First period is in the books, and it was an exciting twenty minutes! Maine got the scoring underway just under five minutes in when Brad Purdie scored after the puck took a strange carom and bounced to his stick in the slot. The lead would not last long though, as BU tied the game at 1 when Jay Pandolfo redirected a Chris O'Sullivan shot from the point past Blair Allison. It looked like the first period might end in a tie, but the Black Bears scored late when Chris Imes notched Maine's second goal of the period on a blast from the point. Through twenty mintues of play, Maine leads 2-1. Shots on goal in the 1st: Maine - 11, BU - 8.

Third period is just about to start, but the second was a tremendous 20 minutes of play. Maine's Jamie Thompson rang a wrister off the post early in the period, as the Black Bears tried to take a two goal advantage. Nearing the midpoint of the period, BU knotted the game at 2 when Ken Rausch scored. The Terriers then took a 3-2 lead with just under two minutes to go when Jacque Joubert converted a breakaway. The Black Bears responded though, seconds later, when Shawn Wansborough lit the lamp to tie the game at 3. The period ended with the game still tied 3-3. Should be a great third!

Due to the weather (read: I've been having choppy internet all day, and will probably need to have a tech come and fix it), the DU-UNH game that was scheduled for this afternoon will instead be played tomorrow (potentially Sunday).

I just thought I'd give another update about the Tournament. Obviously, I'm a little behind where I was hoping to be, but I do have a little bit of time this week (although, not as much as originally thought). Consequently, I will be planning on doing "full recaps" of the three games that were requested this week. There will also be games going on alongside the full recapped games, so I'll be pulling a little bit of double duty.

Today's Big Game will be:
#8 - 1984-1985 Rensselaer vs. #57 - 1999-2000 North Dakota
Game Time will be 3:00pm Eastern
Other games going on at the same time will be:
#25 - 1970-1971 BU vs. #40 - 1984-1985 Minnesota Duluth
#4 - 1986-1987 North Dakota vs. #61 - 2003-2004 Maine

Tomorrow's Big Game will be:
#3 - 1960-1961 Denver vs. #62 - 2001-2002 New Hampshire
Game Time will be 3:00pm Eastern
Other games going on at the same time will be:
#10 - 1997-1998 Michigan State vs. #74 - 2009-2010 Miami
#22 - 1955-1956 Michigan vs. #86 1974-1975 Michigan Tech

Thursday's Big Game will be:
#21 - 2010-2011 North Dakota vs. #44 - 2000-2001 North Dakota
Game Time will be 10:00am Eastern
Other games going on at the same time will be:

That should help catch up a bit. If I can keep to this schedule, there will be 14 games remaining. Ideally, I would get that done over the following two weekends (perhaps with a similar Big game accompanied by 2 other games/day schedule). However, it is entirely possible that the Round of 64 will stretch into/past the Frozen Four.

Game Update Post but please chime in

Ladies and Gentlemen...Boys and Girls...Welcome to the Northeast Regional Round of 64 matchup between the 1984-1985 RPI Engineers and the 1999-2000 North Dakota Fighting Sioux! The introductions are underway, and the crowd is waiting with bated breath as to who will be announced as the singer of the National Anthem! Stay tuned!

AND IT'S REO SPEEDWAGON!!!

What a beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Well...I certainly can't fight this feeling any longer...let's play some hockey!! It's a CCHA crew working the game today, and they'll be set to drop the puck in just a moment.

