairview system in general. If it's a problem delivery (premmie), the Hennepin County Medical Center has a super NICU, as does Childrens'. You want to pick one close to where you live/work for short travel time when the time comes. Feel free to e-mail me if you find out where she locates, I know a number of people who know about this (including the head of the HCMC NICU).

Doesn't the OB's privileges (or whatever they're called) have a lot to do with which hospital? I would go doctor shopping and the hospital question should answer itself or at least narrow down the possibilities.

I like Fairview. Fairview University has been very good to me. I don't really like Health East though. That would be St. John's, St. Joe's, Woodwinds, and Bethesda Rehab Center. But I know people who like them too. Is the hospital open in Maple Grove yet? I don't know the name of it....

I think it matters more where your doctor delivers babies at though.

Re: Twin Cities Maternity Hospital Recommendation

We had an amazing experience at St. Joseph's in St. Paul this morning. My wife's water broke today at 3am at 34 weeks, 5 days and we had a great, natural birth (wanted to do waterbirth, but can't until 37 weeks).

Introducing Ingrid. 5 lbs, 18 1/4" long. My wife was in only in labor for 3.5 hours, but our midwife made it just in time for the birth to be perfect.

She won't come home until the end of the week at the earliest, but St. Joe's has a fantastic maternity care practice.

Congrats Nathan!! :D

I don't know anything about maternity stuff, but as far as hospitals go, my family and I go to Mayo and only Mayo. Mayo saved both of my parents' lives, and you can't go wrong with what is generally considered a top 2 or 3 hospital in the country. Unfortunately, in Rochester, it would be too far away for what the original question was asking.

Re: Twin Cities Maternity Hospital Recommendation

Good news, Congrats to the Nathan Family

Re: Twin Cities Maternity Hospital Recommendation

Children's has a campus in both St. Paul and Minneapolis. They are both supposed to do very well in the maternity department, from what I understand.

Way to highjack the thread, Nathan......and congratulations!

Re: Twin Cities Maternity Hospital Recommendation

Congrats, Nathan. I hope your daughter takes after her mother. ;)

My sister also used a midwife to affect a natural, at-home delivery a few years ago. She seemed pretty happy with the experience.

Is Fairview - St. Mary's now University? That'w where my son was born. 12 births there that day - but we still got the attention and help we needed. Of course, that was 27 years ago!:)

Was St. Mary's over on Riverside? Fairview University has a couple hospitals. One on the main U campus and one on the West Bank. I had a lithotrypsy done at what I think used to be St. Mary's and is now a Fairview University.
