Transfer Portal - 2024

I don't like the transfer portal. But those are the rules of the current game, unfortunately. And why wouldn't Muzzy try to attract top transfers? Her job is to put the best team on the ice and if a player out there makes them better she should try to get them. As a Badger fan it is hard for me to throw shade at Muzzy when some key performers over the years (Kristen Campbell, Darryl Watts, Kennedy Blair, Jesse Compfer, Anna Wiltgren) have transferred to the Badgers.

Wouldn't be surprised if Mark Johnson keeps his eye open for a potential transfer(s) especially if Wheeler and O'Brien decide not to come back.

In her pre Final Faceoff interview she was talking about how the transfer portal has changed things and any coach who doesn't adapt to it is behind the eight ball.

. No, quite likely there were violations. Just ones that are very hard to prove.

It probably wouldn't be too hard to prove, just have to take a look at a person's cell phone. It is very brazen to do what they did, the smarter play is to let things sit quiet for a few days and then announce it. Sure wouldn't seem very fair if other coaches were playing by the rules and there was one who wasn't. I think that's worth looking into.

There was an interesting article, I think in The Athletic, where all the negotiations for transfers occur behind the scenes all during the year. It's carried out by the players' agents and representatives. By the time the transfer portal dates come, everyone knows what is going to happen. Applying to the portal is just a formality (and they are only applying because nine of out ten times, they know exactly what's going to happen.)

Two players who know each other from high school or 'club' (or national team camps, etc) texting back and forth isn't a violation. A coach 'suggesting' to a player that she text with her friend from high school or club would be a violation.

portal has underclassmen in it now. what does march 17 signify?

Students about to graduate with eligibility remaining can enter the portal 'any time', as grad transfers. Undergrads who are going through a coaching change (eg the announcement today that Minn-Mankato coach is retiring) or having their scholarship reduced can enter 'any time'.

It is only undergrads planning to use their "one-time exception" as undergrads who must wait for the portal to "open" before submitting their names.

Exactly what I was alluding to. The Muzzinator is going to score big again. (Big Grin)

It appears that new names are appearing regularly in the transfer portal, https://gopherpucklive.com/transfer-portal/, yet the dates as 'posted' on this thread are: Opens March 17
Closes April 30

Is there a way players declare for the Transfer Portal before it opens on March 17?

The NCAA doesn't have the subpoena power it would take to force a look at someone's cell phone.

I see Josey Dunne at Minnesota is in the portal. I wonder if we'll have two Dunne's at Ohio State next season?

Quite possible, but, as much as I wish her well, I don't see Josey being a contributor on a really good program. She can't stay healthy, and, even on the rare occasions she could dress, looked a lot more like a role player.

Honestly, my goal for her is that she gets a good degree, and goes on to have a life without too much arthritis.

Actually I was told she hadn't made a decision yet but I don't know what offers she has.
I know full well how the health issues make an athlete a question mark, my daughter was a top prospect for D1 softball but the offers got scarce when she tore her labrum in her throwing shoulder her senior year of HS.

Today, Sunday the 17th, is the day the transfer portal opens for "one time exception" undergrad transfers.

Because it's Sunday, I don't know what if anything we will hear. That depends on how diligent about working on Sunday university compliance officers and those reporting entrants to us are.

A little over a year ago, an all-BigTen volleyball player, Carter Booth, described on a podcast the process as she experienced it. She said once the paperwork is all signed and in place, and the student-athlete gives the compliance officer the final go-ahead, the rest happens literally in minutes. She said within a very few minutes - within five minutes - she had multiple contacts from schools and coaches, text, emails, phone calls, etc.

The 'schedule' for the ice hockey window changed from last year to this, so comparing numbers of players is going to be 'complicated'. Last year (as best I can tell) the window opened the day after 'selection Sunday' and not a week later, AND 'selection Sunday' came five days earlier in the month. That is to say, the portal opened on March 6th, 2023. Prior to that, from Feb 1st through March 5th, there had been 11 names put into the portal (grad transfers, etc). So far this year, with a longer period, there have been 38 names put in (24 through the same March 5th date). Through the rest of March last year - 3/6 through 3/31 - 62 names went in, including many but certainly not all of the 'big names'. Fifteen went in the first day, eight the second, etc etc.

(Numbers from the spreadsheets maintained by gopherpucklive web site.)

So we'll see over the next couple weeks how 'active' the portal is here in the final year of 'COVID seasons'.
