Re: TV Shows VII: Who gets canceled next?

So you hate something so much that you make a webpage- cool.

But then to WATCH the show, and post about it.

If you hate a show that much, just don't watch it.

(note- that mini-rant isn't about Survivor or them specifically- just the general haters who hate something so much that they can't miss a second of it.... odd)

I personally like survivor. No idea why, but it's just entertainment. I know there are fans here, too- but I didn't start a new survivor thread for this season.

This is actually a halfway decent season. I was almost ready to call it The Russell Hantz Show.

Re: TV Shows VII: Who gets canceled next?

I didn't mean to offend the Survivor fanboys...in fact I'm stunned that they exist. I actually didn't know that Survivor is still on TV until it was mentioned in here a couple weeks ago. I thought it was cancelled a while ago.
I think it actually still does really well. It would be interesting if the show that basically created the "reality TV" niche lasted until the epoch had passed -- if it was the "survivor," so to speak.

Reality TV seems to provoke the kind of fist-clenched-red-faced fury that few other equally stupid (which is to say, 99.9% of all) TV programming does.

Probably because it takes the best (or worst, depending on how you see it) of two worlds. Drama/shows-with-story lovers hate it because it's too much like a game show, and game show lovers hate it because there's too much storyline drama and/or is too subjective (obviously TAR is very objective, so it's the closest reality show to being a game show, and is probably why it always wins the emmy in that category).

I'm starting to lose faith that there will be another great season (all-stars aside), but I'll still watch until it's canceled. Even at its' worst the show is still ridiculously entertaining.

Even Survivor bloggers are finding the latest episodes to be predictably boring.

Like half of FOXNews' audience? :D

I generally seem to like shows that are popular. Except sitcoms. It's rare that I see a sitcom that I don't like. I am easily amused. :)

Hord on Kyre! I BERIEVE IN YOU!!!!!!

I just CANNOT get that episode of South Park out of my head...

Relax, dude. Nobody's going to take your precious Cheers out of syndication, ever. You can watch as much lazy paint-by-numbers rote comedy as you want until the end of time. Have some Three's Company while you're at it.

That's a very good point. I think the main problem Survivor faces is simply its own longevity now. The production staff has done a great job over the years creating interesting and sometimes unpredictable story arcs out of the zillions of hours of raw footage of people sitting around eating their own navel lint, but after 20 or however many cycles they've just run out of permutations. I think their solution of reusing old players is terrible -- the dynamics immediately magnetize to the old players -- either for or against them -- and we never "get to know" the new contestants the way we used to (granting the image of them was always completely artificial and mediated through the fake story arcs). Survivor is a work of fiction created by the staff after the fact, kind of like propaganda after a battle or history written by the winners -- there's a fixed scaffold of vote results and everything else is a free-form invention. But they've run out of different artificial narratives now.

You watch "Reality" tv...you don't get to look down on anyone's taste. In fact pretty much everyone gets to point at you and laugh.

What is even better is that Survivor is more scripted and paint by numbers than cheers supposedly is and I can see that only watching the commercials

Hey hey hey. Do NOT besmirch Three's Company! That was an awesomely bad show! Three's A Crowd wasn't as awesomely bad, though. And The Ropers was just plain horrid.

Edit: my favorite Three's Company episode was the one with the mix-up.

Re: TV Shows VII: Who gets canceled next?

Caugh up with Walking Dead. What an awesome show.

Story arc this season was a bit slow, but certainly not unenjoyable. I had a feeling about that twist at the end...

I fall under the "game shows" group. The entertainment in Survivor and The Amazing Race is, yes they know the game, so how are they going to play it? There's no need to continue switching it up and creating "THE... BIGGEST... TWIST... EVER...", as the reason people watch is to see who wins the game.

Plus, if you're a parent of young children, game shows are good, because it's general audience good clean fun (for the most part), unlike all of this writing and drama trash. I was SO happy when the writer's strike came about, because it meant more game shows! (even if they only lasted about 6 weeks because the writers settled)