First Period:
- Puck has dropped and we're underway at Madison Square Garden!
- Adam Oates Scores! RPI takes an early 1-0 lead just 22 seconds into this one, as Mark Jooris won a puck battle in the far corner, and the puck came out to Oates who drifted over to the point and unleashed a blistering slap shot that rocketed past Karl Goehring, and the Engineers have skated to an early 1-0 lead. 19:38 left in the 1st
- North Dakota coming back strong here after that early goal. Nothing really to show for it yet, but Sioux generating some good pressure in the offensive zone.
- Daren Puppa with a great save! Lee Goren got the puck on his stick all alone in the slot, and he tried to wrist one high, but Puppa got his glove on it to keep this game at 1-0. 17:00 left in the 1st.
- RPI starting to gain control of the puck. Mike Dark with a nice chance from the point a moment ago, but Goehring got his glove on it to keep the Sioux within 1. 15:45 left in the 1st.
- What a Save by Karl Goehring! John Carter came in on a partial break and tried to deke backhand to forehand, but Goehring stuffed Carter. RPI has had some great opportunities here, and this one could easily be more than just a 1-0 game. 14:30 left in the 1st.
- North Dakota really skating well and controlling play at the moment. They've seemed to weather the storm, but will they be able to capitalize? 12:45 left in the 1st.
- Tim Skarperud Scores!! Aaron Schneekloth dumped the puck in from center and Skarperud won the battle for the puck in the corner. Skarperud was then able to skate out to the bottom of the far circle, and initially fanned on his wrister. That sent Puppa off balance, and Skarperud was able to regain control of the puck, and slid it in the back of the net. We're tied at 1 here in New York! 12:19 left in the 1st[/size]
- It's all North Dakota right now. RPI doing a good job of limiting the Sioux chances to outside shots, but possession almost exclusively with North Dakota at the moment. 11:00 left in the 1st.
- Lee Goren nearly scores, but his wrister from the near dot just goes wide. A few North Dakota fans thought the puck went in, but it was just the puck brushing past the outside of the net. Still 1-1 with 10:00 to go in the opening frame!
- Play has settled down a bit here of late. North Dakota controlling play though, and it seems that it's just a matter of time before the Sioux strike again. Puppa doing a solid job of limiting rebounds at the moment though. 8:00 left in the 1st.
- North Dakota will head to the powerplay, as Adam Oates gets called for Boarding. Coach Addesa not pleased with the call, but the Sioux will have the man advantage with 6:17 left to play in the 1st.
- Jason Ulmer scores! Just 14 seconds into the man advantage, Goren found Ulmer streaking into the slot. Ulmer one-timed the beautiful lob pass over the blocker of Puppa, and the Sioux have a 2-1 lead. 6:03 to go in the 1st.
- RPI trying to get some momentum back right now. A lot of play in the neutral zone. The Sioux still playing great. They'll need to keep this up if they want to pull the upset this afternoon. 4:00 to play in the 1st.
- Mike Commodore with a punishing hit on George Servinis in the neutral zone, and Servinis is down. 2:45 left in the 1st.
- North Dakota will head back to the powerplay as Ken Hammond gets called for Roughing after the whistle. There was a scrum in front of Goehring, and Chad Mazurak took exception to John Tiano getting a little to closer to his netminder. Then Hammond came in and leveled Mazurak. The play got the RPI squad energized, but they will also be shorthanded for the next two minutes. 2:20 left in the 1st.
Lee Goren Scores!! Bryan Lundbohm won an offensive zone draw back to Travis Roche, who fired a slapshot. Puppa got a piece of it, but the puck trickled behind Puppa and Goren was the first to the puck, and slammed it home to give North Dakota a 3-1 lead with just 1:41 left in the 1st.
- That's the end of the opening period. North Dakota leads 3-1. SOG: RPI - 14, UND - 10

In other action:
- Puck is about to be dropped in Philadelphia for the #25 - 1970-1971 BU Terriers vs. #40 - 1984-1985 Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs. The crowd was roaring after the Osmonds sang a tremendous National Anthem. Hopefully both squads play strong, as it only takes one bad apple to spoil a team's chances of moving on. I'll have more updates from this game after the first period is over in Philly!
- First period in the books in Philly, and it looked like it would end scoreless, until John Danby scored with just under 90 seconds left to put BU up 1-0. That is where we're at after twenty minutes of play. The winner of this game will matchup with the winner of the RPI-UND game.
- BU takes a 3-1 lead into the second intermission following another late period goal. The Terriers initially took a 2-0 lead early in the period on another John Danby goal, this time unassisted. The Bulldogs responded, as Brett Hull scored a few minutes later to put Duluth back within one. It looked like that's where play would end after forty minutes, but Danby found Toot Cahoon for a goal, and BU leads 3-1 after two periods in Philly!

