Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

From my limited experience in Europe, a rental car has been helpful. In the UK (specifically Scotland) I wanted to visit some distilleries, and many are out in the middle of nowhere, in the highlands, and there wasn't train access to them, so in that case the rental car was great. When I was in the Netherlands, I drove as well, because our jobsite was out in the middle of nowhere, and again, a car was helpful.

My girlfriend and I are heading to Iceland and Scotland in September of 16 and we've noticed a rental car is pretty necessary if you want to get around in northern Scotland, especially some of the remote places we want to visit.

Yeah, I would recommend it for the highlands of Scotland. I'm sure you can see a lot by rail, but if you have specific destinations in mind that are off the beaten path, like I did, a car is probably needed.

It also takes a long time to get anywhere. Looks smaller than it is when the roads are narrow and a bit windy. It is absolutely gorgeous tho. So jealous. Have family there and wish we could go visit. Flights have become cost prohibitive :(

DO NOT FLY SPIRIT AIRLINES!!

Son's flight from MSP to BWI was cancelled. Next available space was Saturday. His brother gets married Saturday -that's not going to work.

For some stupid (prescient?) reason, I purchased travel insurance for his trip. Son goes to Spirit counter to get rebooked on another airline. No can do. Asks for a refund. No can do. Must go through the travel insurance company. What can they do for him? No can do.

Meanwhile I'm on the phone to Spirit customer(?) service. They're in India. He's not travelling to India! So what can you do for me? Nothing. Go to the travel insurance company. Agent was about as useful as teets on a boar hog.

Memo to self: DO NOT FLY SPIRIT AIRLINES!!! Hopefully the Monday return goes better.

Book Southwest for a OW ticket from MSP - BWI via KC. Hope I can get my money back.

EDIT: SURPRISE!!! I called India again. Got somebody who knew what they were doing. Refund in process!!!

You only fly Spirit if you're willing to roll the dice. When they say no-frills they mean you get absolutely nothing, including accountability or customer service. If you don't like it, they don't care - there's another sucker out there who will replace whatever revenue they lose from you.

I can fly on Spirit for free and I still won't...

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

My hostess for my Twin Cities Marathon trip just informed me we're going to a Wild preseason game on 10/1; means I will have been to a Wild game before a Red Wings game.

Also: packet pickup for the marathon is at the River Center. Can anyone recommend a pizza joint near there?

How far are you willing to walk? The two best options are Red's Savoy Inn, maybe a mile walk (probably less) east down 7th St, or Cossetta's which is just a couple block to the west of the the River Center along 7th St. Personally, I much prefer Red's Savoy though they're both good options.

Re: Travel Part 2 - Where ya headed?

I pretty much only trust Delta and United. After that it's a crap shoot.

For me it's Delta or American. Unlike a lot of folks, the only issues I've had with AAL since the start of the merger have been weather-related - that DFW hub is perfectly situated to get smacked with summer thunder and winter ice. Only fly UAL when I don't have a choice, or the fares are significantly lower, but I am also horribly biased against anything associated with "The Worst Airline Ever", Continental.

I'll have to give you a ride in my Gulfstream sometime. Some other wealthy current and former porn stars for company, good booze, and hours of Sioux hockey video. Except the '14 semifinal: there's obscenity and there's Obscenity.

I thought they cancelled the Frozen Four in '14....

Not so much cancelled as taken off the books due to all the fraud and corruption in the semis. The final was legit, but how do you keep that on the books?

The whole thing would have gone unnoticed had they not found a goat in the timekeeper's hotel room.

I assume you're headed for Tampa next April. Can I pre-book? I promise to tolerate the Sioux hockey footage, with no peanut gallery commentary. :D ;)

The more the merrier, and Techies (Techers? Techsters?) get a commentary pass.

Thank you. I don't mind walking; I'm a long-distance runner.

I'll tell my hostess I want to go to Red's Savoy.
