If the NFL is so worried about prospect development, they could set up their own training programs rather than outsourcing it.

The NCAA is way cheaper for them. I've never understood why the only path to play in the NFL was through college when the majority of those players are not true college material.

Only a small percentage of NCAA football players will wind up playing in the NFL (32 rosters, each much smaller than the triple-digit rosters at an Alabama or tOSU). There are far more players in college who will need to use their degree than will find themselves playing on Sundays.

The real takeaway for me is that both individual development and team-building ethos are put at risk by the portal. The NFL itself (or a whistle blowing few) are saying that college sports are not the winners here, especially not the putative student/athletes. I think most of us would agree. It’s the fact that this realization is coming from on high that I find so interesting.

I happened to check on the portal web sites tonight, saw a half-dozen St Anselm players entering the last couple days. So I went to their web site to see what's up.
St Anselm as a school has decided to drop from being a D-II to D-III school.
Maybe someone here can confirm or correct this, but I read one person saying that while a D-II school can choose to "play up" to D-I, a D-III school cannot. Meaning if St Anselm is continuing with women's hockey, they won't be doing so in the NEWHA.
One way or another, at least six more players aren't hanging around to find out.

A D-II school can compete for the D-I championship in sports where the NCAA doesn't sponsor a D-II championship. They have to follow the athletic scholarship rules of D-II; but to my best understanding, the NCAA began allowing D-II women's ice hockey to have the same amount of athletic scholarships as D-I as of a few years ago.
In the case of what the NCAA terms as "reclassification", St. Anselm will no longer be eligible for the D-I championship once they become a D-III institution. I believe there is some debate about which conference the hockey programs will end up in on the D-III men's board.
