Those %&# @*%$ Shoot Outs!

I like the idea of 10 minutes for OT. Isn't that the same amount of time some men's and women's conferences use for "mini games" in their playoffs? Btw, the mini game is an awful invention in my opinion. Back to the topic of OT, split the difference and put 7:30 on the clock for OT.

Most mini-games are/were 15 minutes. Some are 20. I’ve never seen 10.

And I loved the mini-game. Talk about intense.

I always wondered what happened to the 10-minutes overtime. Can you educate us, or at least me?

Paging Sean Pickett...

Trying to remember when and how many kids I had. I'm guessing early 90s as a local PBS station picked up the PASS feed and, based on donations, NESN for Beanpot, HEA & Hockeyfest.

Ok, sometime around then, everyone played 10 minute sudden death. Then the CCHA (because of PASS?) switched to 5 minute sudden death and the NCAA soon followed. I'm guessing it was around 1990/1.

Google was not my friend...

Re: Those %&# @*%$ Shoot Outs!

My recollection of the 10 Minute OT is that it was used in the 1970's; perhaps into the early 80's. I do believe that it was long gone by the 90's.

I've tried to research this question in the past, and found it tough sledding. I'm guessing that if you can locate a Library comprehensive enough to keep past editions of the rulebook, that might settle the question. Otherwise, we're probably stuck with these fuzzy memories.

Re: Those %&# @*%$ Shoot Outs!

as much as I'd like to see a 10 minute overtime, it's probably the least likely of any alternative
3 on 3 would be even worse than a SO, for one, no guarantee of it settling the tie, for another, it is even more rare for a 3 on 3 in a game than a penalty shot, I can't even remember the last time I saw a 3 on 3
if they change to anything, hopefully 4 on 4 after a 5 minute 5 on 5, and leave the tie if that's the way it ends, IMO

the mantra of the men D1 seem to be do it like the pros because that's where all the players are hoping to be
gone unsaid is that's where many of the coaches hope to be
