TRP: Changing Conferences Since 1999

Re: TRP: Changing Conferences Since 1999

My extreme immediate distrust of ANY police officer will basically keep me off the jury in any criminal case. I assume that they will go to ANY length to get a conviction, from lying on the stand to planting evidence.
I've have a small number of brushes with law enforcement over the years (11 or 12), mostly just traffic stops, but a couple other stupid teenager things and an incident on the light rail about 16 months ago, too. I've only had two experiences where I thought the cop was in the job for the chance to wield power rather than simply doing his work honestly.

I did get a kick out of the customs officer searching my 6000 c.i. backpack as I arrived in the country from Europe. I had been overseas for just over two weeks of a heatwave that hit while I was in Italy for most of it, rotating through all of my clothes except underwear and socks, which I made sure to have a fresh pair of each, and the guy must have thought that I fit the profile of someone try to smuggle stuff into the country. He spent about 15 minutes tearing that thing apart only to find himself elbow deep in very dirty laundry. He almost made me miss my connecting flight to MSP. That would have been irritating.

Drunk and disorderly on the light rail? :p

Drunk and disorderly on the light rail? :p
I have a monthly unlimited mass transit pass, usually ride the bus, but took the train that day. I forgot to validate the pass that morning, but it was paid up through the next two months. The officer threatened to give me a ticket for fare evation. I told him what I thought about that in a polite, direct way, mentioning that my fare was paid well in advance, and this went back and forth a bit. Eventually he walked away, because he knew I was in the right, but I think he wanted to show off for the two DHS agents that were making the rounds with him that morning.

That day, when I got into work, I looked up my state legislator's email address, taking the officer's word that not validating my fare constituted fare evasion, even though I had clearly paid already, and asked him to address having the law altered. My state rep took it to Metro Transit Police, and eventually I got an email from Capt. Levine telling me that he'd have some words with the officer, effectively telling him to stop harassing Metro Transit patrons, but then also asked that I validate my pass each time I ride the train. I could forward you the email exchange, if you'd like. I posted a redacted version on here back in December 2010.

Re: TRP: Changing Conferences Since 1999

I got pulled over for tailgating last September. C'mon, Deputy Fife...aren't there a couple unsolved murder cases you could work on?

Re: TRP: Changing Conferences Since 1999

Even if I'm doing nothing wrong (which is usually the case... usually), under no circumstances will I allow a police officer to search my car. Probable cause gives an officer a lot of leeway, but should they find anything (they won't), I'd challenge (and likely win) anything they find if their probable cause consisted of "uhhh, I smelled pot or something".

I have a ton of respect for the police, but there's no way I'm waiving my 4th Amendment rights because a cop is bored.

Detectives don't work traffic patrol. Uniformed officers don't conduct investigations.

Besides that, how many people die each year because of stupid driving? If you're too close to another car, I'd prefer if it's not mine.

Re: TRP: Changing Conferences Since 1999

On a driver's ed exam in high school I purposefully got the question that asked "What should you do if you are being tailgated?" wrong with the answer "LOCK THEM UP."

My teacher put a -1 and a smiley face in red pen by it.

Yeah, I tap the brakes, too. If I'm being tailgated, it's because they wanna do 80 in a 55 instead of 65, or I'm in the right lane and they are an ahole.

I'll hold the brake just enough for the brake lights to turn on and hold it there so they think I'm slowing down and back off...

Re: TRP: Changing Conferences Since 1999

They were doing 25 in a 30 and there was a stop sign a half a block away. I wasn't going to get anywhere. I was basically coasting at that point. And if you don't ride someone's tail or honk your horn, morons won't know when they're doing something wrong.

Get honked at a lot, do you? :)

Re: TRP: Changing Conferences Since 1999

If you're in the left lane and you're not the fastest car on the road, don't be a dink, move over, let them pass, and then get back over.

The only time I don't move over is if I'm following the car in front of me at a reasonable distance, we're in traffic, and moving over gains nothing for either of us.

It's amazing how many people seem to forget this.

Re: TRP: Changing Conferences Since 1999

If I am currently passing vehicles and I am doing 15-20 over you can flash your stupid lights and honk all you want, I'm not going anywhere until the right lane is clear.

Yeah, that's part of what I meant by traffic. I'm in the same boat.

Similarly, when passing, don't be the dickhead who floors it and cuts off the car both of you just passed, to get around the guy in front of you. Give him a reasonable amount of time and space to get back over into the right lane. Of course, these types of dickheads are generally the dickheads who do 90+.
