Re: TRP: Holidays and New Years Resolutions

Nothing weird about that. Fresh tomatoes are delicious. Especially with mozzarella, basil, and balsamic :) Heck, I used to grab fresh tomatoes from the garden and snack on them like an apple. Y'all who don't like fresh tomatoes are just freaks. :p

On a bacon related note: how does everyone prefer their bacon, and what is your preferred bacon cooking process? I know some like their bacon burnt to a crisp. I'll cook it till crispy for sandwiches or if it's requested that way, but in general I prefer my bacon limp and fatty.

I like to buy thick cut bacon, and cook it in the oven on a broiling pan at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Cooks it all the way through, but doesn't cook all the fat out. That fat is flavor, folks!

In my belly. Nom nom nom. :)
I like somewhere in the middle--crispy on the edges, but not overly so. :)

Now that I own one, I cook it in a cast iron skillet. I cook until slightly crispy on the edges, but softer in the middle. For sandwiches, soups, and pasta sauces, I cook until crispy, but not burnt.

Not sure if you follow Top Chef, but there was an episode last season (I think) where the chef won a challenge based on her bacon cooking technique. She cross-hatched the bacon on a cookie sheet and painted it with glaze. Apparently it was to die for. I should look for the recipe... :)

BLT's would be good, if you replace the T with something else. :p
I can't tomatoes either. I can't even eat a tomato sauce if there are chunks of tomato in it, and that's really hard to find. I don't even like ketchup.

Bigger fan of the BCE (Bacon, Cheese, Egg)

And this is another reason why I'm strange: I could (and do) eat slices of tomato. They've got to be fresh, though, and very ripe. Mmmmm... :)

Also good with salt or sugar, but I think mozz, basil and balsamic with a bit of olive oil is king.

(my girlfriend doesn't care for tomatoes either, but hey, more for me :D)

Yup, what diva said. I used to like my bacon just like DC, but recently have preferred it cooked a bit harder. Not crispy, but enough to give it bite.

Emeril's Vodka Sauce is a good one - hardly any chunks. I hate chunks of tomato in sauce also (and tomato in most things). It is really hard to find a jarred sauce that doesn't have chunks (and they certainly won't advertise "not chunky!" so you have to kind of guess).

Re: TRP: Holidays and New Years Resolutions

You could buy tomato paste and add a little garlic and Italian seasoning. It might work out for you.

Re: TRP: Holidays and New Years Resolutions

You don't like tomatoes, yet you want tomato sauce? Yeah, that makes sense.

Re: TRP: Holidays and New Years Resolutions

Not a fan of tomatoes, but when I was in Greece lat year, the tomatoes in the salads there were out of this world. I also don't like chunks of tomato in sauce. I used crushed tomatoes when making my sauce - there are still some chunks, but its minimal.

I like bacon but never make it for myself. I don't eat it enough to buy a whole package. It would go bad.

For me, it isn't the taste of the tomato I don't like, it's the texture of the tomato chunks mixed in with the sauce. I can't explain it exactly, but it reminds me of baked fruit (which I don't like either, just for textural reasons).

I buy it and then split the package when I get home from the store. Individually wrap sections (used to be 3 pieces per section, now 6 since I have to share) in plastic wrap and freeze. Take it out in the morning and place in a bowl of hot water before you hop in the shower. Come out of the shower, blowdry hair, make coffee, and poof! Bacon is ready for cooking.

I'll have to try crushed tomatoes next time I make tomato sauce.

Where did your comment about the bacon go? I quoted your post and it disappeared...Anyway, I do the same thing you do with roasts, family-sized packs of chicken and steak, etc., which tend to go on sale on Tuesdays. Individually wrap servings (or several servings, so I have leftovers for lunch) and freeze. Defrost when I feel like eating that particular meat.

Re: TRP: Holidays and New Years Resolutions

You had it covered, so I got rid of mine.

I buy the cheapest roasts on sale, and stick them in the crock pot for 10-12 hours.

I do that with everything else I buy, I have no idea why I am so against doing it for bacon. OK, so now I am jumpng on the bacon bandwagon. What brand(s) do you all recommend.
