Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Finished The Staircase.

Candace needs some serious help. Beech be crazy.

IMO, I don't think he did it, but obviously the documentary made it lean that way. I would feel confident on "reasonable doubt" for sure.

Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Agree with all of the above.
Have you read the owl theory??

Just what I saw in the doc, and that is just bizarre. Thank you for reminding me about it, I will read into it. That was one part of the doc that kind of went nowhere, along with Margaret's (or was it Martha's?) video reviews of where the blow poke was...

Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Binge-watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel over the weekend. Really enjoyed it! Curious to see where it will go next season.

Go get Joan Crawford's biography, and you'll have a pretty good idea.

Also, Rick & Morty season 3 hit Hulu this month. I'm about halfway through the season. I want more.

I finished this over the weekend. I agree, he didn't do it. Too many things just don't agree with the conclusion that he killed her, IMO. And that is before all of the prosecution misconduct that was uncovered. Based on the misconduct alone, he should never have been convicted, even if he did do it.

Also watched The Deuce over the last week or so. Excellent show. Made by the creator of The Wire, and has that same gritty, no-holds barred style. Very rough subject matter, centered around prostitution and porn in and around Times Square in, I believe, the early '70s. Very graphic, its basically all boobs and dick, but given the story being told, it isn't gratuitous, it is needed to really tell the story they're trying to tell. James Franco, and Maggie Gyllenhall really put in great acting performances, as well as several of the actors and actresses in lesser roles. I recommend it, as long as you go into it knowing the nature of the subject matter, and what that all means. Not for the squeamish.

The Deuce was all over the place for me. Good acting by the leads, but it just seemed to be missing something. THe final episodes were good enough to earn a viewing of at least the first few episodes of S2.

Yeah, I wanted to like it a lot more than I did, just cause David Simon. But it was missing something. Heart, I think. Good performances, good sets, just seemed to be lacking why anyone should care about these people.

I think that's how I felt as well. THe final episode kind of answered that question. But it was really lacking that extra quality throughout the show. Or rather, it never convinced me.

The same could be true for a lot of shows, and I don't know how to explain how a fantasy show like Game of Thrones does it, but I just never felt compelled watching The Deuce.

Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

I know what you mean GOT had a marathon of season 7 a few weeks back and I watched some, especially the one where Arya returns to Winterfell. I don't know why, but my room became awful dusty while watching that, I guess my allergies were acting up. Just such a wonderful episode, first the reuniting with Sansa, and then finding out that Bran was there as well.

And my favorite scene.

That look on Sansa's face at the end. After wondering whether Arya was joking when she said she had a list of people she was going to kill, and then later in kind of a shocked befuddlement when Bran says Cercei was "on her list", Sansa sees for herself that Arya is not the little girl she was the last time they were together. Has no doubt in her mind that Arya has a kill list, and has worked her way through a good portion of it.

Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Exactly. The best writers have a way of roping you into rooting for or against a character. It might be as easy as making Joffrey a galactic doosh (easy) or making you emotionally attached to a character (more difficult).

GoT and Westworld do it masterfully. The Deuce was very stylish but I didn’t root for anyone, save for Darlene.

Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Thinking about starting La Reina del Sur the telemundo basis for Queen Of The South show on USA. 63 eps, though. Any of you watch the former show? Opinions?

Well, The Deuce is more like The Wire to me. Lots of bad people, and people in the gray area. No one is completely clean. But you still find yourself rooting for Omar, even though he's a cold blooded killer.

When watching The Deuce I thought the same thing happened. I was pulling for, rootinv for many characters, but the characters I pulled for may change from episode to episode. That ambiguity is what both The Deuce and The Wire excel at.

For the season as a whole, I found myself pulling for almost all of the prostitutes, and also Franco's character, can never remember which name goes to which guy.

I agree with this. Also, in Breaking Bad, you find yourself rooting for Jesse, even though he's done a bunch of evil things. Heck, most of the time, you are rooting for Walter, and he's a horrible person.

I get your first sentence, and agree totally. The problem was, none of these characters were as compelling as those on The Wire, and so I could not get into caring for or rooting for any of them.

Re: TV: Did you make Barry's List?

Watching Love Means Zero on showtime. I knew Nick Bollittieri was known for being a piece of work, but wow. What a crap human being.
I was too young to remember the details of the courier Agassi rivalry in detail, but can’t blame courier for being so upset about how he was treated
