Tis the MSU-EL Offseason

Re: Tis the MSU-EL Offseason

OK I guessed wrong about the Hockey East team we will be playing this year. It will be at UMass Amherst on Oct 18-19.

Re: Tis the MSU-EL Offseason

Well, it looks like we're down to 2 unknown games. Most likely against an AHA team, which most of you are saying is AIC.

Or there's my very improbable theory that BC comes to Munn for a Friday game after visiting UM Thursday and then the final non-con is filled with a game against Ferris.

Re: Tis the MSU-EL Offseason

The exodus of 16yo recruits has to stop.
Boka? Yeah.

It seems like Anastos is having similar, Comley-like recruiting problems. He can get the big fish to sniff at the bait, but he has difficulty getting those fish to bite down on the hook. (Granted, the issue isn't as bad as it was during Comley's last three years here, but the problem is still there.)

Re: Tis the MSU-EL Offseason

Big fan of the non-con. Lots of new teams coming in.

Not too much of a fan of the Fri-Sun series for AIC and Princeton, but I understand that football gets first dibs. Especially since AIC weekend is the Michigan game, which could very likely have a 3:30 start.

Re: Tis the MSU-EL Offseason

Booked my flight last night. I think we're going to make East Lansing our base for the weekend and drive to AA for Friday's game. Hotel recommendations??

Re: Tis the MSU-EL Offseason

memo to Krug: You're doing great, but 36 hours later, I'm still grumbling about that soft clear up the middle.

Quick rule of thumb for when that's okay in the SC finals:

It's never okay.*

*unless you're 7'0" on skates, and even then, barely.

10 months in advance is the sign of a true fan!

As far as hotels it depends on how much you want to spend. The Kellogg Center is a short walk away, but expect to pay $170 or so a night. Other cheaper options are available within a 5-10 minute drive.

10? I'm coming in October. I want close to the rink, but close to restaurants, preferably a good breakfast place that's walking distance. I hate hotel breakfasts.

Big thing first of all is if you want to drive or walk to places. MSU has the largest campus in the country, though a lot of that is ag research on the southern part of campus. Still, from east to west it's 2 miles it can take about 40 minutes to walk across campus so just because something is "on campus" doesn't necessarily mean it's close.

If you want close, and especially to restaurants, there's the Marriott in downtown EL. You'll be able to get to the rink with about a 15 minute walk and all bars and restaurants are within about three to five minutes, so it's about as close as you can get. For breakfast, I don't know of too many places but I've heard Flap Jack is fantastic. They're just off campus in a shopping mall called Frandor.

Looking on Google there's a Howard Johnson on Trowbridge, which is the southwest end of campus. From there it would be about a 10 minute or so walk to the rink and it looks like they've got rooms for 83 a night. Unless you want Korean or Mediterranean there's not many other food choices around there.

And of course, if you end up booking away from campus, the Kellogg Center ramp is only 5 bucks for hockey and it's about a three minute walk to the rink from there.

Re: Tis the MSU-EL Offseason

Will definitely have a car. The Marriott was recommended so I might book there now just to book and wait to see what the team is doing. I'm thinking about a post game reception for our Friends of Hockey group as well for our fans traveling to the game. Not sure if it would be at a bar/restaurant or at the hotel. Or a bar/restaurant at a hotel. I'm flexible.

And I will be 4 days off celebrating my [milestone *cough*] birthday and another Terrier fan traveling is having a birthday on the day of the game so I'm expecting birthday wishes and a welcome on your scoreboard. :p :D

Sorry missed you were a BU fan...assumed you were heading in for the MSU UofM games :)

Someone else can chime in, but there are several breakfast places (I'm excluding fastfood) with good reputations, but few within reasonable walking distance of a hotel. Keep in mind Lansing traffic is not Boston. You can easily drive and park here.

Some breakfast places are..
Flap Jack with several locations
Golden Harvest in Lansing's Old Town..very popular..expect a wait and an experience. Old Town is Lansing's art community with interesting shops and restaurants.
Cracker Barrel in Okemos with low cost and large servings
IHOP on Grand River a couple miles east of campus

Some hotel choices

Marriott in downtown East Lansing ..lots of student oriented bars/restaurants nearby. About a mile from the arena.

There are several options near US127 and Lake Lansing Rd. Lots of mostly fastfood and dinner options close by. Courtyard by Marriot, Hampton Inn, and Holiday Inn Express are here. About a 5-10 minute drive to the arena and easy access to freeway.

Cheap option would be the Super 8 on Grand River near IHOP..not close to the freeway

Howard Johnson is on Trowbridge just off the freeway and campus...a few minutes from the arena

Several hotels are at the Okemos exit of I-96 (the road to AA) and close to Cracker Barrel. Fairfield, Holday Inn Express, and Comfort Inn to name a few. These are 10 minutes from the arena.

Stop making me hungry when I'm unlikely to go  :)
