Re: Top 100 Greatest Teams of the NCAA era Tournament

A few things to update this thread a bit...

1) My schedule opened up a bit, so there will be hockey tomorrow!!

2) I've decided to let everyone here vote on what game they would like to see next. Pick from the list in the previous post. Either PM me, post here, or rep me. Make sure to have your picks in by 9:30am Eastern Time tomorrow. I'll announce what game was chosen at 10:00am Eastern, and we'll have puck drop at 12:05pm Eastern. Hopefully that adds some excitement to this thread. :)

3) I've finished putting in the data for the teams that were requested. Here are the results:

- 1965-1966 Michigan Tech - 156.4212 Points
- 1969-1970 Minnesota - 68.158 Points
- 1964-1965 Boston University - 120.8669 Points
- 1978-1979 Boston University - 81.2378 Points
- 1979-1980 Boston College - 99.3867 Points
- 1993-1994 Colorado College - 61.5408 Points
- 1953-1954 St. Lawrence - 113.4756 Points

4) If you would like me to do a ranking of a team from the NCAA Era that has not been ranked (i.e. a team not in that list, that missed the NCAA Tournament, and has a good, compelling reason to be ranked), let me know, and I'll do my best to run the data.

Anyway, that's the update for now. Make sure to pick the game you want to see tomorrow! :p:D:D

Re: Top 100 Greatest Teams of the NCAA era Tournament

SF23 --

Pretty sure you are too busy right now, obviously, and maybe not interested at all, but I would really like to see how the 04 & 05 Women Gophers would do vs the early UMD squads or the dominate UW teams that followed them, and then also, how both your UND team from this year would do, against some of those squads as well. I don't know how fair that team will be judged in time having had to go up against the team who, I think it would be fair to say, would be an easy and overwhelming #1 seed in any size tourney you did for the women. That is unless of course UND pulls off the upset which is a possibility as they have played the Gophers pretty close before. But not sure if you even care about the women's game or not? But I figured I'd at least ask. Figured if you did something, it could be far more limited, maybe a Top 12 of all time, or Top 16 or Top 25(where the 25th team could just be the last team out or something?)

Re: Top 100 Greatest Teams of the NCAA era Tournament

So, we have 1 vote so far? Wow.

I'll extend the time for people to vote for what game they'd like to see played today. New deadline is 11:00am Eastern, and puck drop will likely be at 1pm Eastern.

Again, here is the list of games...

Re: Top 100 Greatest Teams of the NCAA era Tournament

What the heck, I'll throw a vote at #47 vs. #82: perhaps UNH's best team ever (how DOES one really compare to '77 & '79?) versus the University of Vanek, er, Minny that beat UNH's 4th best team of the past 15 years.

Uhm, so how many points to break the top 100?

Re: Top 100 Greatest Teams of the NCAA era Tournament

About 30 minutes left to get your votes in. So far we have a 3-way tie between:

#44 - 2000-2001 North Dakota vs. #85 - 1952-1953 Minnesota
#47 - 1998-1999 New Hampshire vs. #82 - 2002-2003 Minnesota
#38 - 2002-2003 Colorado College vs. #91 - 2007-2008 Colorado College

Re: Top 100 Greatest Teams of the NCAA era Tournament

so the 1965-66 Huskies should have made it at? oh well, but good to know in the future.

Not only should they have made it, but they should have easily made it. They would have been #65. Obviously, at this point, I'm not going to restructure the whole tournament and replay games. However, as discussed earlier, I may have an NIT type tournament.

As a supporter of the #100 team, I heartily endorse this decision! :D

So what the hell did the 1965-66 team do that the 1964-65 team didn't to be higher than them even without getting to the NCAAs?

That's a good question. I'm going back through and double-checking all my data for those two teams to make sure the numbers are correct. I'm almost 100% positive that the 1964-1965 team numbers are correct, as I've triple or quadruple checked all that data. I quickly put the '65-66 data in...so perhaps I switched a couple numbers. Just on a quick glance, the differences are as such...

1) The '64-65 squad didn't win the Regular Season title. The '65-66 squad did.
2) Conversely, the '64-65 squad did win the WCHA Tournament (And NCAA Tournament). The '65-66 squad did not.
3) Their strength of schedules are actually pretty similar (this will be a main point that I check), but the '65-66 squad did play in a more difficult conference (evidenced by the 4th and 6th place teams making the NCAA Tournament that season).
4) The '65-66 squad had slightly better individual accomplishments, but that should be slightly adjusted for the quality of the NCAA as a whole in '64-65.

Other than that, the teams are very similar. The '64-65 squad had a slightly better winning percentage, and obviously won the NCAA Tournament, but the '65-66 squad was slightly stronger against NCAA Tournament competition (helped by the fact that the two NCAA teams from the WCHA were the 4th and 6th place teams).

Anyway, I'm going to re-check my data and get back to you.

Re: Top 100 Greatest Teams of the NCAA era Tournament

Pretty impressive, 11 guys with NHL games, 7 with over 150 games...totaling just over 4300 games combined.

The 1994-1995 Michigan Roster was loaded...didn't realize that prior to doing this formula/ranking. You had Brendan Morrison, John Madden, Mike Knuble, Marty Turco, Bill Mcukalt, and Blake Sloan...plus another handful of guys that all had at least a couple dozen games in the NHL. I wouldn't be surprised if this squad put up close to 4500-5000 NHL games combined...pretty darn impressive.

And they'll be the slight underdog in the game. :p:D:D

Wonder how the 1990-91 BU club missed the cut (where'd they rank), losing in 3OT to NMU in the title game, HE champions? They had 10 players with 4,538 NHL games led by Tkachuk, Amonte, MacEachern and Lachance.

They finished #123 at 127.978 Points. Certainly, they had an impressive squad that season. The four players you mentioned racked up for 4,100 NHL games. Not bad...not bad at all. :)

Just have an interesting question to ask: I see that the 1953-54 Minnesota team is in the tournament at #97. They were NCAA runner up to RPI that season and they were not in the Top 100. Where did RPI finish in the rankings?

The 1953-1954 RPI Squad finished #172 with 110.4163 Points.
