Before the 17th the State legislatures picked Senators.

Is it time to repeal the 17th Amendment?

We have one body with direct election (The House) already. Is direct election of Senators doing anything more or better than that now?

Would we be better off if Senators were more beholden to their State legislatures than to "their electorate" (which loosely translates to special interests and Party money and requirements these days)?

What I saw the last two weeks was Senators more worried about Mitch and Chuck than their home states. That doesn't seem right.

And before you say it, I'm not sure it's a good idea. We could end up with Senators even more beholden to Party (as that'd be the plum job chosen by the in power party in each State).

Sorry but this is would do nothing to solve the problem of corporate money in politics. If state legislatures voted for U.S. Senators those senators would still be beholden to special interests, just those special interests that elected the state legislators. The only way to combat that is for people to get off their duffs and vote (well that and a viable way for elections to be publicly funded).

You must've missed where I said, " ... I'm not sure it's a good idea. We could end up with Senators even more beholden to Party ... " I was trying to start a legitimate conversation if this would help the state of US politics and why or why not.

You're a libertarian and you're wanting to discuss taking away an individual right and giving it to the government. An idea that gets solely floated by government officials in states controlled entirely by the GOP.