2nd Period:
- The Puck has dropped for the 2nd period...3-1 Sioux
- Pretty tame opening minutes here in the 2nd. Neither side mounting much of anything at the moment. 18:00 left in the 2nd.
- Ken Hammond hits the post! George Servinis was back out on the ice to start the second, and Goehring stopped his wrister but the rebound went to Hammond who tried to poke the puck past Goehring. The puck slid underneath the Sioux goalie, but hit the post. Score still 3-1 with 17:00 to go
- We're back to a lot of play in the neutral zone right now. My guess is the Sioux are probably okay with that at the moment. 15:00 left in the 2nd.
- Bob DiPronio scores!! DiPronio was tied up with Mike Commodore in the near corner, and final won the puck, skated behind the Sioux net and tried a wraparound. The puck may have bounced off someone, but either way it beat Goehring and wound up in the back of the net. RPI back in this one, down just a goal with 13:54 left in the 2nd.
- Ouch, North Dakota will head back to the powerplay, after Adam Oates gets called for hooking. The Engineer faithful were primed and ready to go after that goal, but now they are back on the edge of their seats. 13:31 left in the 2nd.
- Scorin' Lee Goren!! Lee Goren won a battle in the far corner, and fed the puck back to Chris Leinweber. Leinweber skated the puck to the top of the slot, then found Goren at the near dot. Goren quickly wristed the puck over the outstretched blocker of Puppa, and the Sioux regain the two goal edge. 4-2 North Dakota with 13:18 to play in the 2nd.
- North Dakota nearly added another one moments after the Goren goal, but Puppa made a great kick save on Brad DeFauw. RPI now starting to take control of play a little bit. 12:00 left in the 2nd.
- Neil Hernberg stoned by Goehring! Hernberg came in on a 2 on 1 with Servinis, received the pass in the slot and had apparently half the net to shoot at. He wristed it on, but Goehring makes a HUGE glove save to keep the Sioux up 2. 10:30 to go in the 2nd.
- RPI really dominating right now, but can't get one past Goehring. Oates was the most recent victim of robbery, as Goehring got just the toe of his skate out to stop Oates' blast from the point. 9:00 to play in the 2nd.
- Puck gets deflected out of play with 7:00 to go in the 2nd. RPI completely controlling play at the moment.
- Oh My!! What a Save!! Sprawled out after making a great stop on Mark Jooris, Goehring somehow finds Servinis' rebound attempt with his glove. 5:30 to go in the middle frame, and North Dakota maintains its 2 goal lead thanks to Goehring.
- This has got to be frustrating for the RPI faithful. The Engineers are outplaying North Dakota, outskating, outhitting, outchancing them, but they cannot solve Karl Goehring. Under 3 minutes to play in the 2nd, and the Sioux still hold a two goal edge.
- That's it after two periods of hockey. The RPI Engineers trail North Dakota 4-2. Rensselaer had a few more chances in the waning moments of period two, but Goehring continued to see the puck well. SOG in the 2nd: RPI - 16, UND - 9.

3rd Period:
- Puck has dropped and we're underway in the third!
- North Dakota has come out strong to start the final frame...really skating well...19:00 left in the 3rd
- Now the Sioux will head to the powerplay again, and this is likely a five...and it is! Trini Iturralde gets called for the five minute major! 17:50 left in the 3rd. North Dakota going for the kill.
- Puppa coming up big right now with a couple of saves to keep RPI within 2 goals. 2:30 left in the major...
- And the Sioux take a penalty, as Leinweber gets called for tripping in the offensive zone...We'll skate 4x4 for about a minute, then RPI will head to the man advantage. 13:46 to play in the third.
- RPI with all the momentum right now, and on the man advantage. Goehring still standing on his head...12:45 to play in the third. 4-2 Sioux.
- Sioux kill the powerplay, but the tide has shifted once again, and the Engineers are dominating play. 11:45 to play in the third
- RPI will head back to the powerplay, as Travis Roche trips up Bob DiPronio in the Sioux end. 11:10 to play in the third. 4-2 North Dakota.
- Ken Hammond Scores!! Mark Jooris won a battle in the corner and got the puck out to Hammond who skated to the point and unleashed a slapper. Looked like the puck deflected off a Sioux skate in front, and past Goehring. Either way, the Engineers are back in this one. 4-3 Sioux with 10:47 to play.
- Lot of play in the neutral zone right now, as the Sioux are doing their best to hold on. Momentum still completely with RPI, as the Engineer faithful are cheering their squad on. 9:00 left in the 3rd.
- HOLY SMOKES!! WHAT A SAVE!! George Servinis absolutely deked Goehring out of his jock. Goehring went sliding to the right, as Servinis deked back to the left. A gaping net awaited Servinis, and he flipped the puck up, only to look horrifically on as Goehring reached his stick out in desperation and deflected the puck over the cross bar. RPI fans are stunned. 7:00 to go. Sioux just barely holding on to a 4-3 advantage.
- RPI dominating play, but Sioux doing a pretty good job at the moment of keeping the Engineers out of the grade A scoring areas. Goehring gobbling up rebounds, and the clock keeps on ticket. 5:00 to play in the third. 4-3 North Dakota.
- Terry Butryn Scores!! Adam Oates had the puck just inside the blue line along the far boards, and found Butryn through the slot at the near crease. A perfect pass to Butryn's stick seemed to be enough, but Goehring somehow managed to get over there. Butryn slammed the puck into Goehring, and someone it trickled through to tie this game up at 4 apiece. RPI fans going ballistic, Coach Blais has called his timeout. Sioux look defeated right now. 4:24 remains before overtime
- George Servinis Scores!! RPI quickly won the ensuing faceoff and dumped the puck in and began to cycle. Finally, the puck came to Servinis at the far circle. Servinis was able to skate down, and fired a laser that beat Goehring high to the glove side. Just 26 seconds after tying this one up, RPI has regained the lead. 5-4 Engineers with just 3:58 to play.
- North Dakota going all out right now to try and tie this one...not quite sure how they are getting the energy to do so. They look absolutely dead tired. 3:00 to play.
- Puppa with a nice kick save on Goren's attempt from the top of the near circle. RPI doing a good job of clearing out rebounds and keeping North Dakota to the outside. 1:30 left to play, and Goehring is on the bench for the extra attacker!
- That's the Game!! RPI managed to keep the Sioux from any grade A chances, and Puppa was up to task stopping everything that came his way. The Engineers will advance to the Round of 32!

