Re: TV: There She Is, The Old Radiation King

Watched a doc on FSN called 89 Blocks - following the East St. Louis high school football team for a season in 2016.

I found it to be riveting... maybe somewhat out of local interest at first, but it drew me in.

One of the kids featured signed with Minnesota as a QB and redshirted this season. Estes?

The Badgers will play against another in the Orange Bowl.

A great watch if you like sports docs.

If season one of Stranger Things was a 10 then season two was a solid eight. Great TV.

Re: TV: There She Is, The Old Radiation King

Thank you all for the recommendation. Dr. Mrs. & I have finally gotten back around to watching Black Mirror, so we watched "San Junipero" first because everybody here liked it so much. I LOVED it.

I can’t wait for the Jodie Foster episode. I’ve liked so much of what she’s done.

Re: TV: There She Is, The Old Radiation King

Any non-Astin? As in you enjoyed it when he was on?

Yes. Bob was the best character in Season 2 and it wasnt close!! Honestly his moments were what made the first 2-3 episodes bearable. The entire Eleven storyline was annoying from the first episode of the season, the 80s Cliche and his step sister were...well...lets just say the weird dog creatures should have eaten them instead. (though to be fair she got cool by the end) And well, the stupidity of the D'artagnian story was laughably bad. The show didnt get good until Steve stopped whining about Whatsherface and became a badass killing machine! Oh and the Conpiracy Guy gave us a look into Flaggy's future ;)

But Bob Newby...he was the true hero of the series! He was one man, working at a Radio Shack, making out with Winona Ryder and knowing all sorts of cool stuff that always saved the day! That he got Gale Bedekered is a fireable offense and Netflix should boot that person off the show!

Huh. I guess I enjoyed even the early episodes. And just in case anyone thinks I didn’t like Astin’s character, I did. Even more so when you put it that way ;)

Re: TV: There She Is, The Old Radiation King

In S2, yes. But in S1 she was great.

Oh yeah...that was why S2 was disappointing overall. Her interaction with the boys and the group dynamic is what made the show awesome. Turning into her a whiny jealous brat was a massive misstep. That is probably why I didnt hate the "Hated Episode" so much because for once she seemed back on track character-wise. Than after that the series hit a home run.

Look...if you break it down the show is rather weak and cliche. Outside of nostalgia it serves little purpose and would be easily dismissed. The kids, they make the difference. Their relationship was perfection. That was every kid and their friends pretending they were The Goonies, or Luke and the Rebels, or The Enterprise...or whatever riding around looking for adventures because real life was kind of lame. The way they talk to each other, the way they care for each other and the way they protect each other, even Eleven as the new girl, brought a level of heart to the show that made the show special. It wasnt overplayed as them being just geeks who hang out...they were a Dungeons and Dragons Playing Band of Brothers! Season 2 forgot that...at least the first half.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut all was not lost! Because one man was able to fix all the ills. One an was able to stare down the face of blandness and writers getting in the way of greatness trying to prove how smart they are and said "OH NO NOT THIS TIME!!" Much like Mikey, Rudy and Samwise Gamgee one man was able to persevere, to find the impossible, to beat all odds and sack the competition, to put the weight of the whole world on his shoulders and climb the mountain ahead of him! Bob Newby and his video camera and ability to do math and figure out ridiculous maps was an icon...a man above all men! Sure some men are stronger, sure some men are better looking, sure some have jobs that pay better...but Bob Newby still stands above them all!! :D

I think somebody may have identified with a character a little strongly. :)

Which is cool by me. I identified extremely strongly with Alan Bates' protagonist of Le Roi de Cœur:

I have to this day never been able to get Genevieve Bujold's entrance out of my mind.

Re: TV: There She Is, The Old Radiation King

I didn't mind the Eleven storyline except for that episode. Hooper had to keep her hidden, but given that she's a human being (and a teenager to boot) she's not going to like it, so she's going to be whiny. And she has a connection to Mike, so she's going to be jealous. These make perfect sense. It would be too unbelievable if everyone was just hanging around like in season 1, so they needed to go through stuff to get the gang back together.

And I'm in the minority in that Max's brother was so over-the-top that it actually made me like his character.

Actually the biggest issue I have is the "map" that Will drew. How exactly did Winona know which ones went together? They were all the same **** thing!

Width of the path. I loved the map. God I hate Will, though. Do you think if they just killed him anyone would miss him? He's so drippy.

I mean, were they all really that different in width? He was drawing in crayon, it's not like these were mechanical drawings.

To be fair, his character spent one season nearly dead in the upside-down and another season essentially going through an exorcism. It's allowed to take a bit of a toll on him.

I wondered about the same thing when she started putting them together. My story is the path width varies and matches across the squares, and the ancillary lines in other colors match up too.

In a world where Mathew Modine is a brilliant doctor and a kid can move crap with her mind I can set aside the fact that the map made zero sense. Well zero sense to everyone but Bob Newby who not only thought it was ridiculous but then figured it out anyway cause he is FLIPPING BOB NEWBY!!! :D

Are you starting a new job?
I hope it doesn’t suuuuuuck!!

Re: TV: There She Is, The Old Radiation King

I still can't believe it is ... Commander Sharon Raydor, RIP.

Even if they shut down Major Crimes they have to spin off something, don't they (ala The Closer --> Major Crimes).
