tUMD Season Thread: B-U-L-L-D-O-G-S!

Re: tUMD Season Thread: B-U-L-L-D-O-G-S!

Anyone else find it odd Kaskisuo was pulled when Sandelin hadn't done it before when they were down? The paper said it was a combination of sending a message and unhappiness with the second goal.

Also, anyone else cringe as much as I do when opposing announcers call them the "Duluth Bulldogs"??? Is this the "Omaha" effect? Or a holdover from those awful "Duluth" jerseys?
You I thought it was out of the ordinary but thought Sandy was justified in doing so. McNeely played well and the team responded well.

As for the "Duluth" thing...it's what everyone besides UMD fans call our team. When you go to UMD or live in Duluth EVERYONE calls it UMD. I honestly think it's just easier (less syllables) to say Duluth than U.M.D. People just call us that and it's silly. Plus it's odd when people put it in game stories. That doesn't seem like that would be part of AP Style.

It was a great weekend in Houghton and it was fun to see UMD play in that building. For obvious reasons I'll miss it. But on the bright side Mel Pearson mentioned that Sandelin are working on another home and home series after next season. He didn't quite say it was a verbal agreement to play for sure, but a verbal agreement to look into scheduling. Hopefully that works out.

It was tough to lose with that little time like that on a pass and a player that shouldn't have been open like that... Sucks but it was nice to see them make a game of it. It was a gut punch of a loss but hey that's hockey.

I'm VERY happy with where this UMD team is at at this point. 12-6 with the toughest schedule in the country, first in the conference and currently a number 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Fingers crossed that this team doesn't have a late January/Feburary let down (like this team usually has). Hopefully this team can do some special things (like how about win a regular season title for the first time in 25 years?!).

Can't wait for the UND series as I'll be making my first trip there for UMD hockey in 8 years.

After following UMD for MANY years, I just don't recall anyone referring to them as Duluth except in the last couple of years. I always thought maybe people figured if UNO wanted to be Omaha, we must want to be...Duluth. But it's like Ciskie said, once he found out MSU-M hated being called Mankato, he didn't make that mistake again. Oh, well.

Agree McNeely played well after not having played for so long. Also agree with being very happy where the team sits now. It's going to be a long couple of weeks with no Bulldog hockey!

I noticed in teh intro video this year, during the 1984 Frozen Four highlights the play by play guy calls UMD "The Duluth Bulldogs!". I'm thinking it's been a thing for a while. Plus living in the Cities people shorten school names (Mankato, St. Cloud, Bemidji, Duluth) and part of the name is that.

It is pretty much shortening of the names. When you're calling a sport, especially such a fluid one as hockey, a long name might kill your announcing flow in calling the game.

The Athletic Department at UNO wants us to be called "Omaha".

Not the fans.

The media here doesn't call them Omaha, either. Nor do our own broadcasters. And, that's hilarious since the school has asked the league and media types around the league covering the other NCHC teams to call us that as well, in press releases and by letter.

I wouldn't be caught dead in an "Omaha" jersey. And, our fans are NEVER going to be chanting "Omaha" during a game, either. That ain't ever happenin'.

The school's own web site doesn't even call it "Omaha". It's UNO. The Athletic Department's web site calls us both on the top of the home page.

This was done as a marketing ploy (with little rationale given for it and ZERO input from fans of any sport at the school) a couple seasons ago and every UNO fan I have ever asked about this has said the same thing to me. Forget it. On a long list of idiotic things UNO's Athletic Department has done over the past 3 or 4 seasons, this one is well up on that list.

It is but it is just lazy. Our play-by-play guys for our sports have no difficulty saying UMD each time. Just say one more syllable and it will be fine.

I'm sure they did to distinguish themselves from Nebraska. Hence having more black than red nowadays. Didn't know that UNO fans dislike being called Omaha, I'll have to call them UNO then.

This happened along with the unveiling of the catchphrase "Omaha's Team". I don't find it offensive, really. It is just trite and made up. And, incorrect. That is NOT the name of the school. As I said, even the school doesn't refer to itself as Omaha. The whole thing is a complete contrivance (and, a misguided one, at that) by the Athletic Department. I am sure the Nebraska thing probably figured into it and nobody would understand that better than Trev Alberts.

I have NEVER heard a single Maverick fan refer to us as Omaha. EVER. Because it is literally wrong. You don't start calling dogs cats just because somebody tells you to and says this is the way its going to be from now on.

I remember the Gopher's announcers on FOX Sports North a couple season ago when we were playing them in Minneapolis saying that they had been given a directive of some kind by UNO to start referring to us as Omaha. They no sooner got this out of their mouths and then spent the rest of the game referring to us, more often than not, as UNO. Same thing happened when UNO played Miami a couple weekends ago on Fox College Sports by their broadcasters. They joked and laughed about this, on the air, even, and made some sort of "Why on Earth" comment when they mentioned it.