Who will they play...well the BU-Duluth game just ended in Philly as well. The Bulldogs made a ferocious comeback, but could they duplicate RPI's heroics? Click the link below to see the game recap of that game...

Well...there are over 65 National Championship Teams. :)

And you shouldn't think of it as a #57 seed. Rather, they are the 57th best team in history of college hockey since 1947 (NCAA era). Pretty darn impressive if you ask me...and they are showing it thus far!

A similar RPI team had lots of problems with another North Dakota goalie in 1984.

Yeah, Jon Casey was a beast. It's too bad that the Sioux had to fall to Duluth in OT in the Frozen Four that year...could have been 4 titles in 8 years.

I suppose from your perspective, It's too bad that Jon Casey did what he did, otherwise it could have been back to back titles for RPI :)

I had forgotten that there was a possible rematch in the round of 32 between opponents from the second 1985 semifinal game.

We have a capacity crowd on hand as the Denver Pioneers look to take on the New Hampshire Wildcats here at the Pepsi Center. As you can imagine, crimson and gold outnumber blue and white, but plenty of fans from both sides. Introductions are about to start, and of course, everyone is very excited to see who will sing the National Anthem!

Ladies and Gentlemen, singing today's National Anthem...DEL SHANNON!!

Beautiful rendition! Nobody will be running away from this game though, as puck drop is up next!

1st Period:
- Puck has dropped, and we're underway in the Mile High City! 19:59 left in the 1st...
- Not much thus far here in the first...lots of play in the neutral zone. 18:45 left in the 1st...
- Powerplay coming up for Denver as Mick Mounsey hauls down a DU forward in the neutral zone. 17:50 left in the 1st. 0-0
- Jerry Walker Scores!! Marty Howe made a tremendous play to keep the puck in at the blue line. Howe then fed the puck down to the bottom of the circle to Bill Masterton. Masterton faked going back to the point, and instead found Jerry Walker with a beautiful cross ice feed to the far dot. Walker wasted little time in roofing the puck over UNH Goalie Matt Carney, and into the top shelf to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. 16:31 left in the 1st.
- Trent Beatty hits the post! Beatty beat Carney with his wrister, but the shot clang off the iron. All Denver right now. 14:00 left in the 1st.
- Jerry Walker Scores!! Masterton and Walker again team up, this time on a 2 on 1, as New Hampshire's Tim Horst got caught pinching in in the offensive zone. Masterton skated into the zone with the puck, and deked a shot before sliding the puck over to Walker, who one-timed the puck between Carney's legs to put the Pioneers up 2. 11:04 left in the 1st...all DU
- Denver is really putting the pressure on. They haven't generated a whole lot of shots, but they are dominating puck possession. Not looking good for New Hampshire at the moment. 9:00 left in the 1st.
- Grant Munro nearly scores for DU, but Carney makes a nice glove save. 7:30 left in the 1st. 2-0 DU.
- Bill Masterton Scores!! Beatty fed a nice outlet pass to Masterton in the neutral zone, and Masterton essentially just skated to the slot, let a slapshot fly that beat Carney, rang off the crossbar and back down into the net. Denver just thoroughly dominating this one. 3-0 Pioneers with 6:37 to play.
- Play back in the neutral zone, as the Wildcats are just trying to find themselves right now. 5:00 to play in the 1st.
- Jerry Walker Scores!! Fighting for the puck in the Wildcat zone, Walker won a battle in the corner, skated out to the bottom of the near circle, and roofed a wrist shot past Carney. That's a hat trick for Walker, as Carney is chased. Umile puts Ayers in the game. 4-0 Denver with 3:58 to play in the first.
- A lot of play in the neutral zone as the first period winds down. Very surprising so far. Denver looks like they might just be the best team to have played thus far. 1:15 left in the 1st.
- That's the end of the First. Denver controlling this one, up 4-0. SOG: DU - 11, New Hampshire - 7.

Sorry to those of you wanting to see the full recap. I had a little emergency in the family that required a trip to the ER. Everything looks like it will be okay, but a little scary for a moment there.

It doesn't look like I'm going to be able to get to the rest of the games that I was hoping to. At this point, it is highly unlikely that I'll finish this round by the Frozen Four. I'll keep trying to plug away as I have time, and I'll at least try to have at least a game or two done each week...probably on Thursdays (although not likely this Thursday).
