The Deuce episode 2

So far all I want is for something to happen. I know they're developing characters but I'm quickly becoming bored with this show. So much promise.

Sounds like the porno version of Vinyl. HBO tries too hard some times...too much navel gazing and slow moving plots and not enough of what makes the period cool.

On anther topic: I am sort of binge watching Narcos...it is good but not really great. The true aspect of the story makes it really interesting but honestly I feel like they stretch things a bit thin. Plus, the Cali Cartel is just not as interesting as Medellin. The second Gilberto is off the table it just gets kind of dumb and sadly that happens too quick. I feel each season is about 2 episodes too long. It is good but I feel it could be much better.

There is a Spanish version of the story, something like 80 eps that goes more in-depth and is less fictional. However, the last 10ish eps wrap it up way too quickly, compared to how detailed the lead up was. Basically from the prison escape on, it goes uber-fast and glosses over stuff. I guess it was a daily summer "series" on Telemundo or Univision when it aired.

The only compelling character so far is Darlene. There's something interesting about her story. The rest seem empty and contrived.

I haven't bothered with it and I even liked Vinyl (yes, I was the one person who liked it; sue me). Early reviews from Dr. Mrs. are that The Deuce is a dumpster fire but she's giving it a couple more episodes to right (rite?) (wright?) the ship.

They pulled the plug on Vinyl quick, so if it's getting off to a bad start it probably can't afford it.

El Patron del Mal was the series. Only on disc now on Netflix. I caught it when it was streaming.

Vinyl was about the Record Business in the 70s...Bobby Carnivale doing lots of coke and pontificating while his hair chews scenery. The soundtrack is outstanding and there was definitely a good amount of potential but it seemed they thought they were a shoe in for a season 2 so they just kind of meandered from one plot to the next. Too many characters and too many subplots it just never got going.

I recommend watching I am Dying Up Here on Showtime which is about comedy in the 70s. It is basically The LA Comedy Store (with a different name) back when they were in control of who went on Carson. As a comedy junkie I thought it was great. Jim Carrey produced it so it has an authentic feel to it.

That could be a fun watch...I wonder if the guy who plays Escobar is as good as the dude in Narcos cause he was quite good I wont lie.

Did anyone watch Manhunt: Unabomber? I found it to be quite interesting. Paul Bettany as Ted Kaczynski (or however you spell it) was really compelling.

The actor who played Escobar was really good. I'd say equal talent in portrayal. When I first started watching it, saw it was one season. Didn't know it was a daily. Whoops. By then, I was too into it. There is a different style in the story telling, definitely cultural. It was a stereotypical Mexican novella style.

The biggest issue with Narcos from the very beginning has been pacing and timing. The first season glossed over too much, and covered about 8 years, while season 2 covered about 3 months. It sounds like season 3 suffers from the same kind of issues. It is disappointing, because this show had the potential to be great, but with the pacing issues, it is only good to OK.

My wife and I did. Problem is we were only half way through the season when we had to send our Dish receiver back after cancelling Dish, and our DVR'd episodes went with it. Need to track it down streaming at some point.

it seemed they thought they were a shoe in for a season 2 so they just kind of meandered from one plot to the next. Too many characters and too many subplots it just never got going.

I hadn't thought about it like that but boy that rings a chime. They were so sure they would be picked up they were already setting up the subsequent seasons, rather than delivering on a few arcs to satisfy people immediately.

That is one hell of a good analysis.

I stopped watching Narcos midway through the first season because the violence was so intimate and believable it was intruding on my mental state. It was so good I wanted no part of it.

Muñoz’s bullet-riddled body and car were found in a remote area near San Bartolo Actopan in the state of Mexico near the borders of Hidalgo state, which is said to have one of the highest murder rates in Mexico. I haven't bothered with it and I even liked Vinyl (yes, I was the one person who liked it; sue me). Early reviews from Dr. Mrs. are that The Deuce is a dumpster fire but she's giving it a couple more episodes to right (rite?) (wright?) the ship.

I liked Vinyl too, just cause I'm a music nerd, and that era was my formative musical years.

So far, The Deuce isn't cutting it for me. It does seem very derivative of Vinyl, and I guess I just expected more from David Simon. Right now, it seems like it's maybe more George Pelecanos, and less Simon, but I thought even Pelecanos was supposed to be supremely talented. Right now, there's just nothing original or interesting about it. Very formulaic.

Did anyone watch Manhunt: Unabomber? I found it to be quite interesting. Paul Bettany as Ted Kaczynski (or however you spell it) was really compelling.

I thought the initial investigation episodes were wonderful, but then it lost steam, kind of about when they zeroed in on Kaczynski as the suspect. After that, the surveillance of his cabin bits were interesting, but that was about it. And I think it would have been better if Worthington and Bettany had swapped roles. Worthington, in his bearded exile to the cabin scenes, was a dead ringer for Kaczynski, although I'm not sure he had the acting chops to portray the character as well as Bettany did. But his Fitz was just dreadfully dull. Bettany would have been a spark in that role.

That's where that Univision series really kicks in. They go in-depth with the whole media/newspaper issue, etc, how the cartel dealt with it, everything.