The whole thing is just plain stupid since the Athletic Department is the only entity that will ever refer to us as "Omaha" (and the kowtowing NCHC and USCHO, apparently). It's pretty funny, really as it reminds me of a kid I knew in school that all of a sudden wanted everybody to start calling him a nickname that HE made up and gave himself. It doesn't work like that and nobody ever did (actually, it got used to mock him, on occasion, even). We just thought he was silly.

My guess is that this ends, at some point or another, in the future. Ask North Dakota fans how they feel about a forced name change to their team. The difference here is, we do have a choice and the people that pay the bills (i.e. the fans) wishes will rule and have seemingly pretty much already made up their minds.

This is exactly what we talked about with UMD and people calling us "Duluth".

Re: tUMD Season Thread: B-U-L-L-D-O-G-S!

Well, Bulldog fans, any thoughts on going from being deep at forward to now having one extra forward? Reading lots of speculation on Boehm's departure...some hope with "family reasons" and returning to his old team (where he retains NCAA eligibility), he may be back next season. I have also read he didn't quit the team, but the DNT writer is saying his career with UMD is done. Hope everyone else can remain healthy!

I'm guessing it was partly due to his lack of playing time. I was excited to see him in a Bulldog uniform but, you gotta do what's best for you and your family. Let's just hope we don't get any injuries...I'm not concerned about it unless it happens.

Re: tUMD Season Thread: B-U-L-L-D-O-G-S!

Giving this a bump because I've got some thoughts on the weekend.

WMU gave UMD fits last weekend, they were physical and the Dogs didn't want to fight for the slot and areas in front of the net. They played well enough to win both games but couldn't bury their chances. It was a disappointing weekend but that was a hot WMU team so it wasn't so bad.

But that game against BSU was awful, they were out played and let the aggressive and speedy Beaver forecheck and backcheck kill their offensive and defensive flow. They looked so disjointed that it was their worst game of the year by far. Now BSU played the best of any team at the North Star College Cup, so it doesn't look so bad now. But it was hopefully rock bottom for this season.

The game against the Gophers should have been a loss. They played well in the first and second periods and probably would have put up more if they weren't playing against a great goalie in Wilcox. But that third period was tough, they were outplayed by a long shot. I mean it took them almost 18 minutes of the period to register their first shot (and luckily it went in). The Gophers had multiple chances to bury the puck and win the game and they didn't. McNeely was good enough, but you can tell why he wasn't started a majority of his career, big rebounds and slow moving from side to side. He was lucky they didn't bury those chances...but that's goaltending and he was good enough to win.

After the BSU game and getting ripped by Sandy and having a players only meeting (which I trust the Krause leadership so much), that win against UMTC will hopefully be a confidence builder against DU next weekend. They still have things to work on, turnovers, offensive breakout, power play, and goaltending but Denver is a place they've played historically well. Hopefully they can win a game or two and go on a nice winning streak through the rest of the season.

Re: tUMD Season Thread: B-U-L-L-D-O-G-S!

I watched the game against Denver Friday night. That had to have been the worst 5 minute major called that I have ever seen.

Easily the worst I have seen. I mean it was an open ice hit...not even a penalty and they make it out to be a 5 minute major. The game is fast and all but how do you get that out of that hit? Quite the dive by the DU player for sure

I don't know if it was a dive or not, but the play happened right in front of me. Chris and I thought they gave a two minute penalty, but then the linesman went to talk to a quite unhappy Sandelin and 5 minutes were put up on the board. The funniest thing was when Chris and I both looked at each other when the penalty was announced as a 5 minute interference. Huh? Five minute interference? No game misconduct. Weird indeed. I'd never heard of that before...

No, I think the DU player was really hurt. Watched the replay several times and he looked dazed on the bench. But the contact was more incidental than anything. Two minutes for interference is all that should have been called. My guess is that the refs saw that he was injured and decided to make up a penalty.

BSU got a five minute interference in the North Star Cup last weekend. First time I had seen it. On the replay, it looked like there could have been some slight contact to the head or he left his skates.

I photographed last weekend's series between tUMD and DU at Magness Arena. I haven't tagged the photos yet, but the Friday night shots are up on my website:

Please visit and feel free to leave comments on my site or right here. I will be working on the Saturday night game shots during the evenings this week.

This shot almost shows where the puck was on the Krause no goal on Friday. Looks like it is not quite in, in this picture. I thought it was a goal but you couldn't specifically tell where the puck was so they weren't going to call it a goal.

You don't have another shot or two in there do you?

That's probably a good explanation. Not sure why you call it when they are injured...perhaps the DU bench complained and got them to change it?
