Re: TV 10: Blacklisted Sons: The Musical

I've wanted to start watching Shameless. Maybe I'll get around to that.

Finished Orange is the New Black. Pretty good first season, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.

There is no way the family goes ahead with the show without Phil. My guess is Duck Dynasty is dead in its current form, and we'll see a reincarnation of it on a channel that is more friendly to their beliefs, and actually respects their rights.

Nothing about this situation has infringed on any of their rights. They were free to say what they said, and the network was free to respond in kind.

Free speech means you won't be imprisoned or hauled into court (with limited exceptions like slander and perjury). It doesn't mean you are free to say whatever you want without any consequences whatsoever.

Fine, let's say respect their opinion. A&E had every right to do what they did but to think that you'd put god fearing christians on a TV and then have them say something your average southern god fearing christian would say to a reporter in an interview and be surprised or go so far as to punish them for that just seems absurd.

To me, the racial comments were the worst of the lot. That had nothing whatsoever to do with his religion or being god fearing.

When he made the comment that black people were happy and weren't out in the fields 'singing the blues' I assumed he was trolling. No way someone says something so stupid. I mean, he HAS to know the origins of the Blues, right?

My assumption is that some exec at WalMart just looked around, discovered all that duck dynasty junk isn't selling like they anticipated and called they boys up and said somebody better do something about getting the audience off their couches and back into WalMart before Christmas and clear some of that crap out.

If the man lived in an area where he never personally saw a black man being beaten or made to fear white men, why is that so horrible? He was relating his experience. Clearly, he's not understood the ignorance of his childhood or the rarity of the town in which he grew up, but did he say that Jim Crow laws are good or better than the current civil rights era? The reports I've read never quote him as praising Jim Crow, they mentioned that the black people he knew then were happier than the black people he knows now, because they were rejoicing in God. That's offensive? He's a spiritual man, who rejoices in his religion and his world view in how he sees happiness is slanted that way. Why is that offensive?

True. They are also free to walk away from the show because the powers that be at the network were being overly reactionary. No one really did anything wrong per say. However, both sides did do relatively stupid things.

Exactly. While I disagree with their stance on gay marriage, that isn't what bothered me. Talking about how blacks were better under Jim Crow is why I'll never watch/support/buy any Duck Dynasty product ever again.

Do you realize how much would have to go wrong for him to think that African-Americans were happier under Jim Crow and not realize that people would have a problem with that? It is not plausible for him to be unintentionally that ignorant. And intentional ignorance (like sleeping during history class, or failing to watch/read a single news story about race relations in 30 years) is no excuse.

The fact that he clarified it as "pre-welfare, pre-entitlement" is what clinches it for me. So African-Americans were happier when they were living off the largess of the (White) farm owner, but they - and only they - are now unhappy due to government entitlements? And they suddenly lost God now that they rely on someone other than the local land owner?

**** that. I have no sympathy if he said that to a reporter for a national magazine without thinking about the potential consequences of doing so. Part of freedom of speech is the freedom to keep your mouth shut.

Re: TV 10: Blacklisted Sons: The Musical

Started watching Shameless this week. Pretty fun to see William H. Macy in this light.

Shameless is crazy good, and a lot of fun while still being a bit depressing! The new season starts I believe in January.

Thank you. A&E's hypocracy amuses me.

Not as much as the hilariously misplaced defense of this racist twit, but it's getting close.

Who all will be watching some 24 hours of A Christmas Story this year? I know I will be. Probably fall asleep watching it late at night and wake up watching it the next morning. One of my favorite things to do.
